Thank you all for watching this video! Like many of you noticed and commented, he is a humble man who doesn't like the attention, but has been reading all of the comments and has been amazed by all your kind words! He didn't order the water cannons for himself as he didn't want the attention, or like he told me, "didn't want to delay passengers". American Airlines and the chief pilots ordered it for him and set it up without him knowing. I'm so glad they did. Thanks again for watching and helping close a chapter in my dad's life.
I think they wanted to do something nice he would remember. So I think the water cannons was a nice touch for the many year's he been with the airline.
I’m just starting my pilot career with American Airlines. 35 years from now I hope my kids are making the same video. God Bless and hope dad is enjoying his retirement.
I'm not even half way through the video and it's already got the tears flowing down my cheeks. My Dad was an airline Captain too, he used to fly Airbus A320's and Boeing 717's (that was before the a320) here in Australia. In October of 2016, exactly 3 years ago, he was forcibly retired at 56 years of age due to a serious stroke which ultimately meant his pilot's licence had to be cancelled as a result. He unfortunately didn't get the proper water salute/send-off from the firetrucks due to the sudden stroke. This video brought back so many memories as we used to go on trips with Dad occasionally and it was always so much fun for me as a kid. 4 months ago I got myself a job working as cabin crew on the exact same Boeing 717's that dad once flew back in the day and Dad cried, he was so proud and took us all out for dinner to celebrate. Dad was a captain for 17 years and a First Officer for 6 years before that. I'm sure he would still love to be flying today - he has a flight sim at home that he uses almost daily and although he hasn't said it, I'm sure he misses it. I'm sorry your career was cut short Dad, I hope you're proud of me and I'm glad I could keep aviation in the family.
Awwwww the poor guy :( Maybe you could arrange for him to go up in a small aircraft at a flying school (with another pilot of course) and have another go at the controls? Essentially another flying lesson. He won’t need a licence for that
I’ve been with American for 28 years as a Fleet Service Clerk, and every time I have a plane pull into my gate with a retiring Captain or First Officer it makes me feel good to be a part of their final trip!
They would love to make videos like this. But probably still not much realized about it yet. Videos like this are very personal and lovely. (For me) it's quite difficult to make something like this into some business things like ads. The taste will not be the same.
The water salute got the tears rolling for me! My career is only just beginning as a pilot, but I can only dream of having a career like him! ✈️ Happy retirement!
I always get choked up when I watch these wonderful endings of a rewarding career and the next chapter in these awesome pilots lives. Have a great retirement!

Jaspal Badwal Hey Jaspal. I’m sorry I didn’t see your post from a few weeks ago. Anyhow, congrats on beginning your journey to becoming an airline pilot!! The time from receiving all your certifications to actually getting your first professional gig is totally dependent on how much you fly and the type of experience you get prior to filling out that first application. The majors in the US require between 750-1500 minimum flight time to apply, dependent on your training. You must also take into consideration your competitiveness in comparison to other pilots also applying for the same job. A company like American hires people from all backgrounds and walks of life, and competitive time on a pilot to pilot basis is on average about 4000-5000 hours total flight time right now. Some hire with more, some hire with less. Hope that answers your question!
Was he based @ ORD? So happy that you enjoyed his last flight! My dad flew for UAL, DC 10, but missed his last flight due to the ORD DC 10 incident in 1979.
Awesome.! Pilots like your dad should be given way more thanks by society and be paid far more. Your dad safely got a million people or more where they needed to go during his career. Amazing job!
God bless that man. Seems like a genuine down to earth great human being. May retirement bring him everything and more he ever wanted. And may he live a long and healthy life. You deserve it
Rajib Sharma , thank you so much! That has been his goal since grade school. He has been flying since he was 14 (gliders), got his pilots licence before his drivers licence. There have been rough times, lean times, and good times....he never lost sight of where he wanted to be....
I too retired 2 months after your dad after 43 years as an ICU nurse. My coworkers secretly arranged for fellow coworkers I have worked with all over the hospital to line the corridor and clap as I left the ICU for the last time. I tried all day not to cry when people came to the unit to see me but the standing ovation was a total surprise and I then broke down and cried. It is a wonderful feeling and your dad deserved it!
Nate, what an AWESOME SON you are to recognize HONOR your FATHER this way......I thank GOD for watching, protecting, and keeping this Angel of a Pilot safe, as your Father, compassionately and carefully flew many people around the world......What TRUE HERO your FATHER IS! BE BLESSED and BE THANKFUL!
31 years flying for American airlines but this pilot mentions nearly 42 years married. A powerful testament that ol school can still rule! God bless you mum and dad!

As a frequent traveler and a flier almost exclusively with American Airlines, I might have at some point been on your Dad’s flight. Happy retirement, sir!
Wow this brought back memories. My Dad was a captain with American and retired 24 years ago. Very emotional for all of us. We lost him in June but my brother is carring it forward. He also is a Captain for American.
Amazing an humble man right there. Doing the same thing for 30 plus years is amazing. Not only did he do the sane thing he stayed married to 1 lady. Your mom is also amazing too. She stood by him an did not walk away when times got hard. Tell your dad an mom congrats. Now momma dont have to worry anymore about her hunny. She knows he will be home an safe on the ground. Your dad got so many ppl to an from where they was going threw the good times an the bad times. He made sure they was all safe an sound. I loved how he stayed so calm on his last flight. So many get all extra excited an let it get to their head an they make mistakes an your dad didnt. Tell them both congrats. He reminds me of my grandpa when he spoke about marriage. My grandparents was married for 62 yrs before he passed 4 yrs ago he told the nurse 1 day well its going good. They all laughed. He would always go well we been married 60 years so it has to be going well to be together that long an still alive. Lol
I love this! My 29 year old Son is a Pilot for Delta. I was flying back from Barcelona to JFK and my Son called me and asked where I was. I told him JFK going to SLC. He asked what flight, told him and he told me he was my Pilot! It was such a treat and was soo proud of him!👨✈️✈️❤️
Congratulations on your dad’s retirement. My dad also retired from American Airlines as a Captain on a Boeing 777. He retired from American after 32 years. I went on his last flight to London.
Thank you Nate. What a great video. My husband is 3 years from this day. He is a 767 Capt for Delta. We have flown many retirement flights they are always fun! Well done you should be so proud of your Dad!

Just wanted to take a moment to thank you for sharing this window into the ending of the career of a faithful and humble man. Our society needs more visibility of these kinds of men. In a society obsessed with the flashy and shallow, men of character and integrity are sorely needed. To your father: thank you for your faithful service, sir. I hope you have many years to enjoy the fruit of your labor and the company of your family and friends. May God continue to bless you and yours.
This video was so heart warming God kept him safe during his years at his job may He did the same during his retirement. All the best Love from South Africa

He is great captain, I can see he is very humble and polite. we rarely see such humble and great captains. 38 years in service and still loves his job. great passion. wish him great success, happy and healthy life ahead. His experience and passion is definitely lesson to present generation.
As a guy with 35 years with the same employer and looking to retire in the near future, I strive to have as much class as your dad on my final day at work. Great video.
Thanks a lot for your service Sr it’s was a pleasure for us as passengers to relax while you taking us to our destination safely I appreciate you I know many people like me appreciate you
l bow down to this truly honourable yet downright humble human being. 20 seconds into the video and I was raying he gets a water salute.... And there it was. To the son who made this video, God bless your heart. Do take care of this angel who has worked relentlessly. American Airlines..... 31 years!!! I hope you have given this man and his adorable wife, lifetime free passes. Most people don't stay with their spouse that long. Enjoy your retirement Sir and keep the blue side up!!!
It is people like your dad that I fly American Airlines!! I spend too much time in the air and the only thing that makes it enjoyable are folks like you dad. Thank you for all of those years of service and who knows, I may have been on a few of his flights!!!!
For his last flight... I think he buttered it. Love American as an Airline. I’m just starting my flying career and can’t wait to see what aviation brings my way. Best wishes to ya
Wow! Thanks Nate for sharing this video. I see in your Dad such faithfulness, dedication and commitment. I applaud this long career with AA, and also the kiss he gave to your Mum was beautiful. You guys are a lovely family!
The water salute was amazing I definitely cried!!Especially the part where your dad is telling others „you guys were outstanding“ shows what a wonderful person he is! Happy retirement you deserve it 😊

Let's be honest, every random video that is good has someone saying they never searched it
31 years at any job is really respectable imo
This guy has had the same job longer than I have lived. That’s madness
Yeah, you'll never find a Millenial with that kind of dedication.
1000th like :)
Most places in any industry nowadays don't want anyone to stay even half that long. Not in the United States.

Makes me think of my dad who has worked in the same airport as a baggage handler for 40 years and hopes to retire in 5 years at 65.
Bohnestiel M
awww.. my best wishes to him 😊 I can relate
Unsung hero, it's people like your father who just get on with the job with the goals of providing for their family
Bohnestiel M god bless him and his health
The difference is, when a baggage handler retires, they flush them off the airport grounds with the firetrucks. I kid though.
The same here. My Dad retired from TWA after working there for 36 years as a technician. He passed away few years back at the age of 83.

As a guy with 35 years with the same employer and looking to retire in the near future, I strive to have as much class as your dad on my final day at work. Great video.

l bow down to this truly honourable yet downright humble human being.

Wow! Thanks Nate for sharing this video. I see in your Dad such faithfulness, dedication and commitment. I applaud this long career with AA, and also the kiss he gave to your Mum was beautiful. You guys are a lovely family!
Very good video sir. God bless your father.
I feel like the fact that the captain didn't expect the water cannon salute made it all the more memorable for him.
The water salute was amazing I definitely cried!!Especially the part where your dad is telling others „you guys were outstanding“ shows what a wonderful person he is! Happy retirement you deserve it 😊
