Thank you for doing this! Making source code like this available makes life so much easier if you run into problems, or you're running some strange edge-case configuration that wasn't anticipated in the code. I haven't personally used a CAN-bridge in a Leaf, but I've spent a *lot* of time reverse engineering similar things, where source code availability would have saved days of work.

@@DalasEVRepair You're absolutely right! Over here on O'ahu, the Leaf and the i-MiEV were popular back in 2012. Sadly, I don't personally know any of the drivers of these cars. It would be interesting to find out what they think of their experiences on O'ahu. The longest trip one can take on this island (without turning around and driving back the way one came...) is about 180km. It is a route that goes around the eastern and central part of this island. (The route around the western and central part of O'ahu is blocked by a nature preserve and bird santuary). In 1978, the bicycling portion of the very first Ironman competition we had here was on this central and eastern route. I've ridden this route quite a number of times myself at a very slow, non-racing pace. I haven't owned or driven a car in 10 years, so that tells you something about this island. I wish you all the best in the fight against questionable engineering by the big tech companies. Aloha, my friend.

Looks like Nissan HQ and the local Total Nissan stealership (WA) are no longer interested in replacing batteries, so local entrepeneurs, like Daniel at the EV Shop in Balcatta will do it, but you have to order the batt from AUG Energy (Shenzhen) yourself and they deliver door-to-door. And Dala is really the greatest!

Wow, this is big news and very generous of you! I recall a number of unique features of your CAN-bridge firnware (for example, BatterySaver). I'm wondering - would it be worthwhile to install a CAN-bridge, without doing a pack upgrade, just to be able to take advantage of some of your CAN-bridge features? Joined Patreon and sponsored you, hope that helps out a bit. Your altruistic dedication to developing battery upgrade options for the LEAF is both commendable and rare - much appreciated! I don't know that I'll ever find a 40 kwh pack near Vancouver Canada, but I'm happy to support you regardless.

Hi Dala. Your really instructive videos have finally pushed me to go and buy a 2015 24kW Leaf. Although it has 11 bars and gives me 80 miles range, it would be nice to plan for the future. Can you buy the canbus kit, program it and fit to the existing car before buying a 30 Kw battery to upgrade? It seams logical to fit the kit and test it before going through demounting the old battery and installing a replacement and then finding problems.

Hi Dala! Thank you for open sourcing your projects! I'm very excited about your CCS conversion! I'm a software engineer myself, but I've not spent much time building ICs and controllers outside of Raspberry Pi & Arduino. I'm personally interested in replacing the Leaf pack with my own LFP cells and BMS. How much effort do you think it would take to accomplish building such a bridge? I would prefer to do this vs adding my own range extending pack in parallel and consuming internal volume and extra weight. Maybe we could work together and open source the project?

Dala: I am with you on developing things for the world because the world needs these things. Your community seems to be my kind of people. My own projects, to be published in the public domain before the end of the summer of '23, might appeal to your community. First is a MPPT controller for PV-->DHW, with minimum parts count, made on a single-sided circuit board. The companion project, which runs on the same 180-240 VDC PV array is a boost-mode DC-DC converter for charging EVs directly from the PV array. No conversion to AC is needed to charge an EV. Both are operated by a Arduino Uno. One or the other uses all the PV power, based on user-set priorities and whether one's EV is plugged in. Schematics, drawings for mechanical parts and source code will all be available for free before this summer ends. More people than just me need to be using cheap PV to power our world.

Hello! Huge hat tip to you for doing this!
I only just learned yesterday about all the DIY stuff people are doing with leafs, so I am really not clear what the parameters/limitations are of different solutions. So I am wondering, can this work with a custom battery pack made from brand new cells, and which doesn't necessarily conform to the 24/30/40/62kwh capacities? What if that bespoke solution uses LiFePO, which operates at different voltage to the car's native NMC chemistry (no, I'm not thinking of using both chemistries together)? Will the code you provide allow the vehicle to "adapt" to this difference, or is NMC pretty much baked in?

My best financial decision was buying a 2014 Nissan Leaf. It had battery issues a week out of warranty and after over a year of back and forth Nissan did the right thing and bought the car back from us under the Texas Lemon law for the price we paid. I wanted another fun car to drive so bought a manual Mazda MX-5 ND2 RF. This is the way. No reason to be chauffeuring a heavy battery around and all the inconvenience it entails.

    Hello… I agree. You are a true gentleman .
Quick question. Can I buy an early Leaf (2012 24Kwh) and modify it to do 2 way charging? I have a barn that I can put PV panels on and then was hoping to use the Leaf as an inexpensive mobile battery pack and drive it the 150m to the house….! Is this something that at least in principle is acheivable…. Regs Rupert

@@DalasEVRepair Are you serious?? And the car will be able to use the full capacity? I had so many people trying to tell me it needs coding or the car won't recognize it because of VIN coding and such.
My i3 motor bearings went bad, and it's been sitting in my garage since February, waiting for a motor replacement... and I finally found one from a 2018 with under 100 miles on it! I considered swapping to the 2018 EME (inverter) to get the "S" model capability, but that would have also required the KLE charger from the 2018, and I know that would entail some coding/programming... so I'll just replace the motor.
I got the battery for a steal... I don't think they knew what it was worth. The i3 Rex that the battery came out of was in a minor rear-end accident, 57k miles, but had no airbags deployed... so I'm sure hoping it's not locked. It had heated seats like mine does... supposedly that matters. (is there some external difference?)
If this works out, I'll probably endeavor to use the old 22kWh pack for home backup use.. though I might try to get a warranty claim on it first, before doing the battery swap....... hmmm......
I know I'll have to get the HVAC discharged, and then recharged when I swap the battery, but that should be worth it!

      @@DalasEVRepair Has this been verified?
Also, have you heard of any way to test the 94Ah pack to make sure it's not locked from an accident? As mentioned, the donor had been hit in the rear bumper, but no airbags were deployed (which is why I'm assuming the battery is still "alive"). The impact damaged some of the drivetrain electronics, which kept the car from driving though.

@@beforebefore yes many 94/120Ah upgrades have been done without problems. Unfortunately no check to do before fitting!

Thanks Dala! Now we just need someone to create 3rd party battery packs so they don't need to be sourced from Nissan or wrecks.

Dala, this may be a stupid question but what do you thibk it would take to use tesla cells in a nissan leaf? Ironically, it's easier to find used tesla cells in the states than finding leaf cells that arent severely degraded.
