Somebody earlier asked for the "scale" Moreno was playing... the chords I hear are: Ab min 7 / E min7 / D maj7 / Db7 (twice) Ab min 7 / F min7 / B maj7/ Db7 (twice) Awesome tune, I'm going to sit down and try to learn some of those licks!
Just watched Aaron Parks live for the first time last night after being inspired for years in my teen years by his "invisible cinema" album. He was playing for Ben Wendel(he needs to hurry up and come out with that "Seasons" album lol too dope), another great musician! It was a check off on my bucket list. Even though I sat in the back I felt the music entirely. I wish I could see him perform this vibe again! I heard he has a band called "Little Big" and he's coming back to this sound. I'm excited! I'm a huge fan. I want lessons lol I'm always searching through Apple Music to see what albums he's on. He inspires me to make music of my own. Definitely in my Top 3 favorites piano players. 10/10 for this album! I dub "Nemesis" as Storytelling Jazz. It really takes you somewhere hence the whole invisible cinema concept. Mr. Parks is always storytelling through his sounds. Please upload some more if you can. Take care.
What a great tune!! Mike Moreno sounds amazing though I absolutely love how Kurt Rosenwinkel rips on this tune at his concert. You can't beat that thick and powerful base melody lines. Matt Penman's a monster. Thanks for sharing this great video!!
Aaron Parks is brilliant. Just heard him at the Village Vanguard and I kept thinking how "Russian composer" he sounded. Like a lot of Shostakovich or Stravinky influence. He played some low end chords that just sounded miles away from the university of bebop. He played around some pedals on inner notes that was just stunning. The guy is just fantastic and is just a fresh voice in jazz. And what great use of space. He gives the other players so much. Wow.
Thanks Aaron for sharing this, love your music and playing. Havent got the record yet but I hang at your myspace and NPR and listen to it, when I find it (preferably via download, legal of course, since its instanta and better for the environment). Hope everything is great with you, and happy Obama day :) Best and warmest regards, Sandemose
haha, i didnt think jazzers wrote catchy tunes anymore :P really and incredible piece. i cant remeber where i've heard it before... i keep thinking the bad plus....?
Aaron posted all his leadsheats from Inviciable Cinema on his myspace site...its free to download :) Best regards, and thanks Aaron for sharing! Sandemose
His technique is so unconventional but it works for him. He plays flat fingered, only a few well known jazz pianist plays that way such as Art Tatum, Thelonius Monk. That was the first thing I noticed when I saw Aaron with Kurt Rosinwinkel. I love this song.
I like the fact that someone with the nickname TwelveToneMusic says something like that :) I dont think its a stupid question either, but SgtVadge: there is only one way to find out: transcribe, and analyse, draw conclusions. And thats your work ;) I can tell you will learn alot from that! Best regards, and luck Sandemose
sounds more like the ambient/progressive rock which is being seen alot around south england at the moment. still a beautiful peice of music and an artist worth investigating :_)
@RadiusX7 Are you serious? This song is painting a storm. Why would the guitar have a mellow tone? The guitar is portraying lightning, the bass and bass drum thunder, and the piano dark clouds and frantic wind. If anyone missed that they missed the whole song.
No dude, I meant the 6th string, E. ^^ I figured it already out, couple months ago, that it's need to play the melody. Nice observation about that triad, though. ^^
Part A: Pedal en B (C flat) by Aaron. Play triads and D6 Db7 no twice. Part B: Pedal en Ab (G sharp). Play triads and B6 Db7. Pedal changes in second chord of parts
Cus Mike plays on the record. Think Eric Harland (badass monster must be heard!) plays drums on the record as well. Since Aaron is in Kurts band (and not the opposite way?) they seem to play it alot. Think Ive heard/read its written for Kurt. Best regards, love this music, Sandemose
@chris9vikus Nice observation! Well i would say, it's just the first 4 chords of the songs. I totally know what you mean, but there might be a slight possibility that aaron parks came up with the exact same 4-chord-progression. I once wrote a song and a friend told me the first three chords (even the voicings) were exactly the same with the ones of a pat metheny song. At that time i didn't even know who pat metheny was.
Yes, I've realised that my initial inference was incorrect since listening to the whole album; the "Mehldau influence" was actually just the Radiohead-esque harmony and composing.
Rich, you missed the setting - it's a storm brewing and outside an abandoned gas station, the storm is coming and he's jiggling the handle on the bathroom but it's stuck and won't open and that storm is coming closer . . . of course I could be wrong about that floor tom.
definitely possible. Aaron parks is really big at my school and I think it's because we have bad plus come out all of the time, and a couple years ago i think they must have told one of my buds about him
@DaneThemeSwimming There is a difference. In 3/4 the bar is divided into three and in 6/8 it is divided into two. It can be a subtle difference in some songs but it's important to know how it changes the accenting!
i also hadn't considered, it may just be the distortion on the amp itself...the fender blues junior has EL-84 tubes on board, that could make that nice AC-30 tone.
hi there are lead sheets for the whole album aviable at nextbop.com, just google "nextbop aaron parks lead sheet" its the first result, it doesnt work when i link it somehow
@EllxB yeah it is strange but look on it from the other side. it give you some other context. if you think that way it going to be more interesting. even inspiring. In spite of all I like this so much ;] greeting. p.s. great guitar here!
The only distinction I can think of: having never heard a piece before, I'm going to assume the 7/4 is a slower tempo than 7/8. Since these guys are subdividing once and then again, it sounds like 7/4 to my ears. Of course, if we were in Mumbai, this would be in 14... As you say, it's how it sounds that matters most. The time signature is nothing more than an indicator.
I agree but even in anthropology he is mild with the bop lines, it's his style maybe, very melodic and colorfull and certainly the reason why I like him.
No, I think I just spot this small amp (15W Fender?), just about breaking up? I looove that guitar sound too! And I'm normally into distorted Marshall sounds, modding amps.
No, but I would guess that it is a modified RAT distorition pedal. Everyone else use it (Kurt Rosenwinkel, John Scofield, Ben Monder, BIll Frisell etc).
@FSanchezmusic I don't think it's tuned in Eb, the song is in Ab minor, if you see the first notes that the guitarist plays (Bb B Ab) they're played in first position 5th string, if it would be tuned in Eb it would be out of tune. Later during the solo you notice that he is soloing on chords progression Abm, Em, Dmaj13, Db sus (add3)... Anyhow I agree with NikoisBack!!!
'Invisible Cinema' = one of the greatest Jazz albums of the 2000s. Update from 2022: One of the greatest Jazz albums of the 21st century.
Agreed 600%
What a guitar solo! God damn!
Somebody earlier asked for the "scale" Moreno was playing... the chords I hear are:
Ab min 7 / E min7 / D maj7 / Db7 (twice)
Ab min 7 / F min7 / B maj7/ Db7 (twice)
Awesome tune, I'm going to sit down and try to learn some of those licks!
Jazz hypnotique sublime !
what a tune. thats how i like music. radiohead+jazz = heaven
It's so strange and I got goosebumps everytime I realize that what connects me very deeply to a wide variety of music is the sound of Radiohead...
Wow ! Mike Moreno's soli is beautiful. Nice phrasing, phrases with true meaning and great ideas. I need to listen to this guy's stuff.
If you like Mike's music and Aaron's music, you should go check out Kurt Rozenwinkle and also Allan Holdsworth.
I know them. I love Rosenwinkel, but don't like Holdsworth.
Ginger Jam Do you think Allan Holdsworth plays does to much shredding or has to much tension in his playing or both?
I don't like his tunes and the sound of his bands.
listen to michel cusson , the former "uzeb" guitar player
Top guitar player !!!! MIKE MORENO...
I' just fall in love with this song!

You must check out pieces by Jaki Byard, such as "Family."
What a great tune!! Mike Moreno sounds amazing though I absolutely love how Kurt Rosenwinkel rips on this tune at his concert. You can't beat that thick and powerful base melody lines. Matt Penman's a monster.
Thanks for sharing this great video!!
love this song...
And it sounds so, so good.
-Gilles
this song will be played at the end of the existence
Mike 🔥🔥 Aaron !!
Great composition and playing! Is that Mike Moreno on guitar? sounds awesome!
Yea, it is. He is fukcing great.

Such an industrial ballada !
This is Great.

Great job Aaron. Thank you so much for posting this.
yeah! Nice work. AP is a great player, as they all are, and they are leavin' everything on that stage.
that ride at the end is killer
I love that guitar.
I honestly think the song was extremely bad
Darkness Schneider I honestly think your comment has the samevalue than my worst farts on a bad day.
.
You mean the performance or the actual tune?
I thought it was 7/4 but still I went to check (Aaron has the scores on his site!) and it really is 7/4.
Great tune, great musicians!
Man this is soooo good thanks for sharing….sounds like Porcupine Tree
Something else . Great .
great guys, wish to watch their live performance
Man... You are so good.. mixing jazz with minimalism...
Thanks Aaron for sharing this, love your music and playing. yes sir!
sounds more like the ambient/progressive rock which is being seen alot around south england at the moment. still a beautiful peice of music and an artist worth investigating :_)
Matt Penman and Jochen Rueckert - one of the best bass/drums teams in New York!
@RadiusX7 Are you serious? This song is painting a storm. Why would the guitar have a mellow tone? The guitar is portraying lightning, the bass and bass drum thunder, and the piano dark clouds and frantic wind. If anyone missed that they missed the whole song.
Gentle, yet serious...
No dude, I meant the 6th string, E. ^^
I figured it already out, couple months ago, that it's need to play the melody. Nice observation about that triad, though. ^^
Love this song. But honestly... the pitch of the bass drum was killing me the entire time. Seems like it clashed.
good point
now you mention it i can't not hear it
Bass is low
Indeed. It's a shame the bass drum is droning out Matt Penman's great bass lines...
@chillerbro9000 the lead sheets for the whole album are on nextbop.com
Agree!
That's really not a bad question, I don't know why this received so many "thumbs-down"
Super emotiva rola...
Part A: Pedal en B (C flat) by Aaron. Play triads and D6 Db7 no twice. Part B: Pedal en Ab (G sharp). Play triads and B6 Db7. Pedal changes in second chord of parts
Bad ass mike moreno!!
oh yeah
Cus Mike plays on the record. Think Eric Harland (badass monster must be heard!) plays drums on the record as well. Since Aaron is in Kurts band (and not the opposite way?) they seem to play it alot. Think Ive heard/read its written for Kurt. Best regards, love this music,

yeaaah
I hear a very strong Mehldau influence on Parks' composing and playing here.
i think its more due both being influenced by alt rock bands compositions.
Good point, and also the influence of Keith Jarrett and classical music.
Yes, I've realised that my initial inference was incorrect since listening to the whole album; the "Mehldau influence" was actually just the Radiohead-esque harmony and composing.
i think Mike Moreno just became my favourite guitar player
Rich, you missed the setting - it's a storm brewing and outside an abandoned gas station, the storm is coming and he's jiggling the handle on the bathroom but it's stuck and won't open and that storm is coming closer . . . of course I could be wrong about that floor tom.

greeting.
p.s. great guitar here!
anybody knows what distortion pedal does mike moreno use?
Matt penman on Bass (go KIWI's) and looks like rocking Jochen Reukert on drums.
Nice gat work. Great tune.
@danyjr Chech out Brad Mehldau's radiohead covers
Is Mike´s e string in eb tuned?!
@paulpenelly explain why?
He is a great guitarist, essential, not too bebop, but has nice phrasing and technique.
Does anyone know what type of distortion Mike Moreno uses?
Anyone know how the guitar is tuned to accommodate that low Eb?
@fishqwer Eb tuned in Eb theres another video of this song on youtube and at the end mike tune his 6th string again :0
MIKE MORENO IS AWESOME!

Monster playing
Anyone know how to get a gyitar sound like that? Like specofic distortion / amp settings?
Definitely try putting the guitar on treble pickup, the amp settings should be with a noticeable amount of gain, high treble and balanced mid and bass
Simply wonderful!
Shame for the lame quality of the recording:-((
+picardbs
What's wrong with the sound quality?
+Ester Samuels Buy decent audio gear and listen to Aaron Parks on HQ, you will know what you are missing.
@@Mortison77577 everything
@fishqwer Probably just tuned to Eb, don't you think?
Hi, can I have the transcription please?? thanks a lot.. :)
@sosaturdido As you wish man, let me recomend you a blog. it´s called nextbop, look for the aaron park page and you can find their lead sheet.
I agree but even in anthropology he is mild with the bop lines, it's his style maybe, very melodic and colorfull and certainly the reason why I like him.
@trapfman lol. I love trolls, because they always make me look smarter. Thanks for the comment because you make me look like a genius, "yo"!
a distinction between 7/4 and 7/8 is never wrong, thats the basis of counting, thats like saying theres a difference between 3/4 an 6/8
I'm diggin' this - MM is a lot more conservative on the studio version...
Some Chopin influence...
is that mike moreno on the electric guitar?
Wat kind of effect kids mike using for his guitar?
Sounds like Overdrive and Reverb, or maybe Delay for the solo, but also some kind of tremolo, after he comes out of the solo.
any idea which pedals Moreno is using to get this amazing distorted guitar sound?
No, I think I just spot this small amp (15W Fender?), just about breaking up? I looove that guitar sound too! And I'm normally into distorted Marshall sounds, modding amps.
Composed by Aaron Parks :)
Thank you, oh wise one! I will try to expand my ears, maybe someday they'll be as big as Dumbo's...lol
Can somebody tell that the tune is in 7/8 ? :)
Or perhaps 7/4. :D
Interesting how the guitarist holds the pick with his middle finger instead of his index.
wow how crazy!
what is name this guitarist?
he has genius and maybe possibility of becoming pat metheny.
bravo brava
No, but I would guess that it is a modified RAT distorition pedal. Everyone else use it (Kurt Rosenwinkel, John Scofield, Ben Monder, BIll Frisell etc).
mike moreno
Great stuff. Who is playing ? Is this Matt on bass ?
@FSanchezmusic I don't think it's tuned in Eb, the song is in Ab minor, if you see the first notes that the guitarist plays (Bb B Ab) they're played in first position 5th string, if it would be tuned in Eb it would be out of tune.
Later during the solo you notice that he is soloing on chords progression Abm, Em, Dmaj13, Db sus (add3)...
Anyhow I agree with NikoisBack!!!
@iplaytehbasspipes It might make a difference when you're learning it ;)
no. see 4:38 BEG triad over E minor, fretting G on the first string, third fret.
the guitar solo is amazing, the piano lacks of volume during the solo.
who the shit is that guitar player? unbelievable tone
Who knew Seth green was such a great pianist
@trapfman lol!
