    I feel like this is one of the realest videos I've seen about medical school. I'm going to be starting med school this year and I realize it will not be easy. Thank you for being honest!

    Finally, someone with a personality!
    I've been clicking through all of these "Getting Into Medical School" videos and they're all with people who are very robotic, with monotone voices reciting scripted lectures on how medical school isn't for everyone, and "are you even sure you want this", and the I triple majored in all of the hard sciences and double minored in genius and that's how I made it. And I find it all rather creepy. Nice to know normal people can become doctors too.

    Seriously, you hit home when you talked about having TH-cam as your creative outlet. I haven't applied to Med. school, I'm still deciding between Med. school and a PA program. But from what I understand, they are equally as competitive and rigorous programs ((-)step, and residency for PA school). I've been doing TH-cam for a little while now, and it's my ultimate creative outlet. I can incorporate my love for music, fashion, makeup, drawing, making something from nothing, giving people help, and all the likes. But because the journey into medicine is a long and hard one, and they can't really see where my TH-cam is going (still so few subscribers) my family and my friends don't seem to take me seriously and support my TH-cam. They keep insisting that I need to focus on medicine and leave this side hobby alone. For me it's much more than a side hobby, it's my passion. One that can led me to another level, if that's what the man upstairs has planned. If not, then it's something that I still find great joy and accomplishment in. Either way, I can't see myself giving it up. I see it like this, medicine and TH-cam are my right and left shoe. I would rather walk at a snails pace with both shoes on, than even budge with only one. How far will one shoe take me before I'm badly injured, and bleeding, and sitting on the side on the road?

      Med school is >>>>>>> PA in terms of admission selectivity. They don't even compare.

    • @BeautiFuFu
      @BeautiFuFu 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Daniel V. Med school: high GPA, pretty competitive mcat, recommendation letters, involment in community and medical field not necessarily required but makes you look good... "well rounded"
      PA School: "standard gpa" but "accepted students' have GPA of around 3.8, GRE (I know can't be compared to mcat) in the range of not required to "accepted students" scores in 20th percentile,also mcat scores are accepted as well, recommendation letters, patient experience ( many of which you need to get a separate certificate for IE CNA, Medical assistant, etc) can range from none to 2,000 hrs. with accepted students having 2,000 to 6,000 direct patient care hours, PA shadowing range from none to up to 200hrs (but by now I'm sure you get the picture of what an "accepted student" looks like), required courses are basically everything in a bio/ chemistry undergrad degree course + some extras like medical terminology, some even Spanish is required
      if you know anything more, please share, I'm actually really interested because I'm trying to make up my mind

    • @keltong8507
      @keltong8507 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Just understand that you can be admitted to a PA school with a GPA as low as 3.0. There are a lot of for-profit PA schools that are fairly easy to get into. The ones that are difficult are the cheap ones for obvious reasons. In addition you must figure out if you want to be a medical leader or be under the authority of someone else. Medical school education does not even compare to PA school. You'll learn what you learn in PA school in two years in one semester. If you want to go to medical school you have to understand that you will literally be studying or in class all day from morning to late evening. Not many people can handle this which is why medical school is much more selective. To give you an understanding of the breadth of education as compared to PA. A PA will know that this one drug is used to treat this disease and maybe basic dosage understanding. The doctor will have much more deep understanding of the mechanism of action, drug interactions, nonconventional dosage, etc. If there is a patient that is not completely by the textbook and simple as if patient has A you must do B, then there is where your education limits you. You must go to the MD for further guidance.

    Medical school is not difficult, per se; it IS tedious. You're really only competing with yourself and you're doing all this for the benefit of the patients you will treat in the future.
    Relax, enjoy. It's really a spectacular experience. Throw yourself into it. Don't be afraid. There are a lot of physicians/surgeons out there and we've all done it.

    Just saw this site. As a physician of 26 years, things “get better” AFTER med school. Residency was great, but the challenges, frustrations & exhaustion of medicine post residency is a new kind of frustration. Decreasing reimbursements, legal issues, non compliant patients, etc. really challenge every physician. But there’s nothing like being a physician. I’ve seen the beginning of life, the end of life & everything in-between. Kudos to you young man.

    I think I have a general idea of what you're talking about. I went through a rough year last year and I'm trying to bounce back. I'm getting ready for my MCAT and I have to miss my family vacation this upcoming winter to study for it. I guess another example is that my friends would ask me for help but when I have down time I need to rest so I could get up and function properly to study again so I turn my phone off and ignore messages until I have time to reply. It sucks but I need to do what's best for me right now, I'm not their baby sitter.

    As a first year maths undergrad, I can agree to this so much. Defo most of the lessons I've learnt come under this. I think it not only applies to med students, but to those who are really pushing themselves out of their boundaries (even if those boundaries are not as high as others, Ie those in med school).

    • @Anand-cd6yy
      @Anand-cd6yy 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @letyv9071
      @letyv9071 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      basically...

    • @danjamesDR2
      @danjamesDR2  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I'll second Michelle's answer... because yes it all is competitive, however relatively different specialties have higher requirements for their residency programs. For example-- orthopedic surgery programs typically require a 240 on the step 1 exam while family medicine average was 210. That is not to say that there aren't very competitive family medicine residency programs etc... just historically surgery and dermatology require the most competitive scores

      +Dan James do you know the requirements for cardio?

    • @danjamesDR2
      @danjamesDR2  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      so cardio is kind of a two step process. First you do an Internal Medicine Residency (3 years) and then apply to cardiology as a fellowship. If you work hard and get decent step scores a straight cardiology fellowship isn't too hard to get (not easy but not impossible). However, interventional cardiology (cardaic caths and stenting etc) is very very very competitive

      Haha that is a complicated question. I did manage to have two long relationships (~9mo each) but I'm not going to lie... it was tough and I ultimately have come to the decision to actively remain single for the rest of my time as a med student. **HOWEVER I have many friends who have had different experiences! I think the main thing that dictates the success rate is the other person honestly, if they are easy going and are willing to give you space when you need to study or are in it with you and get it I think you have a better shot. Hope that helps haha

      Medical schools are not concerned with your high school grades. but for an undergrad, GPA between 3.5 to 4.0 is pretty good! (the more, the better)
      3.5= 90%
      3.6= 91%
      3.7= 92%
      3.8= 93%
      3.9= 94%
      4.0= 95% to 100%
      All the best :)
