One of my favorite aspects of Tolkien's legendarium! Whenever eagles are coming, victory and "good " arrives with them. Cant describe how much I love them and one of my favorite scenes in all of Peter films is Flight to the Carrock, its just so powerfull and angelic only because of eagles and magnificent music!

In the Hobbit chapter queer lodgings it says "the Lord of the Eagles became in after days the King of All Birds and wore a golden crown, and his fifteen chieftains golden collars (made of the gold that the dwarves gave them)”. My reading of that is that the crown and collars are a)new after the battle of Five Armies and b) made of actual gold.

It's quite interesting to see that a lot of illustrators depict these eagles as American Bald Eagles. Seeing as Tolkien based his stories on European folklore an European kind of eagle would be more fitting. Like the Golden Eagle or White tailed Eagle.
But then again. The eagles came from Valinor. Which is in the West.

  • @raphael887

Tolkien had early designs that the Eagles were Maiar, but he seemednto disregard and suggest they were creatures of middle earth. I feel the fact we don't know what the Eagles get upto much during the Second Age, or after the third age suggests in my mind Tolkien was still wrestling with the idea the Eagles wer Maiar, and returned to Valinor some time early on in the fourth age.

I actually dreamt this. I have been reading LOTR since 9 years of age and it is a story I read at least once a year sometimes more. So back to the dream. In the dream sometime after the battle at the gates of Mordor the Eagles fly high, higher then they have ever flown before and they find a portal where earth’s atmosphere ends and the winds of space begin, the Eagles fly threw the portal and discover a planet of trees and mountains bigger then they have ever seen. I do see people much like the beings of Middle Earth threw gaps in the tree cover they are pointing up to the Eagles. So that’s what I’ve always believed what happened to the Eagles.

Great topic. My impression always has been that, in The Hobbit, Tolkien described eagles in general terms as a rough concept. Then, as he conceived more details on all the history of Middle Earth, these ideas generated more specifics on the Eagles. But I agree that it is odd that, when writing Gandalf's conversation with Gwaihir in LOTR, he didn't seem to think of Gandalf's eagle encounter in The Hobbit

    • @TheBrokenSword

  • @timball1294

I think that the Lord of the Eagles in the Hobbit may have been Landroval, not Gwaihir. It would fit with Gandalf only being carried by Gwaihir twice. It would also fit with the line in the chapter The Field of Cormallen in ROTK, "There came Gwaihir the Windlord, and Landroval his brother, greatest of all the Eagles of the North, mightiest of the descendants of old Thorondor"
The description could apply to both Gwaihir and Landroval but it could equally be applied to just Landroval. The fact that Gwaihir is described as the Windlord before the introduction of Landroval, leads me to believe that the second reading is more likely.

The Hobbit Mentions that Gwaihir eventually became the Greatest of Eagles of Middle-Earth. At the time of the Hobbit he was merely one of the chieftains but sometime after the Hobbit and before the LotR he became the Great Eagle. So they are one and the same. Also it makes sense that the Crown and Bands wouldn't get mentioned as they wouldn't be very good to wear during combat.

I tend to think it was a shellob type deal. the eagles hung around and became smaller over time, mating and diversifying until they were regular eagles. Like the Haast eagle in new Zealand. Mortality seems to be a reward in Tolkien's world and becoming more basic over time is standard, like ents becoming just trees.

There will always be wars in the Tolkienverse and Manwe needs eyes and troops. Middle Earth seems to be where they would stay to continue to fulfill their functions.

Many people think: but then the eagles could be used to go to Gondor or enter Mordor without Sauron even imagining that someone proposed the destruction of the ring.
But Sauron could control the weather and use winds and storms of lightning and hail against the Eagles like he did at Emyn Muil:
"The skirts of the storm were lifting, ragged and wet, and the main battle had passed to spread its great wings over the Emyn Muil, upon which the dark thought of Sauron brooded for a while. Thence it turned, smiting the Vale of Anduin with hail and lightning, and casting its shadow upon Minas Tirith with threat of war. Then, lowering in the mountains, and gathering its great spires, it rolled on slowly over Gondor and the skirts of Rohan, until far away the Riders on the plain saw its black towers moving behind the sun, as they rode into the West."
And entering Mordor would be a nightmare for the eagles. Mordor is surrounded by smoke from Mount Doom. And it is not just a smoke of the volcano's geological action, but a power of shadows and (in my opinion) of disorientation for Sauron's own defense. Even he tried to get through his own defense with the Eye, but he was having difficulties:
"He could never come back. Without any clear purpose he drew out the Ring and put it on again. Immediately he felt the great burden of its weight, and felt
afresh, but now more strong and urgent than ever, the malice of the Eye of Mordor, searching, trying to pierce the shadows that it had made for its own defence, but which now hindered it in its unquiet and doubt"
