In popular media, German is also portrayed as being very harsh and loud (Hitler-esque) when in fact that is just an exaggeration used in order to elicit comedic effect. When Nazi skits and Hitler parodies are the only popular sources of spoken German in other countries, of course the feeling of German being harsh and serious will prevail. As a German, i think that while English is a very beautiful language, German has a bit more depth and you can express yourself more sophisticatedly. It sounds very illustrious and not as casual as other languages which makes it special. Some of the most important writers and poets are German (Göthe,Schiller etc.) and 1/10th of today's publications of books are written in German which is quite absurd when considering that there are only about 100 million native German speakers in the world. Many of these publications are science publications which shows you the importance of German science efforts and the significance of the language. In conclusion, one should not underestimate the German language and its importance while also recognizing the fact that the way German is represented in popular media does not reflect the true sound and feeling to the language. Sorry, don't want to sound like a square but this is important to me since the general consensus about the German language in other countries seems to be that it is an ugly and harsh language which somehow is inferior to the Latin based languages.
