    Frank Nelson must have been so easy to write for. He could make a mundane word into a huge laugh just by the way he said the line. He could say one word, YYYessssssss! and totally break up the audience. My favorite line is in the episode on the train: “Oh, goody, I just won five dollars from the engineer!”

    Frank Nelson doesn’t voice the character in the Simpsons. He is voiced by Dan Castellaneta (Voice of Homer). The character (Yes Guy) is a parody and tribute to Frank Nelson.

    The "Quiz Show" episode is a take off on a real quiz/stunt show, "Truth or Consequences." It later transferred to TV, where the host for many years was Bob Barker - who went on to do "The Price is Right" in later years.

    I just caught this video, Rick, and it's a winner! Frank Nelson is one of most underrated comedians of his era. Lucy and Desi made good use of his talents.
    I was thinking that when the "I Love Lucy" show ended, including the hour episodes, the producers wanted Bill Frawley and Vivian Vance to return in a series of their own, called "The Mertzes." Frawley was for it, but Vance didn't want to work with Frawley again. The producers should have tried a series with Frank Nelson as Freddie Fellmore and have him and his wife buy the old apartment complex from the Mertzes. Cast a screwball actress as Nelson's wife, and make him just as loony, and show their misadventures running the apartment house with ever revolving kooky tenants. Anyway, that's what I would have pushed for if I've been involved with the show.

    I loved that guy. I'm 56 and I think my very first memory of him was from a LooneyToons short of a store clerk modeled on him and possibly Bugs played the antagonist and then I of course remember him in I.L.L. but it wasn't until I was probably in my 40s when I really discovered the Jack Benny show (and bought the dvds) and his interactions with Frank were, just as you said, "comedy gold." Nice video, thank you Rick.

    Frank Nelson is a comedic icon; such a body of work spanning across different types of entertainment genre, I'm so glad you've highlighted him. With such a strong personality that has left what I consider an almost subliminal pervasive influence even in today's popular media it's amazing he didn't achieve a more readily identifiable level of fame? Nevertheless, really enjoyed the post and please don't stop. It's important these stories aren't lost to time, we've already lost so much. Keep preserving these valuable archives through the wonderful pieces you post.

    • @ricknineg
      @ricknineg  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +James Stratton That was my goal: to post these things so others can remember and learn snd hopefully not lose them

    • @vascoemyer
      @vascoemyer 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm so happy you've followed through. I'm voraciously interested when it comes to entertainment media - both traditional and modern.
      I grew up in the 1950s when telelvision was still in its genesis so it's been interesting watching it's evolution from free to air to paid-for transmissions. If you want to take a snapshot of popular cultures, check out their media etiologies.
      At the risk of repeating myself - old folk do tend to, I totally commend you for your important documentation and presentation of what was no matter what type of person Lucy may have become after her split from Desi, an important contribution by a gifted comedic genius who helped fashion an unique moment in mid-20th century television content, "I Love Lucy"
      Have you ever thought of bringing to life as you've done with Lucy, other significant persons who left us wonderful legacies with their individual/collective bodies of work - for example, at the moment, I'm reading Shelley Winters' autobiography and her stories, her generosity of spirit and often underrated intelligence are timeless yet so education of a bygone era when movies ruled and the studio systems was at it's zenith before quickly sliding into an eventual demise. Miss Winters' bio remains in parts, surprisingly germane to our current 21st-century experience.
      Just a thought but I think given your obvious talent for sourcing material that may given an alternative treatment from yours, would read as quite dry, you might be ensuring these other unique and fab personalities from our shared cultural history aren't lost somewhere in time.. ; )

    Hahaha that actually happened to me once, where a customer asked an incredibly stupid question. I was standing BEHIND the counter, with my co-worker, Grace, BOTH Grace and I are wearing our WORK UNIFORMS,,,, and the SIGN right above us stating the department we were posted at. This man comes up and asks, “Do you work here?” I looked at him and said, “No, I just thought it be fun to put on a uniform and come stand behind this counter, just for kicks.” The guy says, “oh.” And walks off. I was shaking my head in disbelief as Grace says, “I can’t believe you just did that! Lol” and I said, “The public’s stupidity never ceases to amaze me.....” lolz 😆 and at that moment I was thinking of Frank!!

    That beautiful blonde that comes walking in at the night club is a young Barbara Eden. Most of us remember her from I Dream of Jeannie.

    Rick, I never saw the "Simpsons" episode he was in. If he died in '86, how was he in the Simpsons? That show started after he died. ??

    He also appeared in season three episode "The Million Dollar Idea" but plays his role of Dickie Davis totally straight; no yessss? or any other comic gestures.
