    Quick note on the build. I've had some people suggest adding a metal tube to the system, because the cardboard can loose its rigidity over time. I'm adding these into my system, and you can find the tubes here: Metal Support Tube for Seamless amzn.to/3rjVf5V

      Also the white guides should be horizontal and the weights are hung from the chain through the smaller bits 👌👌

    Hey man this is great. For you to not be a photography you have a lot of knowledge on the craft. I will be trying this once we move into our home! Thanks again! Much success to you sir!

    Michael - for not being a professional photographer, you used the correct terminology, great job. This is a good solution and as a note for your viewers, the other solution is a fabric backdrop. The issues with that were addressed in Michael's video - a fabric would collect dust and keep the dust, they are much heavier and more awkward to use. Seamless is cheap, easy to install and replace and if it does get dirty....it cuts quite easily. Just don't over-tighten the "chains" as they can break.

    Great video. I am terrible at photographing my sculptures and every photography channel I try and watch has super intricate/ expensive/ complicated set ups. Glad to finally see a setup I think I can actually accomplish!

    To all those questioning the plastic chain. I had this kit installed in my living room (conveniently hidden behind a boxed in ceiling beam) as I did product photography on the side on a regular basis. I used it several times a week for 10 years and never had an issue with the chain (nor did I ever add a metal support tube to any of the rolls). Worked great and paid for itself many times over.

    Awesome. I bought my first Bogen Background Roller System about 30 years ago and used two of them in my photography studio. A very efficient setup.

    Man, with all the solid colors from your papers, I noticed that my screen was very dirty. It looked like you had all kind of smudges and discolorations on your papers, but in fact it was my screen. Thanks 👍😊

    For a *real* seamless background you have the rolls backwards - the paper needs to curl onto the floor - in other words: you use the inside of the paper roll. So, how it is done: lower the paper, let it settle on the floor for the depth you need, tape down edges. Let relax for a bit, adjust the tension to achieve a gentle transition between horizontal and vertical, lock in place.
    (I worked my way through art school as an assistant commercial photographer… that’ why I dare educate you, : ))

    Great video. I like learning about woodworking and use your channel a lot. I'm in film and to give you an easy paper roll tip, flip the rolls around so the natural curl comes towards you and not back. This will help with those seamless infinity shots. Thanks for posting this. Makes me want to instal one in my garage now.

    In addition to what Andrew Alexander added, those white things at the top are to prevent the chains jumping and should be horizontal as per the instructions you showed.
    Also, I always used a homemade spring clip at each end and in the centre of each roll to keep it tightly rolled and prevent the paper unravelling
    (In my case I made these clips by bending a flat piece of metal scavenged from a suspension file which I shaped around a cylinder that was slightly smaller than the paper roll).

    Hey Boss, just though I'd mention, I have this set up in my studio. Because of the direction the paper is rolled, I have my paper turned so it rolls out from UNDER not over, that way you are not fight the curve of the paper as you roll it out and on to the floor or a table top. You can leave your chains on the side where you have them just take the ends out of your rolls and turn the paper so the end with the tensioners becomes the end with the chains. . . . . . . . . . . . (edit) oooops, just saw Douglas Adrian left the same comment. . . cool.

    Add a thin strip of wood across the bottom of the paper to add weight and prevent the paper from moving off track on the roll. Plus you don't have to wait for the paper to relax when unrolling it. That is what we used to do in the photo studios.

    Have you found the paper rolls to sag? As so many times they start sagging and cause wriggles in paper, why you need to install stronger aluminium pipe in them, preferable to have as large outside diameter as the roll has inner diameter.

  • @doubledarefan
    @doubledarefan 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    How translucent is the white one? You could shine colored lights on the back of it, while you illuminate the subject with white light. You could name your background color and make it happen. Of course, that won't work if you lay part of the backdrop on the floor or on a table, unless you use a transparent table.

    Would it help to maybe glue a dowel rod to the bottom end of the paper as a bit of weight. Like you'd see on blinds.

    • @doubledarefan
      @doubledarefan 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Or a ½" or ¾" PVC pipe. If needed, slide steel rods into the pipe to add weight. Remove the rods before rolling up the papers, so they won't unroll by themselves.

    • @MichaelAlm
      @MichaelAlm  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks! Only the last little bit is exposed, so I'm not too concerned about the dust. Also if it gets too dirty I can cut away some of the paper and start fresh. There's 12 yards on the roll.

    I can't be fully sure, but it does look like that mounting hardware is not designed to go into bare drywall as you said - they look like concrete anchors. If you try them in drywall, you'd probably break the whole block...

    Why not use a green screen ? then in post-processing (of video or photo); you can add whatever background (color, pattern, texture) that you want. Seems like a lot of trouble and expense for a limited number of options.
