  • We've heard your requests for more Kermie Cam's, and we've listened. Here's one Kermie Cam we think you'll really enjoy. The North American P-51D model Mustang. Part 1 has you doing a pre-flight tour with Kermit while he checks out the plane. Part 2 you'll go in the cockpit and get a first hand glimpse of what it is like to sit at the controls and prepare to fly. In part 3 you'll take off and fly... and there's a couple of surprises along the way. Hope you enjoy.

When he climbed into the clouds I just imagined him getting stripped off his licence. There are minimum distances you have to keep between you and the clouds when you're flying under VFR. Ignoring such important safety rules is pretty bad piloting...

Thanks for a good show. I learned a lot. I have never flown. My father flew in WW2 over Belgium in a P-47 Thunderbolt. He wouldn't talk much about his service, so I never knew anything about his experiences flying a war machine and all that is involved; so much to remember. Wow! I am so very proud of my Dad; his name and title are:

I really admire how you handled the gear situation. You immediately noticed there was a problem, attempted to lower the gear again, made a quick diagnosis based on knowledge and experience, and then developed and executed a plan of action. I wish my wheel landings looked half that good. Very well done!

My Dad flew P-47s in ETO. When I was a kid, I'd study his flight manuals.
I think secretly, he would have liked a ride or two in later life, but he always said he had flown one too many 'business trips' to be comfortable with it.
None the less, we all appreciated the fact that these birds still fly.
Thanks for your videos and the effort and $$$ it takes to keep these birds aloft.
These birds are part of 'The Greatest Generation'. A chapter in history no one should ever forget.

Watching this gives me enormous respect for those who fought using the P-51's, both the pilots and maintenance crews. For the pilots there had to be a huge amount of training on just operating the plane before they could advance to being able to learn to fighting with it, a whole other skill set. From the cockpit's view it brings more reality to just how harrowing (or invigorating) it could be to fly over the Pacific and then engage the mission. My grandfather was an aviation hydraulics mechanic in the Pacific theatre during WWII. He would not talk about his experiences. It must have been hell doing all that island hoping on the way to Japan.

I've admired the aircraft of WW2 since I was a little boy. I guess I've built more models than I can count but at 59 I've never seen a P51D in person. My Uncle flew combat over Europe in a P47 with 2 and 1/2 aerial kills to his credit. The men who flew those planes have always been my hero's. I was born a generation too late.

One of my favorite planes of all time! I've flown a quality P-51D flight sim and that made this series of videos that much more enjoyable for me because the Devs did such a good job on the sim that the sounds were familiar as were the procedures and it was awesome seeing an actual experienced pilot doing the things that you do in the sim, but in a way that is practical and just can't be simulated, no matter the quality.

In 1957 our Unit the 167th FG from WVa ANG retired our Mustangs and was the very last USAF Unit to fly the P-51 Mustang. The Mustang at the AF Museum actually came from our Unit. The 167th and our Mustangs were activated during the Korean War in 1950. As a kid in the early to mid 50's, use to see them in the air all the time over Charleston, WVa. area. Love the sound of the Mustang !!! Several Mustangs still flying today came from our Unit. Great 3 part Video of this BEAUTIFUL P-51 !!! Thank You ! Love it !!!

Around 1955, I remember seeing a P-51(probably by then called an F-51)with an ANG Unit still flying out of Pittsburgh. And then when I moved to Florida in 1956 to finish High School,I remember seeing them being restored by Cavalier Aviation at the Sarasota/Bradenton Airport for private use. It always was a Great Plane.

That is such a man's plane ...such a raw flying machine. The pilots back in the day must've had such brutal instincts - imagine if the pilots who received this aircraft as new technology had the confidence of ejection seats and iPad GPS! Really appreciate the flight, Kermit, along with your excellent narration. It gave me a sense of what was going on when my father, Major Richard "Pete" Peterson of the 357th FG, gave me a ride in Charles Osborn's replica P-51D "Hurry Home Honey" over Oshkosh. We flew with a half dozen other P-51's, chased each other around the skies, and rolled just like that. It was a memorable gathering of the top aces of that fighter group including Kit Carson, Bud Anderson, Tommy Hayes, and Chuck Yeager. I was amazed by how stiff the wings were and how smoothly the plane flew through the air. There was no buffeting at all. Pete and I got a big kick when Ed Shipley, flying another P-51 on our tail, banged the "talk" button on his mic, and it made a machine gun sound...he laughed about now being able to say he downed a triple ace!

You're living my dream.....but at least I got to backseat in a Mustang. I was a race photographer at the Reno Air races for an Unlimited team/51 in the mid-70's, Lefty Gardner. I got to go around the pylon course, TRYING to pull a camera off my chest w/ the G-loads. MEMORABLE

Glad it was only the gear light! Those overflights with the Pilots Eye View brought back memories of flying over your field in Crazy Horse with Lee Lauderback! Thanks for bringing us all along for the ride!!!
