I was treated to a tour of the heritage hangar at Biggin Hill for my birthday. An absolutely amazing experience for anyone who has a passion for these aircraft.. the highlight was being allowed to sit in one...as I settled in to the seat I felt the tears just roll down my face... It is impossible to describe. I swear I could feel all those who had sat in her all those years ago. It was an honour, privilege and as someone else mentioned, it is the most beautiful killing machine ever built. Please, if you are in the uk, it is worth the trip to Kent to support their work. Priceless for the memory and to smell the cockpit is just intoxicating. I cannot thank and admire all who flew in the war enough... you brave brave men and women. Thankyou.

I'm a pilot and the first model I built as a child was the Spitfire. Never got to fly one but I did get to sit in the cockpit of one at Reno a few years ago and I was very surprised at how cramped the cockpit was and how poor the forward visibility is while on the ground. I looked at the CAF pilot and told him I thought I could fly it and he said sure you could, now get out.

I was born near kenley aerodrome in Surrey it was one of the airfields used in the Battle of Britain and through the war ,and as kids we used to roam around the empty barrack buildings ,and later when it was used as a base for glider pilots a spitfire was placed at the gate as a memorial and most days I walked past it ,,now I get to fly in one what an amazing sound ,

If you were a Luftwaffe pilot unlucky enough to be shot down...it was always a spitfire that got them. there was a certain snobbery being hit by a spitfire and not a hurricane even though there were far more Hurricanes in the Battle of Britain period......

I found that quite exciting, I had a ride in the back seat of a Mustang trainer once and you could not imagine how loud that engine is if you have not been there yourself, a 15 min ride was plenty, the young guys must have felt like jelly after a bomber escort run. Just like in this video, the half throttle rate of climb is astounding, pity my pilot was not allowed to give it the message and crank it right up.

If it wasn't for Britain bastardizing a P-51A by dumping the Allison engine, lengthening the Engine cowling/mount, then adding the Rolls Royce engine, the 51 would have been a low level reconnaissance plane and no one would have know what it was today. By adding the Rolls Royce, we (alliance) had a thoroughbred. The Rolls Royce was later produced under license by Packard in the states being called the Merlin. Now we (alliance) had one hell of a fighter. The Spitfire saved Great Britain and the 51 stormed Germany. Thank you Great Britain for everything!

Thank you for showing what a real pattern looks like. I have seen so many fly out there for miles ( literally) and it's infuriating. I was taught that a pattern size is governed by if you loose your engine you should be able to get onto the airport. Being that it is a beautiful Spitfire made it all the more enjoyable.

I really liked that. That was great. I was waiting for a barrel roll but I don't fly a 4.5 million dollar Spitfire so I forgive you. I do fly a 5 thousand dollar hang glider but hey.. ;-)

Very young men took these machines up and risked their lives to protect their homeland and ultimately the course of Western civilization. They are true knights of the sky.

My father, Lt John Hogan, DFC, 2 Squadron, SAAF, flew Mk IX's in combat in the Italian campaign. It was great to see what he would have experienced in flying Spitfires.

Exactly the video I was looking for. How amazing are these war machines. Does anyone know the time it took to complete manufacturing of these from design conception? i figure they were rushed out.

Shame about the no aerobatics rule, but still a joy to listen and see it fly, and landing was fine too, it seems.

I wasn't aware - does the no aerobatics rule apply to warbirds in general? Or is it specific to this airshow? Cheers.

Why do WWII fighters at airshows not do a flat 360 turn? Most jets do this to show off the turn radius, and it just gives a really good, prolonged look at the plane. WWII fighters seem to just do a series of flyby's with a little bit of a turn in there somewhere.
I hear a lot of people throwing around numbers regarding the turn abilities of WWII fighters. It would be great to see it first hand.

WW2 occurred a few years before I was born. But I met dozens of true Combat Veterans throughout my childhood and teen years!
Of poor health myself, I have never served.
BUT, to this very day, I never miss an opportunity to met, shake hands with and THANK each and every Vet I can!
The men and women who served back then (my Mother-in-law was a lady Marine!) truly were Americans GREATEST GENERATION!
    And God Bless every one!

It needs to be made law...
All propellers should only be recorded at 24 frames per second. Then they look far more natural.

who else used to dream about flying one of these as a child. I still do now to be honest. The sound of the engine and the way the spitfire looks are just amazing. Such a wonderful feat of engineering and craftsmanship. If I was super rich I would own two of these. One for me and one for my brother. Rigged up with lazer tagging guns. For fun. With sound effects too.
