Yes. Yes you should. 100 percent. It's a modern classic, I'm my completely irrelevant opinion. Shit rules, yo. Silent circus still always gonna be mah favorite. But this one is way up there.
I was in a band with Dan for a several years in high school. We were both fans of BTBAM before he had the opportunity to join, and we listened to them pretty consistently (we had an independent study class which we used just to listen to and talk about music) leading up to him becoming part of the band. At the time, he was primarily a (phenomenal) guitarist, but our high school jazz band had an excess of guitarists and a major lack of bassists. So, he bit the bullet and picked up the bass. That was a little more than 20 years ago.
View count be damned, this is one of your best videos ever. I've been listening to this band since 2009, and you've managed to put actual theory to it in a simple manor that I can understand in just thirty minutes. Well fucking done. No one else has a video about this song so well-spoken. Kudos.
This is my favorite BTBAM song. I have the lines "Sleep on, fly on. In your mind, you can fly" tattooed on my leg. So I was super stoked seeing you do this song. This band is life changing (hence why I just saw them for my 11th time last week). Dan is such an amazing bassist, and I love how much his bass stands out in everything they do. Props to picking this song. I look forward to more BTBAM videos.
This is the song and album where BTBAM really clicked for me. It's probably not a coincidence that Bad Habits from Colors II has callbacks to this and is my favorite track from that album. I'd be happy to watch you talk about anything BTBAM.
My dad doesn't listen to metal...like at all. But we go see BTBAM together every tour they come around(Dad's a bass player). Colors is probably the biggest influence on me as a musician as well.
Awesome video! BTBAM has been one of my absolute favorites ever since I heard The Silent Circus. I would love to see an analysis of Disease, Injury, Madness (The Great Misdirect is a criminally overlooked BTBAM album). I have always loved the bass solo from it.
I've never been the biggest metal guy, but I was very into this scene and I still listen to BTBAM and Scale the Summit all the time. Awesome being able to watch you in particular analyze this!
Dan is my favorite bassist. on the recent Future Sequence tour, we were standing next to a guy who had never seen them before who was filming a lot. We had told him they were playing our favorite album in its entirety. He kept trying to ask us which song was which, and was confused that we didn't know. Man it all kind of blends together! haha I always have to listen to the whole album
Ha! Yeah, their albums are certainly "one long song" with "named" parts to a lot of people. And, I think that's super cool. There is no one track without the context of the others, despite this video focusing on one.
I would argue that Parallax II is their most apparently split up album. Sure, there are transitions, but they never connect as directly as in the original colors or even Great Misdirect
Dude wasn’t it awesome?! I’ve seen them do their great misdirect album live in its entirety as well. And that was such a wonderful musical treat as well
Thanks for covering btbam. Saw them with thank you scientist and rivers of nihil recently. These guys are so clean live it’s insane. Dan is a crazy musician. I have a Spector bass because of Dan Briggs, Mic Todd, and arif from protest the hero. All my favorite prog/tech bands use it so I figured it was probably what I wanted too!
Amazing seeing you cover some BTBAM, they are such an incredible band. Love to see it, thank you. Colors was my gateway to more chaotic, violent prog stuff. It took me 6 months to get to the end of Colors when I bought it, I couldnt ever get past the 3 first tracks. But the moment I managed I listened to it in it's entirety and I guess my life changed in some ways.
I love Dan so much I've met btbam several times they were cool dudes. It was cool being introduced to your future band opening for btbam! Great reaction!!
They're the coolest, most hilarious guys ever the few times I've met them. I've spent a little more time with Dustie and Dan when we toured together. Appreciate the kind words, see you around!
I've talked to dustie, tommy, dan, and Blake. But Paul is a lone wolf. He's been nice every time I got to say hello, and I think it's a shame he is left out of the best guitarists of our generation conversation personally.
@@bullghani he's just not a virtuoso. Paul is fantastic but people like to get caught up in semantics surrounding technicality. I'm late to the party, but Lay Your Ghosts to Rest by BTBAM is an increidible show of Dan's unabashed affinity to deviate from the guitars. The bass in that song sells me so hard.
Nice!! I really wanted to catch that tour, but couldn't. I'm not quite as familiar with Parallax II, but what I've heard was killer as always. I listened to it a few times when it came out, but need to revisit.
THANK YOU!!! I really appreciate this video as an in depth theory based analysis of the song. Even as a non bass player this really helped see how this song works from a theory perspective hoping to use this stuff in my own journey just from how much I love this band!!
I remember waiting for this album to come out. And the day if dropped and I picked it up, I just sat mouth agape, listening from cover to cover. This entire album just solidified BTBAM as my favorite band.
Amazing. I had the weirdest exposure to them - seeing an embedded video on their MySpace page of Colors Live, that I was redirected to from Dream Theater’s MySpace after Progressive Nation 2008 was announced. Foam Born A just grabbed me like nothing else had at the time.
@LowEndUniversity I'm a drummer. Played in a punk band through high school. And like many punk kids, I went heavier and heavier as I got older. Punk led to hardcore. Hardcore led to metal. Then, in the old days, I torrented Technical Death Metal after being shown Vornagar. In that torrent were bands like Cryptopsy, Psycroptic and Between the Buried and Me. And the rest is history. Haha
Love it! I went from classic rock straight to Metallica when a friend showed me Ride the Lightning. And went straight from there to prog when another showed me DT.
Thanks so much Alex - in all honesty, listening to it this critically, I heard things I haven't noticed before while filming this. Namely the b5 integration of that riff, it dawned on me that it was done to set up the blues part. There is so much density and cohesiveness to this album, I'm sure there are more things waiting to me discovered on my end.
@@LowEndUniversity honestly this album changed the way I listen to music as a whole not only metal.. it has so many layers and time changes it was the first album to truly blow my mind front to back. It was perfect.
My favorite part about btbam is their density. It takes so many listens to truly comprehend their music. Dan has the best bass lines I’ve ever heard in that sense
What a great episode. I absolutely adore this album and "Prequel to the Sequel" had a HUGE influence on me learning the bass. Keep em coming bro. I work from home and I love putting on a fresh episode while I do my coding :D
This album was my intro to BTBAM and Ive never looked back. I am not a musician except for dabbiling in the drums when I was younger, but the first 2 things that im drawn to in any song/band is the bass and drums and Dan and Blake are phenomenal!
I agree - I really think it'll be in a museum one day. I value it that much, and I know others do as well for what it did to the metal scene. Appreciate the kind words!
I drove 6 hours to see them play both Colors albums a couple weeks ago. Got covid on top of that. Still sooooo worth it. Dan was a pure treasure to watch and I would love for you to do the entire album at some point because this makes me appreciate it even more!
Awesome reaction! Learned a lot! I saw BTBAM open for Meshuggah in 2014, and they played The Parallax II all the way through flawlessly. Hands down one of the best sets I have ever witnessed. Would love to see a reaction/analysis of a track off that album, it's so underrated in my opinion!
Just trust me - put on this whole album and really take it all in. I first heard the first track and it was very accessible. It really sucks you in and sets up the whole album. When it kicked in and got heavy, I was already sold on it despite being unsure of the vocals. That first track is really just an "overture", but is the key to how the rest of the music unfolds behind it.
New subscriber here! Once you finish listening to Colors now you have to listen to colors 2! BTBAM is my favorite band of all time! Excellent video dude
A song from my youth that I still enjoy the bass of today is Thrice - Stare At the Sun. Might be worth checking out if you want a short video, but Remco is still my number one request!
Do the viridian solo! I love that you’re doing this. He’s been one of my favorite bass players since he joined btbam too. Amazing player, always tasty.
As a hardcore Arif Mirabdolbaghi (formerly of Protest The Hero) enjoyer myself, Dan Briggs is the man! 😎 When I heard his bass playing, my mind was blown. It’s the cleanest yet most technical type of playing that I truly fancy.
Going to see them with Rivers Of Nihil and Thank You Scientist July 31. Can't wait! By the way, I just got my first bass at 45. I've been wanting to learn for decades and just never took the plunge. I haven't read music since middle school. Would you suggest in person lessons to start or get familiar with it using online courses like Yousician. Thanks
I was a little late to BTBAM, I picked up The Parallax Part 1 on a whim (I was a big fan of Glass Casket) and they kept me in a chokehold for like 5 years after that 😅
Not as much of a metal head nowadays, but BTBAM is still my favorite band. Determined that I love when people do stupid shit really REALLY well. They are so damn silly…. A perfect example of this is the “drunken riff” in Blot. These dudes are incredible.
I have to admit I couldn't get into BtBaM for a long time, but eventually it clicked and started making sense. Now I consider them one of the most unique bands out there. For sure I could never list 5% of theoritical aspects you just throw off the cuff, but aside from all the technical qualities - what I find especially appealing is that surprise factor and dynamics in their compositions. At one moment you're listening to a really nice "clean melodies" section that's building up and then it suddenly goes sideways into absolutely raw and brutal death metallish grind. It almost feels like the artist is telling you "we don't give a flying f**k about proprieties" and I love that. Thank you for the vid and your analysis! P.S. (as a portable audio enthusiast) do you mind me asking what in-ears do you use?
Please do a video of Brandon Giffen playing his playthrough of the song algorithmic salvation by his band the zenith passage. He has amazing tone and technique that i think you'll get a kick out of.
Found your channel in the somewhat recent past and I’ve been going back in the history a bit and found this. I got to see them not long after this came out and it was incredible. I believe they opened for Opeth. Anyways I’m sure you’re aware but they’re touring Colours and Colours 2 played in their entirety on back to back nights this year. I badly want to go but can’t as the closest show is 5.5 hours and not doable.
Colors is one of the few albums that always gets a full playthrough and has since day 1. I love the earlier stuff, but Colors brought it all together. Spiritual Migration by Persefone is the other album that always gets a front to back listen.
I remember when they opened up for DT a long time ago and that was the first time I heard of them, Yo Mark it would be cool if you went live once a week so we can all talk bass? When we getting some Haken?
I'm practicing with Dan's songbooks these days and while the lines are not that hard to play chops-wise for me, how he learns all that stuff to play it live in one go is just so beyond me lol. BTBAM is one of these bands where if you don't know your theory and you try to memorize say an hour's worth of material as an amateur it's just daunting. Stuff like Dream Theater is almost easy in comparison, haha
Such beautiful reverence for one of the greats. People nowadays love to mention how boring and formulaic music is, and I’m always like, “Hello! BTBAM!!!!” ❤
69th like. Nice. Awesome band, glad to see some knowledgeable analysis if Dan's playing! I'm astounded by the depth of musical theory and those who know it!
~ n i c e ~ And, thanks for the kind words. There is so much to unearth with their music, but I think I covered the critical parts! Glad you enjoyed it!
I tried (and mostly failed) to play some of Dan's stuff. For awhile it made me play differently off the kick then I was used to because I came from a thrash background So when I tried to play with my friends after that they'd get pissed because it definitely didnt fit into what they wanted to play lol I was also probably off or something because it just wasn't something I was ever good at I wish because of him I formally learned music theory and technique
Sooo jealous! I forgot why I couldn't go, but just couldn't make it. I usually have to travel quite a bit to see good shows. If they ever do a 20th Anniversary...I'll be there!
@@LowEndUniversity I live in Kannapolis which is right outside of Charlotte so it was pretty convenient. They come here alot them being from Raleigh NC they keep us well entertained.
@@InsaneMonk89 yeah that was at the end of the show when his son was up on stage with them I guess that’s how you know I was there he had headphones on because it was effin loud.
What’s so funny is every fellow musician I’ve shown btbam to that says they do not like heavy music at all, goes absolutely apeshit for them. “This is fucking insane” - my 65 year old uncle who can’t stand metal.
It's just a ''thinking'', but to me this was the most MUSICAL Album. I love all BTBAM's Albuns, but COLORS is the more immersive. In studio's quality, of course is the COLORS II, but musically is the BEST. After COLORS, PARALLAX.
Its really too bad that Dan is now out of BTBAM and I hope the replacement they find will be up to the task. BTW, what do you think of the sequel album "Colors II" @lowendUniversity? I think its actually even better believe it or now as this first one had a very similar impact on me as you described when it came out.
I am not a fan of growly vocals but Opeth is a band i fell in love with because of Steven Wilson's involvement... I'm such a fan of his that i got into them after finding out he produced an album of theirs... they are also masterful players... what do you think of them? I still don't gravitate towards vocals like that but i do love Opeth, at least the stuff before they went into their new 70s prog sound which i lost interest in... their chord progressions are killer, i just love their ability to make artful metal!
Love this reaction but their Colors Live performance is so good there's no reason to react to the studio version when we can see the band playing it in real time!
This video made me sad. Had tickets to see them in Nashville last night but flight got cancelled. Great breakdown, made me appreciate them more, and therefore even more pissed not to see em!
Glad you enjoyed it - just remember they are one of the hardest-working bands, and you'll have tons of chances in the future. At least, I told myself that when I missed them too...ha!
Should I do this whole album start to finish one day? 🤓😅
Absolutely! :D

Just curious if anyone has listened to trioscapes?
Yes. Round About.
Bass Vader
Finally
EVERYTIME!
Sick.
When you say they're in 3, I think what you mean is they're in 4 with a triplet feel
Right - those are interchangeable and can be referred to either way!
I would humbly request to see your reaction to Ne Obliviscaris, maybe Suspyre?
I like sun of nothing or informal gluttony
🔥🔥🔥
69th like.
For awhile it made me play differently off the kick then I was used to because I came from a thrash background
So when I tried to play with my friends after that they'd get pissed because it definitely didnt fit into what they wanted to play lol
I was also probably off or something because it just wasn't something I was ever good at
I wish because of him I formally learned music theory and technique
A staple to progressive metal and a must listen too. Had the privilege to see them perform this album during the 10year anniversary in Charlotte 🙌🏽🤘🏽
I was also their killer show
Hell yea dude, when they played Mordecai for their encore I about fainted 😅 such an awesome show
Sooo jealous!
“This is fucking insane” - my 65 year old uncle who can’t stand metal.
do John Entwistle. Underrated bassist.
Try My Generation song.
I plan on it! I'll add to my list!
the best album 2010
Cept it came out in 2007 my man. I will never forget lol
Im pretty sure Dan is still in the band
Maybe your thinking of Dustie?
?? You mean dusty - rhythm guitar?
A friend who recorded an album with Jamie King said Dan doesn’t really like metal so when they write heavy stuff he tries to do weird stuff
At least, I told myself that when I missed them too...ha!
they have a bass player??
yeah
@@LowEndUniversity lol,,, just kidding, their the only cookie monster band i listen too,, just because they're so damn good...
ORBS!
🐜🐜🐜
Have you looked at August Burns Red?
I'm not super familiar with the band, but am definitely aware of them. Any songs I should do??
@@LowEndUniversity "The Frost" has a pretty heavy bassline.
Please consider analyzing/reacting to musical works by Michael Manring.
Atheist - mother man
Or any song off of unquestionable presence. Jazz influenced tech death
I'd LOVE this band if they would just stop doing embarrassing crap like acoustic guitar bar fights and french cafe breakdowns.
