    Learned something. My cottage pie and shepherds pie never came out right. Now I know to add the flour and to bake it longer so that the meat sauce thickens. I'm thinking back to our menu as kids. Campbell's alphabet soup. Or canned spaghetti on toast. The Royal children are served the very best that money can buy right from the start. No beans on toast. Mama writes a menu and the cook prepares it all. The good life. So many little extras that are just taken for granted. Who would want to give that up? Every month they should invite someone to stay just to have a magnificent experience. The experience of a lifetime. Someone should have suggested that. Unobtrusive. Just stay in the servant's quarters. It's a fantasy but how wonderful would that be? A week would suit me fine. Wishful thinking but it IS possible. Not now with the virus. You can tell I've been indoors too long. What about a wicker basket? Send me a wicker basket full of treats. ha ha ha ha (I added the laughter after reading my plea.)

    • @irishka_zolotse
      @irishka_zolotse 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Imho it depends on a mama to give her kids good food, if a mama is able to buy some canned spaghetti and toast, why not the vegs and some ground beef? One does not need to be a queen or to have servants to cook good, just a little time...

    • @goldkhw
      @goldkhw 3 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      @@irishka_zolotse There was no veg. No ground beef. Everything was rationed in England during the War and for years after. With four children to feed, Mama heated up a can of spaghetti and gave us spaghetti on toast. (Bread was not rationed) I still gave that to my kids years later because it tasted so good. You eat it with a knife and fork. And beans? You can make toast fingers and circle the plate with them, like the spokes of a wheel, and the children can eat the toast with their fingers and dunk it into the beans in the center of the plate. The things we ate when that was all there was. And we loved it all because we were hungry. You know, I never thought that what my children were eating was odd. And they didn't either. Everything was made into a meal when I was a child. I was baby-sitting a little girl years ago, and she has told me now that that was the first time she had ever tasted spaghetti on toast. She also remembered my asking her if she would like a banana for dessert. She talks about it to this day. Because I sliced it into a bowl and sprinkled just a little sugar onto it and poured milk onto it. She ate it with a spoon. I realize now that all food had to be "padded" and have ingredients added to make it special because food was special at that time. I would take a little glass jar and walk miles looking for blackberries. One day, I had circled back to walk home with a solitary blackberry in my little jar when I noticed a wall of huge, ripe fruit behind a church rectory. Oh, my goodness. I was 8 years old. I knocked on the front door of the mansion, because the rectory WAS a mansion. A lovely, elderly, lady answered. I asked her if I could pick some blackberries. After looking at my little empty jar she said, "Yes." I quietly filled my jar, walked the miles home, put the berries in a bowl, squashed them with a fork, sprinkled a little sugar on them and added a drop of milk. I remember sitting, alone, silently eating my delicious blackberries. No one was home. I hadn't spoken all day to anyone except the lady in the rectory. Well. In hindsight, and I'm not deeply religious, but larger forces were at work that day. What with the church and the rectory and the "ripe to perfection" huge blackberries. Was it all a beautiful dream do you think? No. It was a blessing. Just a little blessing.

    Why do so many British and Australian people get the use of "brought" and "bought" wrong so frequently. At 26:48 she says "Prince William was bought down". it's supposed to be "brought". Bought is the past tense of buy. Brought is the past tense of bring. You bring Prince William down (present tense) or your brought Prince William down (past tense). Unless you purchased/buy/bought Prince William some where along the line, you don't use "bought". Brits. Aussies! Get it right!
