@@ParissaKhoury All very reliable. The only thing I seem to remember, was a starved oil supply to the four pot fir the 123. This engine appeared in the 190E but there was a modified sprayer update soon fir these. The straight six was legendary in both models, the only problem was a front engine oil gasket failure, a seepage but an easy fix. Well, the V8s, absolutely no problem, probably the best V8 of its time. The only thing I can remember was an alternaor glitch but very rare.
My favourite Mercedes of all time is the 560 sec with the aftermarket wheels from Carat Duchatelet or Brabus, (I know not original!). Best wishes.

I sat in this same 1990 Benz 300SE car, but in dark blue back in 1991 when my friend's dad from elementary school drove us home from the mall. It was my first S-Class experience. I thought the ride was out of this world, like floating on a cloud and the interior was very quiet. I thought the interior and exterior was classy. I would say it's like Rolls Royce/Bentley classy! It's still classy and it has classic styling. The last time I sat in S Class was a 2011 S350 4matic and it didn't feel much different than a modern day Honda Accord when it came to the car's interior and ride and handling quality. The friend's dad owned an autobody shop and he said that the parts were very expensive. The friend's dad told us that the 1990 Toyota Camry quality was as solid as the Mercedes Benz S Class when it came to the construction and built quality because he also owned one and taking it apart was extremely difficult because the Camry was so solidly built. Though the Camry was solidly built, the Corolla were probably built better because there are more old Corollas in that era than the Camrys.
Engine mount virtually never fails on this car.
It's built like a tank keeps all the vibration away from it's occupant.

Dang this makes me want to get my 1985 380se painted. I have the champagne color and the paint is faded and the clear coat is coming off. The interior on mine is near perfect and the car is rust free and mechanically perfect. I have done a ton of work to get it where it is mechanically, but now I want it to look like it's in as good of a condition as it actually is.

I had one, it ran very well. I sold it with 220,000 miles, traded it for a 740 IL BMW that was very brittle. I changed the oil, tires, fuel pump and radiator. Those were the only issues.
John the sel is a little bigger. 100,000 miles on these things is nothing so I hear. It's an estate sale . need something reliable, some health issue.

That is a beautiful rear end......the car I mean - the girl is alright as well. I own a 1989 Mercedes Benz 300SE; its a great vehicle. It drives better than most new cars I have driven and it costs less to maintain than most 5 + year old cars as long as you do most of the basic maintenance yourself; I would know, because I specialise in taxation and I know exactly how much my clients (hundreds) spend to maintain their vehicles.

i love w140 and its ride quality but i think the overall build quality of the w126 is better, and will be me a more sought after classic in the future.
I agree. I have both. I have an 86 420sel. It's a tank but not great for modern traffic. The w140 is the last of the great Benz but and can still keep up with traffic and drives better than most new cars. I have a 95 a500 and 96 s600. My favorite is the s500
I actually massively disagree! I also have both an 87 380se and a 92 300SE and the construction and build quality overall is vastly superior on the W140.
Despite being used less, I have wood trim pieces falling off around the doors and air vents on the W126 and a few other rattly bits. The W140 interior feels rock solid and the doors and windows are both literally twice the thickness.
I like the lighter feel of the 126 but the solidity of the 140 is unmatched.
I prefer the look of the later 126s though.
