Hey guys! So this is a reupload. I went through copyright hell with this video. No matter what I did it kept getting blocked. Editing it over and over was a nightmare. I've done the best I can so fingers crossed it stays up 🩷

Seeing this in IMAX when it came out was incredible. Every stomp and roar and boom just shook the seats and you could feel it through your whole body. One of the best movie-going experiences in recent memory. I missed the special screenings of this in its black & white version but just got tickets to a special double-feature with this film and "Shin Godzilla" in b&w and I'm SO excited.

Godzilla's G cells infected her when the blast hit her. More than likely, she was killed in the blast, but the G cells regenerated her. She pretty much now has Wolverine like regeneration.

HOLY CRAP, do I believe the Oscar hype!!!! Minus One was beautifully done. Shikishima struggling to deal with survivor's guilt & PTSD suddenly being thrust back into a war against the very creature that put him in that spot to begin with was s hell of a fight. All while struggling to accept the family dynamic with Noriko and Akiko? Amazing.
    *SIDE NOTES:*
I wasn't expecting Noriko to have survived getting caught in that shockwave from the Atomic Breath, but those Godzilla cells literally saved her neck.
The title "Minus One" aludes to the bombings of Hiroshima & Nagasaki setting everything at 0, but Godzilla's arrival sent it down below 0 to -1.

The "minus one" is about post war Japan being at zero (or worst case situation) because of the economic and physical devastation. Then Godzilla shows up and drops the number below zero because of the threat and destruction it causes.

While this is the first Godzilla fiilm to win an Oscar, the 2016 Shin Godzilla won seven awards at the 2017 Nippon Academy-Sho Association awards, including Best Picture and Best Director. It's a very different version of the monster.

Ultimately the ending of this film is more allegorical to the long term effects of a nation being Nuked as Japan is the only nation to have had nuclear fire visited upon them. This film tackles the trauma that the decisions of the leaders of the, at the time, Japanese Empire, which lead their nation to ruin, which is what Minus 1 is in reference to; the ruination of Japan.
As far as Noriko's concerned there'll likely be a fantastical presentation to what was happening on her neck but in reality, though the war is over, the radiation in her system will likely lead to more tragedy down the line as it did for real Japanese people following the atomic bombings.
To this day babies are still being born with horrid deformities in Japan due to radiation mutating the genes of the people affected by that terrible war.
I love this movie. It means so much.

$10 million US adjusted dollars. It's a shame everyone outside of Japan focuses on the US Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences win for Visual Effects, ignoring the fact it was nominated for twelve Awards by the Japanese Academy and won eight, including Best Film.

The Minus One eludes to the concept that Japan suffered a devastating flow to the country from the nuclear war at the end of WW2. They were at "Ground Zero" in 1945 and had to rebuild and restructure their society. So with the appearance of Godzilla's destruction, it brought the country to a level Minus One event.
And BTW the SHOGUN series f*****ing awesome! Watch it post-haste. As there will be a season 2 most definitely/

I bought Godzilla Minus One on TH-cam, and it's the special Minus One-Minus Color version, which really brings back the original Godzilla movie feel from 1954, only X 1,000 more!
And what the Minus One means is this: at the end of WWII, Japan as a nation was brought down to level 0. When Godzilla shows up to wreak havoc on post-war Japan, it brings them down further to -1.

  • @micpere1991

What I liked about this film is it brought Godzilla back to its roots. He isn't a protector of earth or ally to mankind, but death and destruction incarnate. Godzilla is a symbol of the nuclear destruction that Japan faced from the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings. In the film's context, Japan was at it's lowest point post WW2, at a zero so to speak. Godzilla's chaos pushed into the negative, a minus one.

    * Noriko (female lead) might have been infected with G-cells (black mark on her neck) and survived the blast because of its regenerative power.
    * Takashi Yamazaki (director) explained that post-war Japan was at “zero” and the attack by Godzilla, Tokyo was at “minus one” - hence, Godzilla Minus One.
    * Amazing that Godzilla Minus One (2023) was made for under $12 million - just 1/13 of the budget of Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (2024).
The American Monsterverse Godzilla is like a juicy hamburger while the recent Japanese Toho Godzilla is like a gourmet steak - both are “delicious” depending on your mood.
    * The latest American “MonsterVerse” Godzilla movies were full of CGI “eye candies,” and did not require me to think very hard.
In licensed “monster” movies such as Godzilla vs Kong (2021) and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (2024), I just “kicked back” and enjoyed the CGI spectacles.
More importantly, these two big-budget (over 130 million USD each) “popcorn flicks” were hugely profitable globally. This contractually restricts when and where the Japanese Toho could release or stream its Godzilla movies.
    * The latest Japanese “Toho” Godzilla movies were allegories of Japan’s traumas, which required me to think deeply.
In Shin Godzilla (2016), the bureaucratic Japanese government failed to address the 2011 (rapidly unfolding) triple disasters of earthquake -> then tsunami -> then nuclear plant meltdown using an “evolving” Godzilla as an allegory.
In Godzilla Minus One (2023), the people-led effort defeated Godzilla (temporarily) as Japan rebuilt after World War II (post-1945) with a compelling human story of “survivor guilt.”
These two low-budget (under 12 million USD each) “monster” movies won numerous awards including Best Picture in Japan (both) and Godzilla Minus One won an Oscar in the US for Best Visual Effects (the first-ever for a low-budget monster movie).

One of the best monster film ever.
A film where you care more for the humans than for the monster wrecking shit up is really impressive.
Also worth mentioning, the whole thing cost 12 million US dollars. There are movies that cost hundred times more that look much cheaper.
Begs the question, where the money goes in Hollywood?
PS. Shogun is amazing, go for it.

I have a VERY strong stomach for jump scares, so when I say that the scene with the spotlight almost made me nearly shit my whole entire intestines out you know that I'm telling the truth. I don't know what it was about that particular scene, but it startled me so bad that it was literally painful. I was actually worried for a second that my life might be in danger because of how intense that feeling was. I've never been scared that much by a movie and probably never will again. That shit REALLY freaking got me.

Film facts: They took the original Godzilla roar, played it over loudspeakers and re-recorded it, to make it more menacing.
-the spines rising before the breath weapon is fired was inspired by a handgun's hammer being cocked.
-This version of Godzilla is a mix of several Godzillas and their lore.
-Both "Jaws" and "Clash of the titans" inspired certain scenes in this movie.

You probably like history just not the history as it was taught at your school. The key for a lot of people is relevance. Most teens are not interested in politics or military strategy and yet that is the way history is taught. But there's also a history of music, a history of sport, a history of cinema and it often is a more appropriate entry point into history. We're the middle of a story and it only adds to our understanding and wisdom when we see how our world has come into being. Minus One refers to the state of Japan. By the end of the war Japan had been reduced to practically nothing, zero, and then this movie has Godzilla strike which juts brings them down lower than zero, to minus one.

I’m sorry that you feel like people judge you. When people judge and hate on others, it’s not really about you. I just wanted to remind you of that. Or wait, maybe he doesn't feel so guilty - it's the other reasons that he feels very guilty. And in the end he did it anyway except that it was his own decision. That was the difference. It was not nonsense orders 🤨😶

I thought I had seen it before but was not sure? Sorry you had to reupload again' with the 70th anniversary coming up on Nov 3rd you should watch the 1954 original Japanese version and maybe the original 14 sequels within the original series? It should be quite the ride if you decide to go though the 1st series and if you want to make the ride even longer there are tie in films as well too!
There are at least 15 tie in films which play fast and loose with the Toho Showa Universe' of course you don't have to watch them all but the two you need to see for sure are Rodan (1956) and Mothra (1961) as they will both later appear in Godzilla films.
So if you get though the 1st series you still got at least 3 more Godzilla series to watch' the 2nd series will give you some idea of what might happen to Noriko in a future sequel?
Well here's hoping you will start a Godzillathon at some point in time' because I would love to see you go though the entire franchise but you can skip Godzilla 98 and the animated trilogy as well, those ones suck they are not worth your time!
Alright that's it I'm out and hope your video does not get taken down again.
