What I like about this movie; it represents what Godzilla was originally intended to portray, the horrors of war and death and the atomic bombing in Japan. We’ve all grown to love him as an iconic character, whether as a hero or villain or, of course, a force of nature. But, this is his origin story retold.

    • @neneshubby

Even the power of the atomic bomb is no match for the power of the money. That's why they turned him into an anti hero. To keep the franchise going.

Dude the little girl Akiko was so cute and to hear her cry the way she did gave me the feels… I have a 5 year old and I remember when he was that age… to hear him cry like that when he was hurt or scared… as a parent you just want to do something, fix whatever it is. Kudos to the director finding the right child actress. It's literally a dime a dozen to find the right child who can say things like "Mommy" or "Daddy" without it sounding phoned in or having to rely on just being cute.
However, Sae Nagatani as Akiko manages to pull the correct believability to feel like a real child.

One of the most incredible aspects of this film is that it was made with only $15 million. The director played a double role as VFX supervisor and knew exactly how to stretch every dollar and get every shot right. First foreign film in decades to win a special effects Oscar, and deservedly so.

@@toyohimeyeswatatsuki6917 Godzilla definitely has some problems with eye design. Rarely do I think they serve the character and the overall design.
Millennium, Tristar Godzilla, Legendary Godzilla, and Shin Godzilla all got it right, so does the first form of Minus One Godzilla.
      They make him look terrifying.
And Godzilla Earth they managed to make him look like......super ancient, and almost a little sad, but still an absolute monster.
Tokyo SOS Godzilla does the best job of all the old "man in a suit" Godzillas. Better than Minus One's main design, probably.
But soooooooo many of the old Godzilla designs are SO goofy and derpy.....

    • @ieyke
      @ieyke 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

Honestly it's a VERY astute and accurate comment.
Japanese mythology is an offshoot of Chinese mythology.
Bowser appears to be a combination of the French Tarrasque, and the Chinese Dragon Turtle.
Both are turtle shelled dragons with some amount of hair. Though the Tarrasque takes it further, giving it fully a lion-ish mane head of hair, as well as being covered in spikes, just as we see with Bowser.
Dragon Turtles, and Bowser also share facial similarities to the Guardian Lion statues AKA Foo Dogs AKA Komainu AKA Shishi.
Godzilla is a dinosaur/dragon thing, but it's frequently designed with these Eastern-style dragon/mythical beast traits, which are inherently a bit canine/feline. Some sort of underlying mammalian-ness.
As a result, the designs frequently strongly echo the faces of Dragon Turtle and Komainu statues, just as Bowser does, though obviously without the shell, mane, and spikes.
It's more in the face design.
Those Eastern mythology dragon face traits that borrow mammalian lion and dog features....
(And the mammalian traits even echo through the overall body shape, thought that of course was for practical necessity reasons of having to cram an actor in the Godzilla costumes.)
That's a huge part of why Legendary Godzilla was the best Godzilla design (before they ruined it in GVK and GXK).
Legendary Godzilla is FULLY a reptilian design on a surface level.
Like it has no mane, or canine teeth, or little silly ears or cat nose or anything.
And that makes it feel FAR more realistic and plausible as some sort of massive lizard or dinosaur, or even falling more within the realm of our accepted expectations of what a dragon is.
BUT, his overall proportions and structure and movements are overwhelmingly designed to look and move like a MASSIVE bear.
He got upgraded to echoing not jus a dog or lion, but the most massive and terrifying of ALL mammalian land predators.
      BEARS.
His bipedal lumbering walk echoes a bear's bipedal walk.
His crouching run and quadrupedal gallop echo a bear charging on all fours.
The way his head moves, and the way he handles his mass are mimics of bears too.
But bears are also cute, and somehow THAT comes through too, a tiny bit.
Like there's something about bears that we like and relate to, and that lets us connect to Legendary Godzilla WITHOUT actually doing anything to make him cute.
He's 10000% giant terrifying badass lizard dragon dinosaur monster, but SOMEHOW we still find him a little cute and something we can connect to, and THAT allows us to so easily buy into and cheer for him as the hero.
Something about the design allows us to project a feeling of benevolence on him.
Somewhere under all that ruthlessly badass indestructible armored lizard dragon design is a distant echo of your puppy, or a teddy bear, or your cat.
In GvK, to make Kong seem like the hero, they began screwing with Legendary Godzilla's design, screwing up his proportions, giving him longer arms to allow for more of crouching crawl-style movement, having him burst out of the water a ton to snatch his prey, and just overall adding a LOT of crocodilian traits to his build and movements.
Because we don't relate to crocodiles.
      They're terrifying.
      They're the bad guys.
It was just the wrong direction for Godzilla.
Both because we need that relatability to see Godzilla as the hero (he WAS ultimately one of the heroes), AND because those mammalian traits tie back to that classic Godzilla design, and the Dragon Turtles, and Komainu, and Bowser, etc etc etc.
It's simply more authentic to what Godzilla is supposed to be.

Godzilla Minus One was my favorite movie of 2023. I saw it in a theater with a sound system so over-the-top that when Godzilla stepped, it felt like an actual earthquake. It was viscerally terrifying, as if the monster was physically real. Sadly, you don't get that experience from watching it at home, but it's still a masterpiece of moviemaking. Think about it: A subtitled Japanese monster movie was the number one movie in America for a couple of weeks, and only through word-of-mouth. Truly a cinematic marvel.

This movie was made for a fraction of Hollywood blockbusters, and yet is so much better. Just goes to show that it isn't CGI and battle scenes and spectacle that make a great movie. It's the human element. It's the story of those people and their lives that happen to get affected by something big, and not a story of that big thing. I wish Disney/Marvel would remember that with their blockbuster films.

The part that didn't dawn on me at first that I really grew to appreciate; is how when Tachibana chose to save Koichi, he was not only forgiving him but also saving himself. That man had been a mechanic specifically for kamikaze planes, knowingly sending many men to their deaths. On top of that, he was unable to save any of the men who worked under him when Godzilla first attacked, and took his anger out on Shikishima. For a man who had felt guilt for years in being associated with so much death, he redeemed himself by finally getting to save a life.
Also, watch Shin Godzilla. A close second as far as modern Godzilla films go, though nothing can quite top Minus One if you ask me. Shin is ultimately a dark satire that critiques the largely inadequate response Japan's government had to the 2011 Fukushima tsunami and subsequent nuclear meltdown.

I am a Japanese, born at around the time Godzilla flattened Ginza in this movie. As a kid, I can recall how Tokyo was several years after the war, and so I have total respect for my parents' generation that took the country from that to civilization. And also to note that in wars, not all people of the nation is behind decisions of the government, so even today, I hesitate to criticize the people of a nation for what their government does.

Every ship and plane you see in this film is historically accurate. Those destroyers and that cruiser did survive the war, all the film did was alter their final fates a bit. Interestingly, the destroyer they were on at the end was known to be lucky, as it and her crew survived many battles without suffering any casualties or meaningful damage--extremely rare for Japan in WWII. Ultimately, she ended up with the Chinese Navy and survived with the Nationalists in Taiwan until the 1970s and there was some debate about making her a museum. Ultimately, she was scrapped along with the others, but not before some of her relics were returned to Japan as a goodwill gesture.

Godzilla Minus One is more of a "spiritual descendent" of the original 1954 Godzilla film. It's actually set in the 1940's which is before the original Godzilla was set. Several scenes are a clear call backs to the original, the two most obvious are when Godzilla picks up the train with his mouth and the radio announcer and photographers doing their jobs right up until they died at the hands of Godzilla.

Setting it just after the war helps to emphasize that with the Americans refusing to get involved due to the fear of escalating tensions with the Soviets that it is up to the Japanese people to save themselves. Under the surrender terms of 1945, the Japanese were not allowed any form of armed forces with the Japanese Self Defense only being formed in 1954, being allowed by the US at the time as it meant that Japan could take up more responsibility for its own defense, which up to that point had been the responsibility of the US.
Most of the events in the movie have historical context, with the mine clearances, the atomic bomb test and the Takao all having a basis in fact. Takao was sunk as a target ship in October 1946 (source National Museum of the US Navy) having been laid up in Singapore being deemed unrepairable after being damaged in attacks during WW2.
I love this movie and tear up every time I watch it. I would rate this as my favourite Godzilla movie hands down particularly due to it's focus on a small number of main characters and am waiting for it to become available for purchase in the UK. (Currently I can only watch it through Netflix on streaming here.). The fact that it was not allowed another run after it's Oscar success, (reportedly due to a deal that stated it could not compete with King Kong x Godzilla) is a travesty.
Something that I only picked up after multiple watches, (I saw this 3 times in the cinema) is that the main character is constantly being told to "live". The letter from his mother telling him to "come back alive, Noriko, and even Tachibana when showing him the ejection seat all emphasize this message.
So glad you enjoyed the movie. Shame I missed you reaction to the table headbutting bows when he is trying to find Tachibana.

Godzilla was originally a dinosaur that lived in the deep sea about 140 million years ago. Repeated hydrogen bomb tests awoke him from his slumber, and he became a giant monster with the energy of hydrogen bombs harbored throughout his body, attacking humankind. That blue ray is radioactive energy. The power of the huge explosion and black rain depicted in the movie is the same as that of the atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. In reality, too, it burned and crushed buildings and people in an instant, destroying everything. Humanity must never forget the horror of war and nuclear bombs. I believe that human life should be given the highest priority.

Unlike most 'monster' movies, Godzilla in this movie represented all of the hate, destruction, misery, etc...that culminated due to WWI and WWII. The world had just gone through more than a decade of the horrors of war. And in this movie, Godzilla was the result of so much of the dark side of humanity.
His atomic/nuclear breath was a reflection of the device created to end the war against Japan, initially developed by Germany, and brought to grim realization by America. It's impact was inevitable, though devastating. The after effect still felt until this day.
'Godzilla Minus One' was showing us the horrors of humanity, and the struggles to move forward from devastation and loss.

Sobbing like a child over a Godzilla movie certainly wasn't on my 2023 bingo card, but here we are. Saw the movie over and over again in theaters and forced my whole family to watch it and my mom and dad both cried too. Oscar worthy. Beautiful. And when you realize that this movie was made on a budget of under 15mil and is still this high quality... shots were fired over Hollywood's bow with this one.
As for other Goji movies, you kind'a picked the high mark to start with so it's all down from here. You've seen the original, if you want to focus on the serious tone movies like Gojira and Minus 1 then Return of Godzilla (1984), Godzilla, Mothra, King Ghidorah (2001), and Shin Godzilla (2016) are the only ones left that take themselves seriously to that degree. All the others are various levels of camp, which is still fun in it's own way, but will probably feel very odd after Gojira and Minus 1.

But Minus 1 is a very high bar and is basically sans cheese. If she tries to watch, say, Godzilla vs Megalon after this, it's going to be a pretty big contrast, and I imagine for people not already on the Goji bandwagon it could be hard to make that transition into the cheesier Goji movies after watching something like this. If she's a little more selective and starts with say, Mothra vs Godzilla, or Godzilla Returns, or GMK, then she could maybe ease into the classics, but you probably wouldn't want to show a new fan coming off of Minus One something like Final Wars. Who would have thought a Godzilla film with its amazing $15 million dollar budget would make people cry.
There were a lot of emotional scenes throughout the film, but these two scenes hit me the most. The first one was Noda's response and tone to a subordinate who interpreted his statement to "go home and spend time with your family" as "be prepared" for your death. During the war, all the veterans in the room had seen their comrades in arms and friends receive tragic orders to go on a one way mission and in the end die in vain. Noda wanted everyone to understand this mission, although dangerous, was going to be different. They were armed with the right tools to maximize their chance to win and come home alive! It was not a suicide mission.
"Come to think of it this country has treated life far too cheaply. Poorly armored tanks. Poor supply chains resulting in half of all deaths from starvation and disease. Fighter planes built without ejection seats and finally, kamikaze and suicide attacks. That's why this time I'd take pride in a citizen led effort that sacrifices no lives at all! This next battle is not one waged to the death, but a battle to live for the future." - Kenji Noda
The second emotional scene was Akitsu, the Captain, and Noda refusing to let Mizushima, the Kid, to go with them on the mission. This one really hit me. As Pacific War veterans, Akitsu and Noda had seen too many deaths. Too many young men perished in vain. I felt this was their personal closure to the war by saving at least one young man. The whole dialogue was great too. It may not be exact, but this is what I remembered:
The Kid: Why won't you allow me to go with you?
The Captain: Kozo (kid)! Not having been to war........is something to be proud of. (Noda and Captain start walking away)
The Kid: Please. Take me with you. We've been a team for a long time. I want to defend my country! I beg you! Please, take me with you! Mr. Noda! Captain!
The Captain: (speaking softly) We leave you........THE FUTURE.
    The soundtrack "Pride" was perfect.

It was more like $12 million. The director was an effects guy and knew how to get the most out of a small team. Every effects shot was carefully planned before filming and they got as much as they could "in the can" with practical sets. It's the same approach as the Lord of the Rings movies, which is why those still look a lot better than anything out of Disney Star Wars or Marvel lately. The recent Dune movies also took the same approach, everything was storyboarded and planned out very carefully and the effects people were on the set during filming to make sure everything was shot in a manner that would make it easy for the effects studio to do their jobs.
Modern Hollywood films cost $350 million apiece now because they don't even have a finished script before they start filming, they do no planning at all, and their attitude is "we'll fix it in post". They don't even know what the story is going to be until they start editing together whatever random coverage they got in front of green screens, then they rush a bunch of reshoots, sometimes more than once. The CGI artists get about two weeks before the film releases to rush together whatever last minute changes got made. It's an insane way to make movies, and the quality has plummeted because of it.

Godzilla vs Destroya. Godzilla 2000 drives THAT point home with a vengeance. In my mind it is a sequel to Destroya which would….. eh.. watch it with that in mind. Which one had Godzilla and his son(like Akiko) hibernate… with the people leaving, saying something like they’ll finally be left alone?
My father, who fought in Korea and Vietnam, in his youth…. was very impacted by the beauty all around him, having grown up in the city. He questioned why humanity would ever choose to fight, destroying what he saw as paradise. “Why would we fight here?” I remember him telling me and my brother about being stationed on a plateau…. and the sky, filled with ice crystals would be often highlighted by rainbows… and how the beauty of the land seemed to defy the horrors of the war…. And even the jungles would fight both sides, with huge thorns, spiders, scorpions…. And how THAT seemed … right.
I’ve always taken that attitude with Godzilla… Kong, was killed…. Shot down from society’s pinnacle… Godzilla was kept alive to curb Humanity’s bloodlust and dismissive attitude towards nature.

Yes. When I was introduced to this movie by reactors, I was like "This is really good...." But because I only saw snippets from their videos, I wasn't completely sold. Then I watched it fully via iTunes: Wow!
I've seen just about every movie that won "Best Picture" from about the 1940s to present and lots of nominees.... But this movie, is in my top 20 of all-time favorites. It's so damn good. The story. The characters. The acting. It looks so damn good. And made completely on a budget of about 10 million dollars... Yes, TEN MILLION... And all the main actors are famous actors in Japan.
Fantastic movie. Trying not to watch it regularly to keep it special... So happy you enjoyed it.

The theme of the original Godzilla movie was to visualize the experience of the Japanese at the end of World War 2. This movie not only captures that but improves upon it. I suspect that this is the only Godzilla movie worth watching. If they make a sequel that will be the next worthwhile movie to watch about Godzilla.

It’s such a great movie, tense, emotional, tragic, scary, and it deals with survivor’s guilt, ptsd, shame, honour, duty, and a real David and Goliath story thrown in there for good measure, with some nods to Jaws and the original Godzilla movie too. It has a great pace, with great characters who we spend time with, so when Godzilla comes along, we actually care about what happens. This is a masterclass in storytelling, and it’s in Japanese.

My favorite part of the story is that so many people had a character arc. From the most obvious, Mr. Shikishima to the young guy, who became the hero with the tugboat team to Mr. Tachibana who was the reluctant mechanic hero. To Sumiko, who struck Mr. Shikishima twice, once at the beginning of the film in disgust and once at the end in relief that Sumiko, Koichi and Akiko would be a family.
This Godzilla film has the best story, with nods to the original and very human and very relatable characters.
I don’t know if you need to react to another Godzilla movie. This one sets the bar pretty high.

godzilla is literally the mc's physical manifestation of his survivors guilt and ptsd. there wasn't a mistake in the writing to make him a kamakaze pilot who chickened out. this was a man who was called on to die for a pointless cause. but when he chickened out, and even the mechanic patted him on the back for doing the right thing, godzilla shows up immediately to kill everyone else. giving the mc a physical demonstration of the lives possibly lost by failing to die earlier. to drive the symbolism home directly he chickens out a second time by not shooting at godzilla. and action we all know is pointless and would have resulting in his death. still the mc got to watch other people die in his place as a result. he comes home and is imediately confronted by a civilian, a neighbor who's children all died in the firebombing of tokyo, who blames "cowards like him" for the deaths of the civilians on the home front, and the MC then finds out, after hearing the accusation that him and people like him are responsible for her childrens... and yes.. parent's deaths, it then starts to sink in... it flashes to his parents letter wishing him to survive the war, and he's breaking down because he survived... for what? a ruined city and a lot of people dead and somehow he was still alive.
it's not a surprise godzilla isn't defeated by a pointless kamakaze attack, but only when the mc wants to live for akiko and is willing to die for her, that the mechanic proclaims he's finally ready to do his duty. then shows him the ejection seat. he had the propper mindset of a warrior, of someone willing to do what was needed. and not pointlessly sacrifice himself in the madness of war.
and litterally by killing godzilla he could finally bury his ptsd and his survivors guilt, the guilt of being a coward. and live again with akiko and noriko.

This movie really pulled out the emotions, I mean you can't help but be in awe when you see Godzilla go on a rampage, but you can't help but feel for the human characters, something that most Godzilla films kinda lack in! Like I said before, see you shed tears Cassie, whether sadness or joy, brings warm feelings to my heart and one of the many qualities I like about you lol! Anyway, yes, definitely watch more Godzilla films in the future! Start with the Heisei films from Godzilla 1985 to Godzilla vs Destroyah, that series actually ties in with the OG 1954 in terms of continuity! Then eventually get around to the Monsterverse from Godzilla 2014 to now with Godzilla x Kong The New Empire lol! Besides, you haven't worn my 70th anniversary shirt yet🥺lol😂 However, save that shirt for when you watch my favorite of the Monsterverse, Godzilla - King of the Monsters (2019) trust me it will be fitting! Loss after a war lost. Is chaotic madness.
This movies touches on so many points of how the after effects of a war can still have shockwaves of destruction.
And for the Japanese iteration of Godzilla. He was the manifested identity of chaos driven destruction in a physical form. That’s why this version is absolutely insanity. They true scare that Godzilla was originally meant to be.

Great reaction Cassie. You were making me emotional.
"Godzilla Minus One" is an excellent remake with great character development. There are several incarnations of Godzilla and this one reflects the original. I prefer Godzilla like this - his original concept as a radioactive force of nature with atomic breath.
There's a great fan based monologue about Godzilla's motivations to destroy ... "I was the last of my kind, and you turned me into the first. That is why I punish you ... because I never though I could be made more alone."
    *SOME FYI:*
-- Noriko survived because she was infected with Godzilla Cells [G-Cells] (the black mark on her neck) which gave her some of his regenerative power.
-- Godzilla has an internal controllable swim bladder for buoyancy, plus his natural buoyant "thick thighs", plus his paddling power of legs and tail makes him "appear to stand waist deep in water" even when he is in deep water.
-- There are several incarnations of Godzilla. He ranges from being a force of nature to an Anti-Hero to a "protective buddy" of humanity.

This was no doubt intended to be a metaphor for the resliience of the Japanese people after the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. And Godzill was actually scary in this film. This film takes him back to his roots as a walking metaphor for the atomic bomb. Now, you need to react to "Oppenheimer".

I've seen most of the Godzilla films, and this one is the most terrifying version of Godzilla, and treats the creature as the absolute force of nature it should be.
This is also one of the few Godzilla movies that actually made me care about the humans. Outside of the amazing performances from the main actors, the crew of the Shinsei Maru were incredible. I love that they were really just bros that loved hanging out with each other, and how mad they'd all get at Koichi for not marrying Noriko and making a family with her and Akiko.
I believe if you were to remove the Godzilla aspect from the movie entirely and just expand this as a movie about the PTSD of a "failed" kamikaze pilot trying to adjust to civilian/family life and also dealing with the shame (both internal and societal) of not performing his duties as a kamikaze pilot, this would still be an amazing movie. But adding in some of the best Godzilla scenes ever put to film makes this even better.

And Godzilla made pretty short work of her.

G-cells or Godzilla cells are what allowed Noriko to survive the attack on Ginza. I don't know how she ended up with G-cells in her body nor do I remember if it was mentioned in the interview.
