DeWalt Atomic 20V vs 12V Reciprocating Saws | Is It the Same Tool?

  • We take a look at the DeWalt Atomic 20V reciprocating saw vs the DeWalt 12V brushless recip saw to see if it's the exact same tool powered by two different batteries. After an initial inspection, all we can say is the housings look identical except for the lack of a pivoting shoe in the 12V model. Weight and size are nearly identical once you remove the battery packs.
After making some cuts in 3-inch PVC, we noticed both have excellent vibration control and seem to handle easier tasks like this with no problem. The 12V DeWalt DCS312G1 definitely shaves some weight during use and might be a tad bit slower in cutting vs the Atomic 20V Max model. The price for the 12V saw is $149 (bare) and $169 as a kit with a 3Ah battery.

    Hi,
Would have been nice to see how the brushed version performed with the new 3.0ah battery.
The two new models looks pretty cool for small projects. People are forgetting that you're not going to demo a house with these particular tool. That's when a sawzall comes in.
Hope dewalt makes larger ah batteries for their 12v line.
    Thanks for the video

Cool video had been wanting to see them side by side. I would go with the 20v for the runtime since it's pretty much the same tool. I really like the old brushed 12v saw. Wish they would have made it brushless.

I love the pivot handle for small jobs!!!😁😁😁 they should make it brushless.

I def think Dewalt should've created a smaller platform for the 12v system. However it costs a ton of chedah to do so. Miluakee seems to have the best 12v tools around imo

I don't like the fixed shoe, minor issue probably just me. The batteries are now 20V 5.0 AH. I'm used to using a bear of a recip saw and it's elec., (ugh). This info is up to date as of December 2022. Obvious DeWalt upgraded the battery. Since Black & Decker bought DeWalt seems like they reduced quality and now are upgrading their tools. I wonder how much business they lost? I sold DeWalt tools for 30 years since the seventies while working for a top industrial distributor. I have lived through the quality change and it wasn't pretty. DeWalt was my go to tool all of my life. Not so much anymore.

20v Atomic. Pivoting shoe, shoe "rafter hook", belt clip, and larger variety of available batteries (1.3Ah all the way to 12Ah). Pretty much everything else (size, weight, power, speed) are almost identical.

Ok, so another DeWalt, I mean Black & Decker design flaw. This is the third time I heard about this happening. DeWalt ain't what it used to be thanks to Black & Decker buyout. I know, I used their tools for thirty years and man, they were such garbage a few years back you couldn't use anything with the DeWalt name on it. I also sold their tools for decades and every other metalworking tool there was.

I recently purchased the DeWalt Atomic compact recip (DCS369) and noticed a rattle/knocking noise that sounds like it's coming from inside motor housing when I shake the tool (not while in use, but when i simply hold tool in my hand w/no battery or blade attached). I contacted DeWalt and they said the noise should not be there so I bought another one to test and it too had the rattle but less of it, so I bought a THIRD and it also has the rattle but less of it than #1 or #2 saws. I've contacted DeWalt and they can't confirm anything for me so I wanted to ask you since you have the tool, does your DCS369 make an internal rattle noise when you shake it? I've been holding all external parts securely (trigger, trigger lock, anything that could wobble) as I shake mine and rattle/knocking noise definitely sounds to be inside motor housing. Thx!

@@Protoolreviews Thanks for reply! I had called a DeWalt Factory Service Center as well, they confirmed the rattle is normal...apparently it's designed with some play in the gears (or some part) and this leads to the rattle noise. Thanks again!

@@tkcarpentry The height of garbage DeWalt since Black & Decker bought them. I just bought one to see if their tools improved since the buyout. They have, I was a Dewalt gal for decades. Sold machine tools and every other tool under the sun power tools, high performance cutting tools yadayadayada. What a disappointment I have 2 of their batt op lawn mowers and they weren't cheap. The first one was a total piece of garbage. Used it one season and everything that could have went wrong did. Batteries - garbage. Mower - garbage. We gave them one more chance and it was like night and freakin' day in the quality. Uh, yeah no rattle anymore. I think they FINALLY go their act together. Just a nightmare and huge and I mean huge disappointment. Way to go Black & Decker.

Still wondering why that 12V line exist. They’re in the process of killing the 40V line and I was pretty sure the same would happen to the 12V line.
That would mean that the 20V and the 60V/120V lines would be the only remaining ones.

12v exists to fill the compact tool line at Lowes and other retailers because the Atomic line is exclusive to Home Depot.
