    Bottom Line: Bodybuilding is bad for your health. I have done it I know. When I was younger I gained (with extreme dedication, sactifice & difficulty) from 135 to over 200 at a constant six ft tall (keeping a 32 inch waist). As Andrew reminds us, extra protein (esp animal) only reduces recuperation and energy.BIG TIME. This is absolutely true and I have experienced it completely. I'm 57 now, been 100% whole food raw vegan for 14 years- and no colds or flu or ANY physical problems (medicine cabinet has a razor and not much else) for that time. But guess what? Strength is off the charts (for me) compared to when I was 25. I've been making strength training the priority (as any longevity fitness program should) in my fitness regime for 40 years. The truth is that MASS-centric bodybuilding and HEALTH are at OPPOSITE ends of the spectrum. No way you can be huge from excess protein and also be even marginally healthy (you will get sick like the rest of most bad eaters- just notice most "mass-seekers" on TH-cam constantly sniffling). Strength and mass (excess mass not that which accompaies true strength increase) are related... but they are two separate specific mechanisms. In nature conservation is basic law so if you try to gain excess weight or muscle mass then you have an uphill battle. It is sooooo much easier to do it with animal protein, or clogging (but popular crap) "protein powders"- what a scam for young boys and brainwashed men! People interchange the words "muscle mass" with strength - that confuses those who have little experience with it and are desperate to add strength and muscle. And makes those who consume it sick and tired, literally. And like Andrew reported from his experinece as well, I too experience phenomenal recuperation from a diet almost indentical to his. (I do take in about 3000 cals daily, and more in heavy training of course.

      Kevin Spencer I meant faddish protein-shake-infused, drug-induced/abused, super high volume non-fitness-oriented, commercial "sport"-related bodybuilding, not proper weight training! I've trained religiously for the past 40 years. Proper fitness is for life, and for longevity. "Commercial Supplement Driven Bodybuilding" as practiced by most people- is an odd offshoot of strength training and is absolutely not associated with longterm health & fitness.

      Chris Califano Hi Chris, to add to your comment; I have done a ton of energy work and have found that bodybuilding shuts down the natural energy flow of the body pretty severely. One reason could be due to all the right angles and straight lines of force generation as seen with machines and some barbell exercises. Calisthenics on the other hand or more organic forms of strength training like sprinting up mountain trails etc. don't impact the energy channels as much and in some cases are conducive to opening the meridians such as the Horse Stance, pushups etc.

    Hey Andrew,
    to build muscle mass you need to have good HORMONAL balance. If you were suffering from a disease before, it means your body had high levels of cortisol, which kills optimal T levels. When you found your health and ate the basic building blocks that your body needs ( it doesn't necessarily need to be a caloric surplus ), you build muscle with a good resistance training.

      Ryan Harlow well, thats false they do. a bigger muscle is always a stronger muscle, you cant compare between to individuals of course but the same muscle in a person is always stronger of you aquire some gainz. does not mean that a relative small muscle cant be a strong muscle though but that muscle would always be even stronger if its a bit bigger ;)

    I think you're giving too much credit to the "general population" in regards to strength and health vs bodybuilding (looks). The sad truth is most people only really care about being able to show off their bodies (big muscles, 6 pack abs etc). This is continually reinforced through movies and the like. I'd say most people have their priorities reversed due to this heavy influence. Sadly, skimming through the comments further proves my point.

    Thanks for another great video Andrew. A few years ago, I was a body builder eating a lot of protein. They say females won't get bulky, but I did and I didn't feel very well either. My health was in trouble, so I gave up so much protein and started eating a plant base diet. My cravings get the best of me, so I am back and forth from SAD to RAW. Therefore, my weight is up and down. Now, I'm a raw vegan again and I hope this time I can stick with it. I am also a runner and practice Bikram Yoga. I have eaten mostly junk vegan food for past few years not knowing it was junk and i don't feel good eating it anymore after fasting. Literally makes me sick.
    I can do 130 consecutive pushups and run a mile in under 5 min 30 seconds.
    I weigh 140
    I can bench 185
    Squat 300
    Deadlift 310
    But... i look skiny
    My influence is minimal because of my skininess.
    My goal is to bench 300
    Squat 450 deadlift 500
    And weigh at least 185 mostly muscle. I feel i could confidently wear a shirt that says this is what a fruitarian looks like at the gym at that point.

    I am a "high" protein skeptic and I'd like to believe "low" protein is optimal for muscle building, but a couple things here..re: your barbell gains- they appear to be over a relatively short period and perhaps are what is referred to as "newbie gains", more to do with the body's ability to recruit muscle fibers to adapt vs. actual muscle growth providing the added strength. Were you sore after starting back up with heavy barbell lifts? I'm assuming what you refer to as your quicker recovery vs. peers is that perhaps they are trying out your activity and they're sore due simply to the activity being "new" when DOMS (delayed onset muscle soreness) tends to come into play.

  • @ajohnson40aj
    @ajohnson40aj 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I have been researching many things as I've had a multitude of health issues off and on in my life. I find these debates very interesting. When I was younger, during times when I was leaner and stronger, I ate lots more fruit and veggies (not all raw) but over and over again, when I've restricted calories (yo-yo dieting), I've gained weight. It has always baffled me why I actually lose weight taking in more calories from healthy food. Of course, this doesn't work with junk food only nourishing, life-giving food. This time I've been consistently losing since 2011, but still have a long way to go. The thing is, my son, who is very lean genetically (took after his dad) is and always has been INCREDIBLY STRONG - way more than average. For years, people who thought he was too skinny to be strong were actually SHOCKED by his natural strength. All I'm saying is that the appearance of huge muscle mass is not the only indication of strength and fitness - you simply cannot tell how truly strong a person is by looking at him. So while Andrew may not have tricked out muscle mass, to say he isn't strong or that he is puny seems inaccurate and unnecessary. Because even if you can lift a woman overhead for a few moments, do you have the core strength and flexibility he demonstrated to do the acrobatic moves without dropping the lady???!!! There is something to be said for having agility, flexibility, speed as well as strength. Besides, every person's health and fitness goals are different. If a person has no interest in dead lifting 500 pounds for bodybuilding competitions, then using the weight lifting standards to gauge health and fitness are meaningless. I'm looking for optimal health to conquer the issues in my own body and it has become apparent to me from my reading and other research that one eating plan does NOT fit everybody's personal situation. For me and the issues I must overcome, a low-protein vegan diet is starting to sound more and more like the way I should go - at least initially. That's the beauty of life, we are allowed to make adjustments along the way to meet our bodies' nutritional needs at any given time. So relax, be kind and live well. Peace!!!

    Hey man, props for finding a diet that you can stick to and make some gains, but just be cautious about your perceived authority on the topic at the stage you're at. Like some commenters said (much more flippantly) below, your raw strength numbers are actually still really low if you want to be compared to guys who train fairly regularly and eat a balance diet. The biggest mistake you can make is comparing your fitness to regular people. Most people are borderline-disabled.

    I really don`t care for the constant arguing from individuals about which diet is the best. I have my preference , that may change in time but to each their own. Personally I wouldn`t have made those strength gains posted as the crux of my argument for any diet. Any newbie on a powerlifting program with the shittiest of diets would make substantially greater gains. I`m not saying you`re weak cause the balance movements with that girl would suggest otherwise in terms of very strong stabilizer muscles. Either way good luck with your diet and lifts. Take care

  • @woodgrain816
    @woodgrain816 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    There's multiple ways to increase strength. There's myofibrillar hypertrophy (increasing the number of muscle fibers), sarcoplasmic hypertrophy (increasing the size of the muscle cells), and endurance training for muscle efficiency. More importantly is training the nervous system in a sense to become coordinated and output electricity to the muscle more efficiently. Many people get "newby gains" really fast from actually working their nervous system when they start lifting, but hit a plateau when they stop building muscle. You'll need to actually measure your arms, legs, body weight, body fat percentage, etc to determine if you're building muscle.
    The weakest link in many people's strength is probably their under-stimulated under-trained nervous system rather than muscle mass.
    You mentioned DOMS (delayed onset muscle soreness) as being a sign of not recovering, but it actually has more to do with training frequency. You probably train more frequent than your peers. Only train once a week and you'll be sore for a couple days.

    I got into this in the 70's because of health problems created by large doses of antibiotics taken over a long period. But over the years I became " programmed " by the low carb, high fat, sugar-is-bad for you ideas.
    I became bedridden. My digestion has been so bad I lost my ability to get decent sleep because of toxicity caused by indigestion. Watching these videos and experimenting with eating more fruit has caused me to begin to wonder if I've unnecessarily lost decades of my life. I do test for high levels of candida in the organic acids test, and I wake up hungry during the night needing to eat more fruit to get back to sleep. However I do feel much better in the morning and Im hoping my body will adapt. I'm going to forget I ever heard about candida , or how toxic sugar is. I've got a blood sugar meter and I've found that if I simply raise my heart rate by walking very fast uphill for just a couple of minutes it drops my blood sugar 20 points. Thanks!
    But REALLY?

    You are a threat to their way of thinking, their habits and beliefs.
    High-protein powders make a lot of money for some people. Their advertising has convinced many people. They're sold.
    Building maximum mass is a special project, and calls for special measures. Steroids and extra protein can help there. Hog farmers have worked out optimum protein levels for optimum gains.
    For me, I would rather be strong and slender or wirey. It makes more sense for many activities, including many athletic activities.
    And it even looks better. Both women and men look better when they aren't too massive. Women often say that the overly massive bodies are a turn-off, and most men say the same.

    I'm not gonna comment on the low protein based diet, as there is no reasearch showing its supremacy against high protein diet, but the philosophy nowadays according to bodybuilders is that they think only protein, every day they wake up. This has personally made me against high protein diets, because it's very exhausting to eat protein and to have to think about "getting your protein" every single day. I have done this for about 5 years now, and yes it is the new eating disorder, especially for young men, but for women too who are interested in bikini competitions. To have to compulsively think about calories, protein, carbs and fats all your life, just because you go the gym is ridicolous. All these nutrition coaches, who merchandise their products and their diet plans only amplify this phenomenon. Just my 2 cents.

      Henry Martikainen He didn't mention it there. However it was in the study on the screen about the people with kidney problems. We only need around 50% of 1 gram of protein(0.5g) per KG of bodyweight. So I'm about 60kg. I only need 30grams or so(a little more is always welcome) per day for maintenance and will even help for small gains :D About 0.65g per kg to 1g per kg is plenty for medium to larger gains. Just google around and you'll find all the information on it you need. High protein is deff. a new eating disorder haha. Cheers!

      Protien exist because the ones who believe in it does but, protien has many other names i.e ammonia, nitrogen, enzymes, bacteria, micro-organisms, minerals, alkali, acid, elements, germs, flora etc., it has many names but, look at the periodic chart and you will find them all some being for and others against health.

    Let’s say some 200 pound bro follows the recommendation and consumes 200 g of protein per day. Subtract 50 g for daily requirements, that leaves an excess of 150 g per day. Let’s say he does that for half a year, he will have consumed 27.375 kg of protein. That is 60 pounds. Does he really think he is going to gain 60 pounds of muscle? The guy with the best physique of any guy I know (complete with year round six pack abs) is a vegan who says he consumes maybe 100 g per day.

    Most of your 'strength gains' came from neural efficiency. If you want to get much stronger, you'd have to up your protein intake. If you pursued this diet for a few years you'd see your strength make very little if any improvements. Not necessarily to the levels often suggested by bodybuilders, but certainly more than what you suggest here.

      Cheers Bob. I am a 31 year old male who has been following Dr Morse and using his herbs for the last 5 years or so. I used to eat tons of meat and fast food and always considered myself in shape but it wasnt until I started abusing steroids after I got out of the army and other drugs that they almost killed me. Finding Dr Morse is the best thing that happened to me. I went from 240, after all the fasting and fruit eating losing up to pound and I half a day just to get my kidneys filtering, down to 140 lbs. Once I learned Iridology from his channel, it explains everything about my genetics. Im 205 now and mostly raw and work out about every other day. I drive a truck for a living now so my work outs tend to be push ups, sit ups, body squats, burpees and pull ups off my trailer. I still eat cooked because the energy is almost too much on all fruit! I get bored and am at the point where I wanna work out twice a day! Yeah man. Dr Morse is the bees knees. Once humanity gets on that level of knowledge and ditches all the protien and calories nonsense, and focuse on energy and physics with chemistry and learn what the lymphatic system is for we, will have athletes like never before.

      @chinstrapjoe 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Bob Ray There is no such thing as auto immune. Dr Morse explains this pretty easily. Have you looked at your eyes? He has many videos on iridology as well. Humans are a frugavorish species, also I only eat cooked as a balance but keep getting more and more raw, the way nature intended. Not because it is electrical or super beneficial but because of the lack of discipline.

    • @chinstrapjoe
      @chinstrapjoe 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Bob Ray If you can only eat bananas, you are probably going through some serious detox "healing criseses" on more juicy fruits. Unfortunately in North America, we dont have the ripest fruits, but you should try and find the sweetest juicyest fruit possible. I dont know what kind of health issues you are dealing with, but can assure you this is a lymphatic issue. Youre gonna want to get your kidneys filtering out this lymphatic waste and start PROMOTING, a cold, flu, or healing crises. until you see snowflake white sediment in your urine and you get all this mucus to drain down. You want to also work on your neuro- lymphatic points. This is is where the nervous system is tied into the lymph vessels which are your main sewer lines of the body. You can use blunt objects but a balled fist under your back will work, while you are laying on it. You wanna work on the kidneys especially to help move lymph. This is coming from a guy who was falling apart on the inside from all the drugs and acidosis. Hang in there bro. Keep watching Dr Morses vids and he'll lead you to the truth.

    All this proves is the body's ability to adapt to an initial training stimulus. Any one who tracks their progress through the first six months of a training program is going to notice improvement.(Mostly due to greater neuromuscular efficiency). Yes you've shown a bit of muscular hypertrophy from your teenage photo but those "newb" gains are attainable by any one starting a regimented program. Your evidence is anecdotal and proves very little other than the fact that beginner trainees can make small gains in hypertrophy in spite of a low protein intake.

    Your "gains" are well within the range of the "neuro-muscular" gains, which are merely due to the fact that your nervous system becomes more efficient at recruiting motor units. In other words you already had the muscle necessary to perform those lifts, but your synapses were still incomplete back then. Now the synapses are more complete, you probably synthesize a few ounces of muscle at most, so you lift more even though you have pretty much the same amount of muscle mass as before.
    If in a two-years follow up you will have reached some numbers out of the "noob gains" range then there will be a point in making a video about it. As of now, your experience doesn't really prove anything other than the nervous system works properly. Muscle-synthesis-wise, however, you didn't prove anything, and apparently you won't be proving anything since you are not interested in that type of change for your physique. Which is fine, but don't go around spreading misleading experiences.

    I'm not being a troll or a hater here but I don't understand the point here. Nobody says you can't get stronger on a low protein diet, you can get stronger on CNS adaptation and making the muscle you do have stronger, just because you got stronger that doesn't mean you gained any muscle. I mean no disrespect but your not exactly muscular, are you strong? possibly but as I said that doesn't require gaining size to achieve... eat the same diet and do hypertrophy training on your diet and do a video in a years time showing us your progress because I guarantee you it won't be significant in terms of any muscle gain.
    I'm not saying as a vegan you can't do it but eating 7% from protein won't.

    Andrew, you're probably the only raw vegan (I know you aren't anymore, but you did your time so I still consider you one!) that comes out with a completely rational and sane argument - besides John Rose, although sadly he's a Holocaust denier. Here's the thing though, I'm also passionate about bodybuilding. So what have I done? I've taken some of your advice and some of my own knowledge from years of research on bodybuilding and muscle gain, and I'm going to go for it on a raw vegan diet! I just created my meal plan. Around 3kcal, 123g fat, 404g carbs, and 125g protein which is plenty for building optimal muscle. Smoothie bowls, green juice, huge salads, raw peanut butter, tahini, avocado, raw and healthy protein smoothies... I'm excited to see how this experiment goes. If you see this comment, wish me luck! Hope you're doing well!

  • @LifestylebyChintan
    @LifestylebyChintan 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

    We really don't need protein because body makes its own protein, then why to feed externally. The road to bodybuilding goes through strength reps between 1-5 . A 6-8 rep range is for bulking. Without being able to lift a weight properly, how can one perform reps ? The strength is in tendons and ligaments. The strength in tendons comes from vitamin c sources like guava, drumstick, citrous fruits, Indian gooseberry etc. with the help of vitamin c, body synthesies the collagen in the tendons and ligaments. It takes time to grow stronger. It will take 3 years time to get good physic. And the routine is surprisingly simple. Just perform 1-6 reps of one set. Yes, one set with easy reps, that' it. No warm up. All 6 Reps should be easy. When a set feel too easy, add 1 pound plate and so on. After performing a set, it should feel like you have done nothing. This takes hardly 5-10 minutes with alternate day. It's okay if you had skip it for 2-3 days gap. And follow your regular diet. Just one change is last dinner should be at 6.30 pm and go to bed at 9pm and watch your gains. If you perform 6-8 reps , muscle bulk will be there but it won't last a week. This is temporary gain for show off because actual strength is not reached yet. Include natural vitamin c sources in your routine.

    He says he didn't do any weight training before and focused on other aspects on fitness, fair enough. So when he starts lifting weights, he starts to get stronger, what a surprise. Protein or not that would happen. But putting on proper muscle you need 1-1.5g of protein per pound of bodyweight. Hence he hasn't put anything on and is still small.

  • @AwareLife
    @AwareLife 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I agree. Thank you Andrew. It obviously doesn't effect your strength and fitness. "Proteinaholic" by Garth Davis is a fine book on the subject. Looking at WHO research minimal required protein can be in 5% of energy intake range but is upped to include those needing more sometimes. Then SAD diet adds more as "sfae recommendation" and it is way beyond what is necessary. It is resistance training that preserves and keeps muscle and body fit.
