A bit sad nobody seems to 'get' why Asgore destroys the mercy option...
You've been literally told that a human soul alone is not enough to escape, you need a human and a monster soul. That means that you MUST kill Asgore at least to be able to get out yourself.
Asgore can't let you go either, he needs your soul to remove the barrier once and for all.
He also feels that he doesn't deserve mercy from anyone for what he's done.
It's not a bad-ass move... It's actually pretty sad.
That actually makes sense
It wasn't so much that Mercy isn't an option that freaks them out. It was the fact Asgore visually broke the 4th wall and destroyed the Mercy option, which caught most of us by surprise.

@CyberMatt16 What Toriel meant by collecting six SOULS from the surface wasn't about killing humans. It was about collecting the lingering SOULS of already dead humans. Peacefully. Probably by asking the dead for their help.
@CyberMatt16 But it is pretty heavily implied when Toriel chastises Asgore right before you meet up with Asriel.
The sad thing is nobody realizes his pain.
He destroyed it because he didn't think he deserved forgiveness. He can't even bear to look at you. Also, Bergentruckung basically is a hero who is 'dormant' but in the darkest hour, he awakens to save the day. That's Asgore's theme name, as many know, and he's not that. He's a guy with a terrible burden and a choice to make.
Also, even his name is fleshed out. Asgore is an anagram of the Latin word "Aegros," which could mean "reluctant" or "anxious"
and "Dreemurr," sounds like "dreamer" but its an anagram of "Murderer," so he's a "Reluctant Murderer,"
He cannot even look at the player when he's fighting...

I like how you can tell they’re playing up the shock and awe at the beginning and then are just fully shocked when asgore destroys the button
I think my favorite thing about the Asgore fight is seeing people who have obviously gotten through the whole game by taking the mercy route get here, and when they finally realize that there can be no peaceful resolution to this fight and that the only way to survive is to attack, seeing them hit the fight button for the first time and fumble it because they don't know what they're doing. It's a perfect synchronization of the player's and character's experience.

This is no mercy for him... After all the atrocities he's committed towards the human race, he believes he doesn't deserve to live. This is also why he doesn't attack you in the Genocide run, seeing a monster in you that he can relate to. It's sad, really.

I didn't even realize till I played his boss fight a second time, but you can hear the sound effect from when your soul shatters when he destroys the mercy button. It could be interpreted a lot of ways but I imagine it's the sound of his own heart breaking before he's even defeated.

If you are paralyzed and you have no limbs you would think that frisk wouldn’t be able to do anything so that’s how he would remove their options

@@rustyjones7908 he destroyed your option of mercy and later you're able to do it. He knows the mechanics of the game he knows you can't do something that isn't given as an option so it must be him who gives the choice back to you.

In every fight (except of the Sans fight) you make the first move which means that the humans attacked him first (also the humans had to kill him to get out and we know they wanted to get out otherwise they would've stayed in the RUINS). So yeah his killings and declaration of war all count as self defense thus he hasn't done anything wrong.

@@presentmicsoul cry and jack both for me. They get so honestly into things but take it in different directions, cry more subtle and deep and jack getting hype when you know that's what the dev is hoping for. a lot of others I feel are too hammy. Ofc I take games too seriously myself so.

Chibipie Kagane bruh, you can Act through the battle. That’s how you do the pacifist run lol. You jus have to keep acting, until you glue the mercy button back together at the end
I kinda hate that, y'know ? These games are ment to have us making the choices WE would make (in our first run), not just chose to spare everyone because you got told beforehand that it would give you the happy ending

When you fight Asgore you *ha e* to fight him until he surrenders, there's no way around it
it's been 4 years since i beat asgore and i still think that this scene is really badass
i love this detail of asgore's fight, that the first thing he does is to remove mercy from the table
This is what we all loved about Undertale, we never expected Asgore to destroy that mercy option. The game's too smart and seriously unpredictable. This game is a fucking legend.

Tbf if you paid attention then you knew that mercy wouldnt have been an option to begin with, but him physically destroying the option, crushing any miniscule thought of the slightest chance you could is still the coolest thing ever.
