Hilda, Pat Coombs, Peggy Mont, Rita Webb, Hattie Jaques, Thora Hurd. All learned their craft in provincial theatres making the transition to TV in the 60s. These wonderful ladies kept us entertained during the 60s and 70s a few made it to the early 80s. Sadly they have almost been forgotten. Great to see these wonderful clips on YT keeping their flame burning.
Today Gina Lollobrigida passed away. I can't think of any finer tribute than having your name put through the mangle by the wonderful Hylda Baker. R.I.P. Gina, and Hylda.
You can see where Victoria Wood got her 'I'm looking for my friend Kimberly, have you seen her?' from watching this. Thanks for uploading, I've wanted to see this for a long time.
The beginning of this reminds me of Victoria Woods Kimberley sketch "I'm looking for my friend, Kimberly, have you seen her?" Hilda Baker is the Goddess of comedy. Amazing soul inside that body.
its so sad it seems when she was in the nursing home , no one bothered about her cause she had made some enemies also she had dementia. so sad...what a great talent..DEMENTIA is a curse. more and more people are getting it and it destroys the person and the family , caregivers lives.
I am not British but whom today will fit her calibre of acting standards and professionalism. My Father used to say comedy is the toughest medium in show biz. It's true
I love Hylda Baker. If anything underestimated. She was highly professional and had a reputation of being a little difficult. But she was unique and extremely talented.❤
what catch phrase's she left behind for us to remember her She knows you know Have you been Walter I must get a small hand on this watch plus many more Thanks Hildaxx
I agree with the comments below. Her style came straight from reality. The North had thousands of these Mrs Malaprops. The closer to reality, the funnier it seems,, as everyone could recognize the performance in reality, and the reality in performance.
A friend of ours auditioned(successfully) to be her last Cynthia(Matthew Kelly played her once in The Good Old Days, but that doesn't really count),he was very tall and well built. She had a read through of her stage act,and watched him carefully. He got the job on the spot, why? because he didn't laugh once (He actually didn't find her funny)He appeared with her over a long period and never corpsed once. I believe her first Cynthia was her husband.
Hilda Baker was great. A trailblazer. She opened the door for so many female comics. Unfortunately she got dementia and her "friends" and colleagues didn't realise it. I saw her live in Blackpool several times. RIP Ms Baker. Victoria Wood copied her: I'm looking for me friend. Have you seen her? She's tall....etc etc
@@walverden1 My late Grandfather played opposite her, also. Eric Wainwright, whom you can read about here: www.gentlemenranters.com/3.html#Eric . "Whooooo are you goiiiiing to beeee, tonight, Mathew...?" Matthew Kelly's stint as Cynthia there, I think. Lucky man to have worked onstage with the glorious Hylda B; not so lucky to have worked FOR the star Hylda B, but probably worth it.
My morher was a hotel chambermaid in the 60s and met lots of lovely stars but sadly Hilda Baker wasn't one of them, rather stuck up an demanding, but a good comedienne all the same
starlight76able Thank you for your view, sorry to hear that you thought the sound and the picture was poor, but if you have head phones it would help the audio greatly.

@@vaslav030547 Thank you Harvey for tuning in to my channel, Hilda was in her day one of the funnest comics around, but i appreciate now it comes across as old and stale .🇬🇧👍

jessie james As you say Dementia will take no prisoners it is a horrible condition.
Dennis Jennings it takes many prisoners: no survivors. It's a life sentence fr the duration of the afflicted' life. But I understand what you said👍

I met her when I did a paper round she was a absolute delight although she had a very upper class accent
Apparently she was a right cow. When she died, only six people turned up at her funeral. One was her cousin who went just to make sure she was deid.
Thank you Alfred,i did,ent know this about Hilda Baker, lol

Thank you Harvey yes I have heard something like that.

who is the guy dressed up as the woman?
