- Hey mechwarriors! Just a quick video here on mocing in formation and using what's called a "Hammer and Anvil" tactic in Battletech! In this video I discuss using slower battleline mechs paired up with fast flankers and how to use them most effectively! Enjoy!
Thanks for watching. Please like and subscribe!

Very informative training video.
@@ggamer2 thanks! Was a more basic one this time, but still effective! And can be applied to other games too.
Nice very helpful
@@nerdygunslinger5982 Thanks! Appreciated the feedback.
Great video as always!
Thanks!
Great one. I feel like my best vids where I make smart points like you do here usually get less views, hopefully that won't happen to you with this one 😂
@@TrailblazerBT lol just checked the analytics, it's trending to be about the same as the last one about BV exploits. I got into a game called SOVL recently and it is all about formations, so it inspired this.
5:39 NEVER EVER do this people's , having an elevation higher than you in your back arc , something WILL get behind you and kick and they're going to roll on the punch location chart and the best you can hope for is they hit you in the arm otherwise it's the head or a rear torso ......... not good
@@mathewkelly9968 hahaha yes the AI is silly... I would never let that happen. Definitely haven't gambled on that to get better shots, nope not me! :P
I always take a fire base and maneuver element .......... Cappies it'll be stealth equipped ranged units and ArrowIV units covering Ravens and for my Sword of Light it'll be ranged long range C3 units with Jenners .......... my other forces are similar
@@mathewkelly9968 That is an entirely different kettle of fish lol. Taking LRM carriers and TAG units means you need to maneuver the fast units to the outside of the enemies' battleline formation so you can stay out of range while spotting/TAGing
Yes!! This is good stuff too.
@@pickledtezcat thanks :) the mech lab playlist has like 30 something vids now. Lots of good stuff there lol
EDIT: wow it's up to 50 videos. That is way more than I thought lol
I really don't understand the desire to get into physical combat range. if you are playing a one-shot game, then it really doesn't matter. but when playing a campaign or short series with damage carrying over to the next mission, physical combat range is typically destruction of both mechs.
if I'm closer than medium range, tactically, I've made a mistake.
@@bruced648 This is kind of true. The thing is, the opfor isn't about to just let you run away forever lol. They *will* get on top of you. And in tournaments, brawling in melee is pretty much inevitable unless you have all super fast jumpers.
Finally, if you can manage to get melee hits without getting hit back by getting side or rear arcs, it's amazing. That is why stuff like the Ostscout is amazing for its BV. It is super fast. Just jump.behind people and kick them.
@TheManyVoicesVA since I play narrative campaigns and not tournament play, it's not a tactic I'll employ.
I also don't use BV or any other game balancing mechanism. that's simply not true to tactical warfare.
It depends though on which force has the comparative advantage at which range. If it's an all Hunchback lance vs all Warhammers, the HBKs will lose unless they get into physical range.
Obviously that's an extreme case but in most games one player will eventually realize they're unlikely to win at medium range and push to close in. In a narrative game you could retreat instead but that won't always be a good option.
@@TrailblazerBT that wont always be an option, period. If the enemy is faster than you, you aint running away.
If the enemy has reinforcements they might deploy on a different edge, and cut you off. If one of your lance members is slow, you're leaving then behind if you retreat.
I think "I'll never use hammer and anvil tactics because I'll never have enemies on top of me," is really naive. Pirates *love* using fast mechs and the best tactic with fast mechs is get behind someone and kick the hell out of them.
@@bruced648 Let's get the pirate forces with 2 Griffin-1S, 2 spiders, and a lance of SRM toting helicopters and see what tune you sing :)
Does Megamek have a basic tutorial when you first power it up?
@@androssthered1157 yes it does, but it's a complex program it takes a bit to learn the ins and outs. I should probably take another whack at a basic tutorial since my old one isnt well edited
when 3/5/0 assault mech got to that (light/heavy) woods on the middle of the map, should it stay there if it has good los and range? or keep moving?
@@NotMyGoogleID stay there 100%. And if the Locust is giving it trouble the Griffin might wanna turn around to help him lol.
As soon as it's in a decent sniping position the Awesome should just chill and support at medium range.
