It was a synagogue....he portrayed a cantor, which is one half, the singing and musical half, of a rabbi/cantor religious leadership duo in any Jewish congregation. The one portrayed happened to be a very conservative, almost Orthodox old school congregation, probably made up of a bunch of Eastern European Holocaust survivor immigrants and their first generation American born baby boomer children. It was about tradition meeting modern American life and the strains it placed on the relationships between old school deeply religious traditionalist parents and their more Americanized children, as much as it was about the father/son relationship, the father wanting certain things for and of the son and the son wanting something different for himself. Its actually Avery deep and nuanced film that tackles a bunch of issues all rolled into one. It's a classic that I believe has stood the test of time.

If the critics hate it I always give it a chance. This film touches the heart and I love it on so many levels. If you've seen it, you know what I mean. Only wish he had done more movies with his music 🎶 in it...

I can't believe this film was not well reviewed. It makes me kind of angry, because I may not have seen it as a child because of the reviews. It's truly fantastic. I would have to be super nit picky to find something, and Diamond is a better actor than most musicians turned actor by a huge margin. Arnaz and Olivier are incredible in their roles, so are the support guys in the band.

I was 12 years old in 1980. I had heard of this movie, but I hadn't seen it. I always liked Neil Diamond and I can remember as a kid, closing my eyes and imagining myself singing these songs to a pretty girl. I'm 56 now and I still close my eyes and imagine myself being so dynamic and charismatic that I wish I could do what he does. I heard the soundtrack to this movie for the first time in 1984. Immediately, I wanted to see the movie but it wasn't until years later, on VHS that I was able to see it. The movie blew me away. The music still moves me to this day. The world is a better place because of Neil Diamond and because of this movie. My two favorite song writers of this era is Dan Fogleberg, (God Rest Him) and Neil Diamond.

Surprised by critics comments. This film was a great movie in 1980 and still watchable today. Diamond acted well in his maiden role as good as many seasoned actors Olivier was great too as expected for the worlds finest actor. Good storyline and the part of Jesse was well thought out and interpreted by Diamond similar to his own life story of musical success. Diamond lasts forever

One of my favorite movies of all-time. I think the title may have hurt the interest in seeing the film by those who thought it was about a jazz singer. But when I heard the incredible "Love On The Rocks" on the radio, I knew different. The critics reaction to the same movie I found brilliant allowed me to discount the viewpoints of critics for the rest of my life. I would never read or listen to the viewpoint of a critic ever again.

Thank you so much for uploading this behind-the-scenes video.. I have loved Neil since I was 11 years old...my brother gave me this movie on a VHS tape. I still have it. Not only I got his CDs, tapes records, an LP but I have, also, seen him in concert several times. I met his wardrobe worker who invited me to a concert Neil gave in Fresno, Ca. We hang out with his band crew for many years. My friend also got me an 8x10 b&w, Neil's portrait. Neil Diamond has always had an amazing voice, feeling, and charisma to perform on stage. So unfortunate, he can no longer do that.

It’s so sad that the critics were merciless of Neil’s performance. I think that’s why he never made another movie. FYI, the soundtrack was nominated for a Grammy that year.

Actually he did appear in a cameo in the ultra silly teen comedy “Saving Silverman”. In that movie he plays himself. Jack Black and Jason Biggs play Neil Diamond fans who play in a band. Neil Diamond is in three scenes including the concert finale.

@@alleeclark3389 He was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease two years ago, there will be no more live performances like he used to do. He did a few concerts at some of the fire stations in California when there was the forest fires. I mean they weren't concerts, just a couple of songs, he did Sweet Caroline and one other tune for the group of firefighters that were taking a break. He cannot perform live like he used to anymore. Also he just turned 80. The man has had a magnificent career.

Neil Diamond was awesome in this film, he is a creative feeler. The critics were unreasonable in their panning. Sadly, the critics are all tied to Hollywood, whereas this had a great independent feel that other seasoned performers (Arnaz) supported and who also has a concrete background in theatre and film (and the industry) although she has been shadowed as "daughter to celebrities (Ball and Arnaz). Diamond certainly didn't need an additional star attached to his name as an "actor". He did it because it touched his heart (his personal story) and he put his best into this role. Hollywood sucks, today, they can't come with anything even remotely interesting. I won't pay to go to the cinema anymore. It's all crap.

Critics don't like anything that isn't loaded with violence and obscenity. This movie was too clean for them. If Jess had been portrayed as an F - bomb dropping drug addict, or if he had beaten Molly a few times, they would have called the movie brilliant.,and praised his performance. They also don't like Neil for the same reason, because his music also isn't loaded with obscenity. So they had their minds made up before any of them even went to see the movie. Fortunately for me, I like to form my own opinions, and I don't need a bunch of pompous, self-important jerks to do it for me. I LOVED this movie!

3:37 Neil Diamond was set to play Jim Jones in a musical biopic, "The People's Temple".
5:23 Neil's wearing a cowboy hat, playing an acoustic guitar in the cab of an 18-wheeler. Hundred miles down the road, the trucker says, "Tell ya hwut the problem in Amurica is...the Jews run the banks..." Oops.

Neil Diamond is a rock singer and not a jazz singer, he wrote the beautiful sound track for movie. Neil is the son of Russian and Polish Jewish immigrants, and grew up in Brooklyn, so that's the same. I think there is differences in the plot because it is set in 1980.
