- We were up early because we knew this was going to be a long day. But Houston… we had a problem. We were socked in with fog! After consulting the weather, though, the forecast called for the fog lifting about 9 am, so we slowly made our way out to the Gulf of Mexico. This is a short Gulf crossing compared to the other one we could do. Our plan is to make a few short crossings instead of tackling a 20 hour one. Even so, 73 miles is a long way. We have GPS, AIS and Radar on the boat that helps us navigate in some of the tougher conditions. Today we turned on all three. There is something eerie about boating in the fog...oftentimes you feel like you are going in circles. It helps to see the chart plotter pointing us in the right direction. We had to make this long run today because Traveller told us this was the only weather window we had until Wednesday, and they’d invited us to spend Thanksgiving with them and their family. We plodded along and only saw a few boats, but we saw tons of dolphins. It was super cool to run along side of them, and they even made a few jumps for us just off the bow! As we got closer to St. Marks, the fog did start to lift, and we had visibility the last hour or so of our trip. We anchored close to the marina we’ll go to on Friday, and called it an early night.
Being invited to dinner was such a blessing.
