A Leap of Faith Great Loop
United States
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 2 ส.ค. 2024
Ahoy all! We are Peter and Beth. We are embarking upon the journey of a lifetime aboard our boat "A Leap of Faith VI" in September. We plan to record our trip on the American Great Loop, a 6000+ mile counter clockwise circumnavigation of the eastern half of the United States. We will upload our trips as we go, so that you can see what we have seen. Sit back and enjoy the voyage!
Day 82 Anclote Key Anchorage to Tarpon Springs City Marina 10 miles 12 6 24
We had a good night. The boat rocked a little as the tides changed a couple of times overnight. The wind switched from SW to N overnight as well. Tarpon Springs is the Sponge Exchange in this area. There are tons of sponge boats. This area was settled by Greeks and their influence is everywhere. We had a gyro for lunch and actually it was the best one we have ever tasted! Our marina is on the sponge docks, so we are close to all the action. One thing to remember is our dockmaster today, Mick. As we were pulling in, he wanted us to make sure we called him as we came upon Marker 40. I did, and he preemtively told me what lines to have ready, and how we were going to be situated. We followed another big boat similar to ours up the river. Never thought anything about that. Until Mick called me back to tell us we are NOT on the south side of the river and that we were heading the wrong way! He was asking, “Can’t you see me waving my arms?” We did not have him in sight but things are quite busy in this river. Lots going on. He told us to turn around which we did. He was giving us bad information. He was looking at the boat ahead of us, and yelling at us to make sure THAT boat got to his marina. OMG. We told him he had the wrong boat and he denied it. Finally we had that mix up all taken care of and we got ourselves docked. Mick told us that tonight there is a Christmas celebration in town. They have “There’s snow place like Tarpon” tonight with a boat parade. We had lunch at a Greek restaurant who served up the best gyros we’ve ever had! Then tomorrow night there’s a golf cart parade. It’s been about 20 years since we’ve been to a parade. They had wonderful street food and pastries, as well. There were snow machines on a couple of the roofs and the kids were playing in the snow falling. I heard one little one say, “It’s raining snow!” Enjoy the photos.

Day 81 Twin Rivers Marina to Anclote Key Anchorage 58 miles 12 5 24
มุมมอง 3013 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
High tide was early today. We wanted to avoid all the worries of low water on our way out. At the radical low tide in the marina we were sitting in the mud. We set out at 7:00 am and we knew we had a long day ahead. It was a 6 hour day. Weather has turned and we had less than 1 footers out there in the gulf, we had plenty of water on the channel, and the crab pots weren’t as plentiful. Until we...

มุมมอง 7313 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
After three hours of sleep we discussed what we were going to do. We started out at 8:30 in the morning and decided as a team that we needed a marina to recover in. There are two on the Crystal River. Twin Rivers is a boat yard with no frills, and Pete’s Pier which is further up the channel. The word of a long trip up the “Channel” sent me into a tizzy but I called both. Twin Rivers charged $11...

This was a 7 hour day. We had 3 foot waves and we had many, many crab pots to contend with. In all of our materials they say to watch out for crab pots! This is a huge understatement. There are thousands of them on our way. These softball sized floats tell boaters where crab traps are underwater, but they float on the surface. They are many different colors but they are so hard to spot. That me...

Gracie discovers the dolphins
มุมมอง 88วันที่ผ่านมา
The dolphins are like boating crack! You can never get enough. Gracie happened to be on the bow as one breached and then a couple started riding our bow wake. Take a look as she discovers them. You'll see her tail wag as they are playing in the wake.
Day 74 Apalachicola, FL to St Marks, FL 73 1 miles 11 27 24

We were up early because we knew this was going to be a long day. But Houston… we had a problem. We were socked in with fog! After consulting the weather, though, the forecast called for the fog lifting about 9 am, so we slowly made our way out to the Gulf of Mexico. This is a short Gulf crossing compared to the other one we could do. Our plan is to make a few short crossings instead of tacklin...

Woke up and started by cleaning up all the sand gnats (otherwise known as no-see-ums) out of the bridge. When we anchor we have an anchor light that we turn on to warn other boaters that we are here. Of course it attracts bugs! They were all over the cockpit of the boat. UGH! We started the genny so we could have coffee, and then allowed some of our electronics to charge. Finally at 9 or so we ...
Day 72 East Bay Anchorage to Oxbow Anchorage 36 6 miles 11 25 24
มุมมอง 24วันที่ผ่านมา
We travelled through a “cut” today to continue east. Much of it is straight until it’s not! We wound our way through some pretty rural area. We were hoping to stay at a free dock in White City, however that is no longer the case. Took Gracie to shore so she could go potty and then we headed out. We called the city office and were told that we couldn’t stay there, so we continued on to a beautif...

We spent our three days washing and cleaning the boat. It’s amazing how dirty things get while we are traveling. On Saturday night we walked across the bridge to a neat restaurant in Panama City. It was Billy’s Oyster Bar. We had a seafood meal that gave us two more meals of leftovers! We love the fresh seafood down here. We even went next door and bought some fresh jumbo shrimp, and they steam...

We didn’t intend for this leg to be so long. We still have the wind to contend with! We woke up to the sound of waves against the hull at about 4 am. Even though we still had north wind the waves were coming from the west and shaking us like a washing machine. Finally around 8 we decided to hit the road, so to speak. We had a 3 ½ hour leg planned to an anchorage in the next bay. The east end of...

Wind and more wind! We had our share of it. Overnight our sunpad blew off. We were sure that we had lost it for good. Peter considered the direction of the wind and then the way the storms blew in and turned himself around. Our sunpad had blown up on the beach. We rinsed it down as best we could and hung it from the rail. Soaked like that it weighs over 100 lbs, but between the two of us we wer...

We knew we had some rain bearing down on us and we needed a safe place to stay while we had 30 mph winds. (I was told by some locals, "Honey that ain't a storm, that's just rain." But 3-5 inches of rain sounded like a lot to us. Peter was scouring our software on Navionics and happened to find a place called Juana's Pagodas that had some dockage. The docks are owned by Kevin and his brother and...

If I make a video about being out in the ocean, in the middle of no where it’s gonna scare ppl
We are documenting a year long journey. Sometimes it is scary!
Happy Thanksgiving to both of you looks great even in the fog.
Being invited to dinner was such a blessing.
That's so cool!
I didn't comment last time what is Sony to see Gracie wagging her tail at 😊her new friends. It has to be a little scary to be boating in the fog love you, Mom
It is a little scary to go in the fog. Way more comfortable than our alternative. Four foot waves!
What happened to the Looper flag that was on the front of the boat?
Wish I would have seen it go! The winds took it while we were fighting the waves. We'll pick one up next weekend at St. Marks FL where our next marina is.
I'd be getting sea sick for sure! Stay safe you guys!
Thanks Faith. We are fortuanate to not have that motion sickness! Neither one of us. In fact, we crossed Lake Michigan in 2020 in 10 footers. Our oldest was seasick, but neither one of us.
Love it! Looks nice from snowy Wisconsin!
We heard about the snow. We're in a cold snap down here, too. High of 66 today and lows in the 50's! :-)
I love the idea of the wild life 😁
Hey there! How's your/our boat running:-) ?
Danny, It;s doing great! Loving it! Dolphins this morning in the cove we are in!
Hope you are doing well… show us Gracie
We are good! We will get more Gracie up. She is camera shy!
I did find out what the White cliffs are made of chalk from microbes of shells thousands of years ago how interesting😊
Wow, even being docked looks cool!
With all that being said, it still sounds better than a day at work lol. Safe travels, will definitely be watching your progress! I saw Ahren and Michelle yesterday and they told me about the channel, glad I found it!
Thanks for subscribing! Glad you joined us!
Has Gracie ever fallen off the boat?
The only time she did was on the Milwaukee River. She was on the bow of our bowrider in front of the Rock Bottom Brewpub. Pete beeped the horn to salute the people having lunch there, and scared the dog so much that she lost her footing and fell into the river. The collective gasp from everyone was audible and so the the cheer when Peter was able to recover her from the water!!
Jenny says "She's happy you are having a good time." And "As we ceossed the Mississippi we were thinking about you. 🤗⛵
Thank you so much Jenny and Steve!
Looks like a beautiful lake
It is! Lots of activity on it as well!
He learned from the best!
We enjoying your video updates! Thanks for posting.
We were in Southern Missouri but very far from you guys. Thought about meeting up, but had to get back. Loving your videos. Take care. 🤗⛵
How beautiful
I am so tickled to see the waterfall from the water it looks good and sounds fantastic from the water enjoy
Too bad it’s that cold in the morning. Take care ❤
Do these marinas have laundry facilities? Wondering where you do your laundry?
Yes. All of the marinas we have been to have laundry rooms.
So what do those houses do for water and sewer?
No idea. We didn't ask.
Glad to see you guys doing well. Ed & Danyal
I can't believe it's been 25 days already!
Hard to believe it on this end too! We have been blessed with warmer than usual temps and cool nights! Today is actually exactly 4 weeks! (It's Sunday, my videos have a lag.)
Very interesting and good to see I couldn't hear all the banter but I can imagine it I assume that you're going to another place to enjoy some of the scenery and take some time love you, Mom and Dad we have returned from Door county😊❤😮
Strong current I see
Yes and it gets stronger
I’m praying for your safety. Where are you guys right now?
We are on the Kentucky Lake. We are not close to Florida so we are fine. Pray for the safety of those in the path of Milton!
I'm wondering if you're kind of following with or behind the boat that's ahead of you in the movie it looks like they're keeping your eye on them❤ you know I love maps so I'm keeping track of where you are it's fun trying to find you on my Eastern United States map love you, Mom
We have been travelling together with Traveller and Blessings Flow. Others have joined us and others have moved beyond us.
Must be nice to sit out and have a few drinks while the boat coasts along! Looks fun. Do you have to stay behind the wheel most the time or is there something like a cruise control?
We have autopilot however you can't just leave and take a nap. Someone should be there all the time in case diversion tactics are needed. The drinking doesn't happen underway! No need to press our luck. 😉
Love seeing Beth on the lines! We want to see more of you Pete!!
That means I would have to drive. Don't do those tight places, yet!
soooo proud of you and I love your NICKEL Tours!!
What do you use for internet?
We have T-Mobile to go. It only works with good cell coverage though.
Looks like a great place! Glad you got undercover for a couple of days.
❤
😊
Wow! It's Surely is wider make sure you check to make sure where it is going. It sounds like a beast😮. It may come near you who knows?😮 Hoping you had a good trip today. Love you always 😘
We had a very good trip today. Tomorrow hunkering down for the rain and wind. We'll be off Saturday to an achorage that's not much farther than Hoppie's. We found out tonight that Hoppie's only has room for 8 boats. It's a destination that we don't need to hit. With the rain we'll get a boost in the current which will help us with fuel use. In this Marina now there are 41 looping boats. Met a bunch tonight at the "Docktail" party before dinner. Will call you tomorrow.
Keep the "Faith" Pete. We're all pulling for you. Remember, they call it Pleasure Boating for a reason. If it isn't pleasurable, don't drop lines and go boating. Just find a nice spot to hang out for a few days and know you are having way more fun than I am at my desk following you:)
Danny thank you so much! Really appreciate your support. We are having fun!
Hi guys!!! Our kids live in Tampa and were evacuated from their place so they went to Miami. Are you staying put for a bit I’m assuming….
Tomorrow's winds are going to kick up some weather, We are hunkered down in Alton, IL on the Mississippi for tonight and tomorrow. Hopefully Hoppie's on Saturday, but he doesn't have any openings yet. We may have to make nearly 100 miles then on Saturday. Cross your fingers.
Is the hurricane going to affect your trip at all?
Gonna get some wind and rain tomorrow. We are hunkered down in Alton IL on the Mississippi.
I love it
