The best thing I remember from the "dial up days" is that once a week the company AOL would mail everyone in America a free, shiny miniature Frisbee. They wouldn't fly very well, but were still fun to toss around.
I got pretty good guessing the connection speed by the sounds in the last half of the handshake. I'd hear the slow-speed pattern and just cancel and try another server.
Telecommunication Engineers indeed pulled a lot of wizardry back in the days of analog phone lines. And all wizardry, even to today, stands upon the works of Claude Shannon.
Wi-Fi looks like this: Access Point: Hey, my network name is this, I support this stuff, you can connect to me (about 10 times per second) Phone: Hey My Network, even though we're not using WEP anymore, am I like, authentic, in your opinion? Access Point: Yes even though this is totally a holdover from WEP, you are totally authentic. Phone: Cool. Here's what I'm capable of doing technically... can I associate with you? Access Point: Yeah, we're compatible, so you can associate me with me!
I did notice that your modem sounds seemed to drag on a bit longer in the handshake than I remember. I used one of the late 56ks though. I'm not entirely sure if I remember the sound accurately though. I could be remembering the one shared most often on the net?
After listening to a lot of different ones ranging from 9600 to 56K I noticed they're all much longer than I remember. You might be misremembering, after all, memory isn't 100% reliable -- exactly how reliable is it? Don't remember.
I'm 24 and when I was a kid my grandma had dial up. I remember that annoying noise and how long it took for things to load. I remember my grandma would tell us to stay off the Internet if she was expecting a call because you couldn't be on the Internet and the phone at the same time.
Dial Tone: 350 Hz (continuous) Carrier Tone: 1000 Hz (continuous) Handshake Tones: Outgoing Data (Modem Transmitting): 1500 Hz for '0' bit 2100 Hz for '1' bit Incoming Data (Modem Receiving): 300 Hz for '0' bit 1100 Hz for '1' bit
Yes I do remember those sounds, but they don't trigger nostalgia, they trigger frustration. Frustration from so much time lost from something being 95% downloaded and then someone picking up the phone and losing internet connection. AARGH!!!
Dude, you're funny! As a side-note... the online content and UX/UI methodologies--that everyone currently takes for granted--had its origins during the 56k/128k dial-up era... a time when rebels and outcasts were tasked with created engaging experiences, while working within the brutal limitations of data compression... a time when the idea of "best practices" was non-existent and rules were meant to be broken... ah, the good 'ol days. Our new generation of developers have no idea how easy they have it. But I digress... hoping that your solo move works out!
Oh man. It’s like bloatware! It used to matter how much physical memory your program occupied, but with memory being so cheap we’ve basically created memory-guzzling SUVs instead of lean economy programs.
Do you do any sound mastering for your vocals? I dont think that you do, maybe you could start. just use some preset for mix and mastering, that will make your vids so much more profesional :D

What is that sound from.
Great video Trace! Please do more on the evolution of technology!
Double comments = double thank yous!
It's not nostalgia that I feel when hearing that, with the number of times of getting disconnected when downloading stuff...
Love this! Thanks! Why are we not using our eyes, ears and nervous system as an interface. The keyboard is way to slow for i/o.

Carrier Tone: 1000 Hz (continuous)

Oooh i love this comment and thank you for the super thanks!
The end part would sometimes go on for ages and fail to connect
Or the dial up sound for the tones of the number would happen and no handshake
Would you ever consider doing your own podcast? TH-cam is great and all, but I looove me some podcasts

That dial up analogy is one of the most hilarious things I've seen in a while. At the same time it was easy to understand..

I was really hoping the wifi was going to be basically spinning around having little bursts of conversation fragments with multiple people 😁
What!? I was wondering why dial up made that noise just yesterday! Very odd, but super cool to have that answered.
My pleasure!!! It was such a weird itch in my brain. It feels so good to have that out of there.
Do you do any sound mastering for your vocals? I dont think that you do, maybe you could start. just use some preset for mix and mastering, that will make your vids so much more profesional :D
I don’t do anything like that! Do you have a video that I could watch to learn more???
I think you can do that with adobe soundbooth, but personally I get the sound from mic -> open Pro Tools 12 -> apply EQ, Compressor and harmnics as well as Reverb -> export, then I''m good to go - sound is crisp and clear. I load it up back to premire pro and work with it. Unforunately this is an extra step you gotta do to have profesional sound, but it's damn worth it. If you dont know how to EQ and Compress, you can just buy a template for 30bucks. also: 065 108 115 111 032 121 111 117 032 099 097 110 032 103 101 116 032 099 114 097 099 107 101 100 032 118 101 114 115 105 111 110 032 111 110 108 105 110 101 044 032 106 117 115 116 032 100 111 110 116 032 100 111 119 110 108 111 097 100 032 102 114 111 109 032 107 105 099 107 097 115 115 032 116 111 114 114 101 110 116 115 032 111 114 032 116 104 101 112 105 114 097 116 101 098 097 121 044 032 099 117 115 032 085 083 065 032 116 114 097 099 107 115 032 116 104 101 109 046 032 072 111 119 101 118 101 114 032 073 032 099 097 110 032 117 112 108 111 097 100 032 105 116 032 111 110 032 103 111 111 103 108 101 032 100 114 105 118 101 032 119 047 032 112 097 115 115 119 111 114 100 032 040 112 114 111 032 116 111 111 108 115 032 049 050 032 097 110 100 032 112 108 117 103 105 110 032 098 117 110 100 108 101 041 032 105 116 032 119 105 108 108 032 103 101 116 032 121 111 117 032 103 111 105 110 103 046 032
