**Whoops I completely forgot to mention their greens! The reason greens isn't really mentioned in their food expenses is because most of it is forage I get for free, from parents veggie garden or I share some from my own food so I don't bother adding it to their food bill. Sorry if that kinda skews the data** Do you know how much you've spent on your own rabbits? 😭
We have 3 buns... Paid for all to be spayed and neutered, multiple carriers, x-pens for bonding, gates for areas to keep them separate until bonded.. LOTS of hay, litter here is very expensive.. I have spent thousands already and it has not even been a year! haha ugh
Seems like we're lucky. We haven't had any health problems in the 2 or so years we've had our two buns (both adopted, one we got spayed and the other one was already neutered, only paid I guess 100 euros for one and the other fella was free) and we have enough space to buy 8kg hay bales (16+ lbs) and the similar with their wooden litter pellets (15kg) and food pellets (10kg). Much of the year we bring them greens from outside and our apple tree cuttings provide enough hard stuff for their teeth to chew on. Cardboard boxes are the best single plaything and they don't cost anything. The veggies they get from the store don't cost much. Random play-things and bunny forts I like to make myself out of stuff that didn't cost anything (they have their own room though they're free roaming 24/7, benefits of not having kids yet). So it's about 1 euro per day or about 340 euros per year. But apparently your mileage may vary, quite a lot it seems.
My bunnies love doing home renovations. I give them the cardboard box their supplies comes in with one side open and they chew their own holes/tunnels through it over the course of a few months. By the time it's completely destroyed, the next supply box arrives and I repeat the process. It's a free way to keep them entertained!
Pets are very expensive overall. I'm very lucky that neither my cat nor my rabbit have wracked up any vet bills. (Though I'm dreading it, lol.) I usually spend around $130 a month on cat and rabbit food, cat litter, greens, and 10lbs of hay that lasts me the month. I rarely have to buy rabbit litter or pellets since I buy in bulk. A little more if I add in the occasional new toy. I'm super poor but I try and get them the healthiest brands, or it could be lower. XD
If they are available in your country, vaccines for Myxomatosis, RHDV1 and RHDV2. In Australia, we only have the one for RHDV1 called the Cylap vaccine. kb.rspca.org.au/knowledge-base/what-is-rabbit-calicivirus-and-how-do-i-protect-my-rabbit-from-rabbit-haemorrhagic-disease/#:~:text=Rabbit%20owners%20should%20ensure%20their,rabbits%20being%20exposed%20to%20RHDV.
Wow! This is super helpful. I got two rabbits-- one for free and the other for $10. I'm getting them spayed soon but a wellness check first, but that's what I'm nervous about financially are the vet fees.
If you haven't had them long, it may be worth researching to see if there's an rabbit pet insurance available where you live? A lot of things can easily become pre existing conditions so if you are going to do it, it's better sooner than later. Alternatively, you could put aside a bit of money easy week for their vet bills (this is what I do)
I thought living in Mexico and having a bunny was expensive, because they aren't common pets, and for good quality hay I buy it in the US and get it shipped to my house near the center of the country, or vet bills are more expensive that cats or dogs. But in the 3.5years of having bunnies I haven't spent even $1000 dollars (incluid spaying, stasis things etc). So now I consider my self and my situation lucky I guess.
@@BunsBestLife yikes, that definitely rises the price tag! Also I'm sure that if I lived in a place where I could buy hay by the bale (not just oat hay or alfalfa, that's what it's sold in my country) or different types of hay or treats just by going to the store, my bunnies would be much more spoiled, so in that sense you're really lucky!
hi! fellow sydney bun mum!! so glad i've just stumbled across your channel as i also own a beloved mini lop. thank you for breaking it down and being so open and real about the costs of being a bunny parent. would love to hear about particular recommendations that you would have for Sydney/Australian rabbit owners as buying their supplies can be a bit hit or miss at some places. i personally love 'blesstheircottontails' for some really great treats and toys can't wait to keep following what bunmi and turbo get up to!!
Oh my goodness...I would need a 2nd job! Thankfully my two have been healthy and haven't required any emergency care. *knock on wood. They both need spayed so that would jump the cost up. I would love to be able to bond them.
I have know clue how much I spend on my rabbits 😂there so spoiled I had a wooden floor in the room they are in so I changed it to vinyl with was a lot of money but worth it as there not fully litter trained and have accidents but ye i must start adding up thing to see how much I spend on them
Ik I’m pretty good about saying no to things I have 4 rabbits so I have to be cause we go through so much hay but last week I nearly rescued a pregnant rabbits from people who didn’t look after her properly but then I thought about all that food and hay and room so I told my breeder that I got my first rabbit from and she took her with I’m glad about
Yes rabbits are very expensive I some how have ended up with 4 but luckily for me vets in Ireland are that expensive but expensive than a cat or dog it was 80 euro for my rabbit to be neutered and I’m October I’m getting my two girls spayed as my vet is very busy and that’s when I got an appointment and my fourth is only two months old as her mam was rescued from a back yard breeder pregnant and I was on the waiting list for a baby rabbit when I was looking for my first rabbit and never said to take me off it 😂and I couldn’t resist her little face so ye

I haven't really thought about it, but now I want to know, so let me make a spreadsheet real quick 🤓

💜💜💜💜
Such a good video! I love how organized and thorough you were!
Turbo’s so cute when he was little
Thanks for being so honest about the cost of owning a bun.

yes mine love hiding in and renovating their boxes too. I wish I could show you their "castle"

Holy moly that's expensive 😳
Where did you get the last litter pan?
You're a brilliant record keeper! Great video, Sandy.
I love watching your videos! This video was very helpful as I just adopted two buns in the past year😊
Thank you Ashley and thank you for adopting! how are your little ones doing?
How did he fracture his jaw? Poor guy
What vaccines do bunnies need?

Why did you delete your bunny asmr video 🥺😫

I don’t even have bunnies but thank u for the video 💕 🐰
Thank you! You’ve inspired me to start a spreadsheet for my bunny who I’m getting on the 22nd🙏🏽 I think they’re so worth it

now I'm jealous haha. We've been unlucky that both stasis appointments have happened at night where we needed to pay extra for after hours care

Why don't you get insurance ???
couldn't find suitable pet insurance for rabbits in Australia

Hii!! thank you for that recommendation, I think I've seen that business mentioned in some of the Facebook groups I follow 🥰
Do you know any vets around inner sydney where they do really cheap spaying procedures for bunnies
How is Turbo?
Was wondering where do you source your hay from? I too am sick of those small bags!

there are so many things I've had to say no to buying that would have been so cute for them 1😭
