  • Washington Backcountry Discovery Route ( WABDR ) 2022 episode 2. Riding the Big Bikes on section 5 today down into Chelan. Another bear sighting, and some broken bones for good measure to round out the experience of dualsport riding in the backcountry. This series is about riding the route, not motocamping so it's more about the route itself than it is about camping.

I live in the Ozarks and love the riding here, but I wish I was closer to the riding you guys have up there. One day I'll plot a multi-day ride here in Arkansas, make a .gpx file and load it up and see where it takes me.
Love the comments on first aid (and the Cyberpunk stuff behind you) at the end!

Yours and Dork's videos have me itchin' to do the WABDR next summer. But hopefully on a smaller bike... those ruts were mean lookin'.Great content as always!

The ruts can be bad from the area North of Chelan, probably all the way to Ardenvoir. It's not long sections of ruts, but usually short sections of a hundred yards or so sometimes less. There's usually a path to get by them, but sometimes you have to cross a rut to find the best line. Careful riding is all it takes to make it through safely.
There tends to be a lot of people go out in vehicles too early on the season, which creates ruts, or rain runoff creates them.
I've ridden the area between Chelan and Cashmere a lot over the last 20+ years.
Usually the ruts are way worse heading down from French Corral (across Moe RIdge) into Ardenvoir. This year they were mostly non existent, which was not the norm. There's actually an easier route to get from French Corral down into Ardenvoir by just staying on the main road. I wish the BDR organization would add that as an easy option on the GPS tracks. I help layout a dual sport event in the area and have added that as an easy shortcut.

And we got a boatload more snow this winter so those ruts are only going to be worse😁

By the looks of the trail we passed through there around the same time. We started July 17 2022 North to South.

10:23 I rode through this exact spot towards the middle of October. I rode all the way out to Gold Creek Road (north) and then backtracked. Going uphill (north) I didn’t recognize this as the spot where the incident happened. On my return trip going downhill, I recognized it from Dork's video.
I didn’t really see the rut as a big issue going north (uphill) because you see it well in advance can can adjust your path accordingly.
Going downhill was an entirely different story. This rutted area totally sneaks up on you because you come around a corner and BOOM, there it is! I had to slow down fast to avoid getting eaten by that rut on my DRZ. After I went by, I had this “holy heck” moment and realized that’s where the crash happened, so I turned around and went back up to see the rut again.
I did video of it and added some commentary, but I’m really slow to take the time to edit videos so I haven’t added it to my channel yet.
The roads change every year due to vehicle traffic creating ruts in the spring melt, or from erosion from spring melt and/or massive rain, which happened in early July of 2022.

The ruts were pretty mean this last summer. I feel like the late spring showers added to the trails being pretty rutted out.
Sweet video. Planning on tackling the WABDR this next riding season.

Having lived in the PDX, I love the PNW! But, it’s a long way from South Mississippi. Great vids from you and Dork. Sorry about your buddy. Looks like a nasty tib/fib.

It is an excellent Video. I’m enjoying it. I need to take a trip up to the Pacific North West. It's been a long time since I followed a River Road. I just spent a week in Colorado, and it was awesome, but it doesn't have the River Roads like the Northwest. Man, that sucks about your buddy. You can't be too careful.
