Great video. I'm a fishing enthusiast and a retired pilot. You must've been fishing under the downwind leg of an air racing pattern .. the engine noise and brief shadow on the far bank were impressive! The best of both worlds.
I was just blessed with a brand new early 80s model 300. Was my wife's grandfathers .sadly he never got to use it it came with the matching rod as well . It was completely frozen due to the grease hardening, I just got done spending 6 hours meticulously cleaning the old grease out and re greasing it . Its good as new now I can't wait to use it . Im honored to be gifted something so sentimental from her grandmother. she made me promise to use it since he sadly never got a chance he passed away 💔 I really wish I would have gotten to know him and hope he is glad to see it all cleaned up and going to good use . I mean this thing is brand new .... it almost hurts just thinking about using it . Its one thing to find a reel like these , but to find a matching reel and rod combo it unheard of . Personally I'd love to just keep it as a collective item but like I said I promised her I'd use it and cherish it dearly. They sure don't make reels like they used too . I was amazed at the number of parts the reel is comprised of . Thanks for the video. Nice looking spot you got there it looks like .
Just came across your channel because i was pulling up any footage of vintage reels like mine in action.Ive got a functioning Vintage Mitchell 302 Saltwater reel ..made in France.--Good to meet you,-MTF from San Antonio Tx👍🐟🇨🇱
Funny, I thought you were adding the bomber sounds when you missed a hit till I saw the shadowat 5 min mark. I'm an old fogey reliving my youth through Garcia Mitchell reels and Garcia Conolon rods. If you look close what you have is a 3-0-0 or hythenated Mitchell.
I have a couple of 300's myself. One from the 50's the other from the 70's. Also have the 302 Saltwater version, all great reels. Where is that creek located, is that near Convrese? I can hear the training aircraft flying overhead from Randolph.
Awesome video! I have mine from when I was a kid. With maintenance it is still going strong. Push it into service every once in a while just for old time's sake! Subbed.
I still have the same 301 Mitchell (left handed version of the 300) that I bought back in the '60's. With the exception of a little wear, it still works like new, even after thousands of casts. Also fish North Park regularly in the winter/spring, as I live near there.
If you don't mind me asking. What did you pay for it in the 60s. I'm trying to get an idea of how much some of these reels cost when they where on the market. I've only had problems recently with one my 300s. Making a video curently and it sounds like the drag or a gear slipping.
Oh man, I'm an old man now, and can barely remember what I did this morning, but it seems that I paid around $30.00 or so for it when I bought it back then. Also have a couple rods for that reel that I bought back then also. One is a very old Lew's speed stick, and the other is one I ordered from a Bass Pro Shops catalog at a later date in the mid 70's.
Just remembered that I still have a Shimano Bantam magnumlite 2000gt, that I bought new back in '83 for $99.95-still use it and still have the box it came in with the price sticker on it. I have it on a pistol grip Loomis Composite that I bought at the same time from the old Elroy's Fishin' Hole in Universal City back then. Try to find a Loomis for $60.00 now. Works as smooth as silk to this day...
Just found an old Field and Stream ad from '69 online and it lists the price of the 300 as $15.95. Half as much as I thought-- I suffer from old man syndrome apparently. Also shows a Zebco 606 for $8.00.
My dad's fishing reel is just like that one, and he got it in about 1960 also. I see that the spool your reel is fitted with is from a newer model (you can tell by the shape of the drag-adjustment knob). I have a Mitchell 300 from about 1971 (it has the same style of spool that yours has), and I fished with it until just recently. I also have a finger-bail model which belonged to my grandfather. That reel goes back to the earliest days of the Mitchell 300, I think. Interestingly, the rate of spool oscillation on my grandfather's Mitchell 300 is incredibly slow. I just checked, and it takes about 10.5 cranks of the handle to put the spool through a complete oscillation, while the 300 I have from 1971 takes about 3.25 cranks of the handle to do the same. Now, fishing with an old reel is a more authentic experience if you use an old-time rod too! Rod actions were VERY different back in those days!
I have this too reel Mitchell 300, with the original plastic box, and also the booklet, with the extra spool... I love vintage fishing ! Very nice video, bye ! ;)
Used to have one with a "half bail", wonder what year they were made? Gotta say, they were the best, bar none! Truth be told, they still will compete with just about anything made today.
When i was a teenager in the late 60's I used a mitchell 300 ..Pump gas all day at Owens Esso in Edgewater Md go home and get my Mitchell rod and reel and my USA made Stanley thermos and head back to the Cove (saltwater cove off the South River) ,,remember catching many Chained Pickerel fish ... One memory i have that has stuck with me all of these years is I casted out started reeling it back in something grabbed my Tony Accetta spoon starting going away from me , i couldn't stop it , finally the line broke ..all these years i wondered what that was ...Monster Carp? Snapping turtle ?
Hey... enjoyed your video... I have a NEW, never used 302N that was a gift to my dad back in the 1980's or earlier. Trying to find out if it has any value since it is new. Your link above is not working....
Just bought one on offer up. Where serial number supposed to be is a v no other letters or numbers. Can anyone supply info? Put it on a old Berkeley rod got 3 bass hsd a great day. Enjoyed your video, subscribed, keep em coming. Tight lines.
It's just a rod off a cheap 20$ combo from Walmart. I use 13# floro on my Mitchel's. I don't use braid as I'm afraid it will cut into the bail. I plan on going to the coast soon and will try to see what it can really handle.
you realize pretty much nobody fished these reels with the anti-reverse engaged? In fact manual anti-reverse made these reels far more useful than today's overly complex reels that eliminate your ability to use the ability to control your bait/lure without opening the bail. One example is fishing the rifle in a stream/river and wanted to adjust the line in the water as your lure worked down the area.

I've got one of these it's about 45 yrs old now and still good as new. It was a present from my dad.

I have 7. My first one I bought was over 50 years ago!! I love them.
Great. I've got a 300a and now a 330 ottomatic. Plan to make a video on it soon as that auto bail is kinda strange.
great reel, great sound.
Great reel. I have one from 1960 also. Works great and well made. Nice video.

this was my 1'st " super good" reel... it was as exciting as a new car...… over...50 years ago....
I have 2 if these 300s now. Still feels better to me than a new reel. The Mitchell 330 ottomatic I just got was more exciting than getting my truck.
Throwback Fishing my grandpa gave me that exact reel. By far my favorite reel now.
Good job young man, God bless you.

60$ was alot of money then. That's almost like buying a Stella now. Well worth the money though. So we'll built even my son could use it one day.

Early 50s most likely. They didn't make them for long.
I have my grandpas ‘58 300 been using it all my life I’m 41.
Without a doubt my favorite reel. The only spinning reel I use now unless I'm running braid. Have a new project video coming up where I refinish one.

Me encanta el video, pescando con carrete mitchel 300 antiguos
Im still looking into restoring my grandfathers mitchell 300. I dont want to break it
They're easy to clean and bullet proof. Just make sure to use the correct size screwdrivers so you don't bugger up the screws, they're brass.
Just bought one on offer up. Where serial number supposed to be is a v no other letters or numbers. Can anyone supply info? Put it on a old Berkeley rod got 3 bass hsd a great day. Enjoyed your video, subscribed, keep em coming. Tight lines.
Serial number is on rhe base On the side where it mates with the rod Cove
Sounds like it needs cleaned and greased. I like Mitchell Reels.
Dad used to have the full collection of the Mitchell 300 he had the 300. Along with the a b c I believe he had the d and e
I have the a and c
Whats special about the ac-de???
Rod used by you,its power and the line capacity? Which power of line is generally used in vintage garcia mitchell 300?
It's just a rod off a cheap 20$ combo from Walmart. I use 13# floro on my Mitchel's. I don't use braid as I'm afraid it will cut into the bail. I plan on going to the coast soon and will try to see what it can really handle.
@@RCVasquez634 I fish 330 and 440 autobails with braid. It's nice not beating up my fingers casting braid all day.
Im looking for an old rod to use for small catfish any ideas and 30 ish dollars or less if possible
I'd look at the combos at Walmart, some have decent rods on them. For just a rod by itself academy has there h20 house brand for around 20$.
I just bought a mitchell 402
( must say... needs more line)
plutoplatters t
How big a catfish can you catch with a Mitchel 300? I own two that were made in the 1960's
Check out gene the machine he catches some 30-40lb catfish handles them no problem
The question is ,How big of a catfish can YOU catch? The Mitchell won't let you down you might. Cove
I have 3 of them
What rod are you using?
It's a cheap rod off a 20$ combo from Walmart. It's worked well enough and I'm not worried if I brake it or leave it in my truck.
I just found one in a estate sale
