This was definitely The Best Battle to End the 2013 School year and bring in 2014
At Southern most students play four and graduate and go on with there lives. I saw people in Talladega Band who played in Southern band seven or eight years ago. Those are grown men and women competing against kids.
And still lost. Lol they not no kind of men or women!
Put it in simple language. You can try to hide weaknesses in music but those who know music will see. Talladega is no where close to the class of Southern. ( Musical Ability)
You right I seen a couple of SOUTHERN trumpet players on mello, but they trippin thinking poo ass talladega neck and neck with SU they better go look for Jsu and still get that ass bussed.

Talladega went up against Alcorn "Sounds of Dynomite, and Southern " Human Juxebox. Next its Jackson State "Sonic Boom of the South". Cant wait.

In person at this battle, T.C. Mellos were louder than the clips. So was SU Baritones. Both bands was beasting.
S/o to alcorn, valley, and su for giving TC the exposure...i think its real big of these school help another hbcu get its band program off the ground

Yes Southern still handled business with just half their band there. Thats not an excuse. Its simply facts. TC has a good band they just started to play boring songs like Billy Ocean and George Michael after around 18 minutes. TC best song was the first one they played. It went downhill after that. SU made their point and left. TC band Director is a Southern man himself so naturally he felt the need to model TC band out of the #1 rated band, thats Southern.

The difference is...Dega's btones sound like 4 different loud btones. SU's sound like one massive btone. That there is the separation

Im in the biggest HBCU band out right now (BCU) . We don't have 28 btones. We had 23 this year . This is definitely probably 90% of their band. Probably more. These ppl ridin SU dick lol .
Its far from 90% and not half either more like 70% most of the trumpets look present but the tubas and btones were mission a lot of players can't see about the tbones to far in the back, woodwinds nobody cares it could of been one I wouldn't notice Lol
I agree I think su had a better song selection and they won but give TC a year or two. And I hope these swac bands keep sleeping on these guys cuz they gonna embarrass somebody like they already have before but they are getting better by the performances...

It sounds like they study SU, so they can give them a run for their money. SU should be flattered that they want to be like them. Next time the battle will be with SU's full band.

Talladega loud and they sound good but the arrangements need to be upgraded... SU gets the W because they have the balance of it all in the clips... and don't sleep this is probably SU pep band.. yall know the band gets smaller in the spring but Talladega got something to prove... so they got all accounted with a lot of seasoned players... lets keep these things in mind
A lot of people pissed off because I think they never would have thought a band that been around for only 2 years could have stood a chance to su. When I was in high school I'll be honest I low key looked up to su but after playing against them I was like is this the su iv been looking up to??!? They wasn't as loud or clean as Talladega.
This was the perfect setting for TC to make a name of themselves. Kudos to them, but they are not on SU's level quality wise. Volume they have it, but they have some work to do. Any collegiate musician knows established programs aren't in marching band mode in the spring, but TC lives for parade season and BOTB's. I'd like to hear TC show some versatility.

Hbcu bands are diverse. You have your concert style sounding bands like Famu, Bethune, Grambling, and a few others. You have bands that focus on halftime shows. (although in the SWAC that's all but gone with the exception of Grambling and a couple of others). And then you have the power style bands that Southern has made very popular. This is a "bloody" battle between the jukebox, who've inherited the power style as their own, and an upstart TC band trying to upend SU at their own game. I'd say they're certainly doing a good job of imitating SU, but I've yet to see them differentiate themselves as an original style band. Until then they're just yet ANOTHER knockoff southern band SCARED to have their own identity. On another note.....BOTH bands are blowing and TC is holding their own. Lol... Imho

Is it me or do the guys and gals down south make playing look like it hurts? No disrespect but it looks like some of y'all gonna cause some major physical damage to yourselves out there. lol. That said I wish there was more stuff like this up here.
It looks like it for sure how some of them put their whole body in their instrument. The sound is phenomenal!

Comin from a UNbiased person. SU was louder as usual....but they lose control sometimes with it. still sounded good. I liked TCs volume too but they seemed to have a tad bit more control when blowin'. Damn near carbon copy bands though.

SOUTHERNS tubas sounds really bad. I understand wanting to play loud, however when it becomes sloppy and you need to pull back. Talladega's program is only two years old.

Oh, as someone mentioned...S.U. was missing alot of horn players, but they were still cranking! Imagine if they had the whole Juke squad, it would have been a mass murder.
TC sounds good but nothing they played the whole battle was better than "Beyond". TC puts you in the mind of Bama State lots of volume with below par arrangements. TC only had 2 good arrangements the whole battle 1) Happy & 2) Thuggish Ruggish Bone...... If TC gets better arrangers then they'll definitely be a force to deal with
Talladega in round 1&2 were so powerful that it seems like they won....but if we grade this like a boxing match I think this battle is a tie...Round 3&4 southern sounded way better and round 5 no band had a clear edge
