89 and up Thunderbirds were not fox body based. Its an entirely different chassis that was superior, but larger and heavier. Handled much better, and used in other models like the Cougar, made to 97 or Mark VIII (air ride) made to 98 which I have one of, and was the base of one of the best engines they made - 4.6 32v used in the Cobra models, and then evolved into the newer engines they are using now. They set a speed record with the Mark VIII many years ago hitting over 180mph with this engine.
My dad had one. It was pretty heavy, but a really nice car overall. The engine was so much better than the Turbo Coupe he had before that. If they had held the weight down it would have been a SHO killer.
A Thunderbird with the engine in the back would be sweet!! They should put a 5.2L predator N/A motor over the back wheels and then a supercharged 5.2L could be named the Ford Hummingbird lol.
Not throwing shade at ideal but yea I'm not at all aware of a Mazda powered tbird. The last gen had a jag sourced v8 but other than that it's been standard ford power plants v6 and v8s
While the Thunderbird did get the 5.0L V8 for a time, neither T-Birds at that time stamp shown had it. The first had the Essex Supercharged 3.8L and the second had the 4.6L SOHC modular engines. Also, that was an MN12 chassis, not the Fox body. It was the 9th Generation that got the Fox chassis. And to my knowledge, the Thunderbird never got a 6-speed manual. Always a 5-speed manual, or 4-speed auto.
Funny that you mention the Thunderbird getting “weird”, my first car was a black ‘91 Thunderbird 5.0 I got from my grandpa. Low KM when I got it and in amazing condition. I swapped in a T5 manual trans from a Mustang in my high school automotive class and cut the springs to lower it about an inch, and threw on ‘04 Cobra wheels. In my opinion the Thunderbird should have came from the factory with exactly this setup. It was sooooo fun to drive. Get like a fox. Had this really cool look to it. Ended up getting written off by some clown driving a VW in an parking lot after a big snow storm. Honestly that generation Thunderbird is pretty cool. Just gotta have a vision.
I fear that Ford's vision is too ambitious. They turned that classic tbird into the car cancer early 2000's "thunderbird". Dodge got lucky with making the charger a four door. Sedans actually sell. Convertible coupes don't.
Yeah the tuner market pushing this thing past unheard of records.... As a tunercar. On semi-slicks. On a prepped dragstrip surface that is so sticky you would lose your shoes walking across it. With 1 full can of trackbyte sprayed on each wheel. MURCAAAAA!!! Imagine if america just made good cars right out of the factory. Just once.
I always thought Ford should have scrapped the GT350 and GT500 for a mid-engine lightweight 5.0L Coyote or 5.2L VooDoo flat plane platform long before the C8 even came out. It would have been the perfect sports car to compete with C7 corvette that is not the price of the high end GT.
But you also have to look at it like this, the GT500 is ford's second best track car besides the GT. The GT350 is just a cheaper, but still great looking 500. But in my opinion the GT500 is going to be on the cars ford won't stop making, just like the F-150. It's just a matter of marketing and how easy it is to produce in high amounts.
@@Ethmatic Sure, but look at the equipment needed to make that 4,000+lbs beast move around the track. I've known a few guys now that have said the 500 isn't as great as the internet fans say it is. If you truly want a car that can handle, it needs to be light, nimble, and have a good power to weight ratio. A C8 with a track package and tune, can easily take down a GT500 on the track (but not drag racing), just because the physics are behind it for maneuvering. And do it for much less. If Ford had made the Mustang, and just let it be a Mustang (without trying to make a race car), and instead focussed on a lightweight chassis with a Voodoo engine, imagine what they could have done. They could have easily created a $70k-$80k machine that would have put the C8 to shame without even having to supercharge.
@@Condor1970 Oh of course I definitely agree. But the problem is in my opinion, ford put too much time in making the decision to make the GT it's track car. I mean yeah rhe GT500 looks great, with its performance and even but if they lowered the weight. I will agree the C8 is definitely one of the best track cars to hit it. No hate on that, but Ford could honestly do better with the GT series and really make a car that can challenge that.

🤔Umm 8:20 The Thunderbird Super Coupe was NOT 6 speed! NOT Fox body based ! NOT Mazda powered! BTW.. THE 5 speed version of the Thunderbird SC is one the most underrated cars ever! It actually won Motor Trend Car of the Year for 1989. It was bad ass car back then and was ahead of its time.
You're right I still love the Pantera and if I could find one I would buy in a heartbeat, he did do some like 2 cars and the nineties it's on it's on Google somewhere, they look good
The Rumored Electric Corvette, is called the E-Ray, and it's a Hybrid with a 6.2L LT2 and electric motor in the Transaxle and a front mounted electric motor driving the front wheels, it's more of a GT car with 600 + HP. The top hybrid Hypher car from Corvette will be the "Zora", Twin-turbo V8 from the ZR-1 + 2 electric motors for a reported 1100++HP..Yikes!!!
Corvette been a supercar since 1966 with the nasty underrated 427 that make easy 500+ hp with tune and headers in a car weighed same or less then the c8
The Vette is a cool car. The transmission issues would keep me from owning one if I were a car guy. I’ve got a couple of buddies who own them locally, but both have already agreed to trade them for the Z06 when available. Oddly, both of their cars have less than 2k miles on them and have seen more time at the dealership’s garage than their own. Magnificent engineering but poor execution on quality.
gt500 is using the tremec dual clutch wonder what exactly would be wrong with the tremec dual clutch in the vette with almost 50% less power being shoved through it. (wonder if it's because it's a transaxle type tranny. )
I've never thought of the Mustang as a true sports car. The rear seats has always placed it in the sedan category in my mind. The Mustang is a sports sedan. The GT40 is the only real sports car Ford makes. The blue oval needs something in between the Mustang and the GT40. Those cars are worlds apart. A 2 seat sports car in the $50-$70,000 price range would be ideal.
Well the problem with your logic is the definition of a sedan is 4 door so no the mustang has never been a sedan ….. well unless you are trying to add the Mach E into the mustang argument
@@KAZ109 True, a sports coupe would be a more appropriate description. A coupe is defined as a 2 door with less than 33 cubic feet of interior space. Either way, the fact that the Mustang isn't a 2 seater stops me from thinking of it as a true sports car. I'd like for Ford to bring out an all new affordable 2 seat sports car priced like a Vette. A true direct competitor to the Corvette.
Totally understand your logic, but have you driven a 2018+ Mustang GT lately? With simple mods like headers back exhaust, lowering springs, bigger brakes, cold air intake, and a tune, these cars perform as well as, if not better, than most actual sports cars. My 2018 GT is a 500+HP beast. It may have a back seat but you soon forget about it when you're pulling through all 6 gears on a back twisty road and it's hugging that road like it's on rails. These newer 3rd gen Coyotes are so far beyond the old fox bodies and even those original Shelby's. They definitely have the power and handling of a true sports car but with a bit more muscle
@@michaeldeloach838 Without question the performance is there. I'm probably in the minority with my opinion of a true sports car only being a 2 seater, for the very reasons you pointed out. But none the less, I'm a purist in that sense. You reminded me of another point. The Mustang is odd in that it's the only car that has a price range that starts as low as msrp of $27,500 for a base model. Then goes all the way to $107,000 for a fully loaded Shelby GT500. What other platform does that? Even the 807 Horse power Challenger SRT Super Stock tops out at $81,000. The pony car is an anomaly in that sense too.
@@sentry8992 that's a good point, about price. The full meat and potatoes can be had in the lower end of that price spectrum too. I love the Shelbys but is it really worth all that extra money for a little more performance? Not in my book. I only paid $35K all in for my 500+hp GT and it's not even a premium yet it'll hold its own against any of them. All I need is a supercharger and I'm in Shelby power territory and I'm still less than $45K all in. Why would anyone need to spend twice as much for so little gain? The bang for your buck factor is off the charts.
Originally I was a Thunderbird kid when I was a kid in the 50's. Ford should have kept up with the 2- seat T-Bird all these years and evolved the T-Bird like Chevy did the Corvette. But Ford took a shit on the T-Bird after the 1957 year. The T-Bird would probably look like a two-seater spaceship by now in 2022. I was never really into Mustangs. In the middle 60's, there should have been a 427 Cobra T-Bird. (Same engine they put into the 427 Cobra)
I mean seeing the fact that ford just brought back the maverick and sold so many that they had to close the orders until a later date, it only makes sense that they would want to bring back the thunderbird as well.
If Ford REALLY wanted to compete with the vette, they would have done so many years ago. Sure they started with the t-bird, but that didn't last terribly long with the t-bird morphing into... well what it became in the 90s, then that weird resurrection in the early 2000s. And if they do bring it back as a vette competitor, cool, but as an EV, it's not a REAL competitor.
Then, of course, one alternative would be to just build your own sports car from scratch or retromod that's cheaper, faster, more reliable, and easier to maintain.
Pretty much all C8s are in the 80k-130k range once optioned from their barebones base setup. Still a great deal but I’m getting tired of everyone using the base corvette price point as a comparison when in reality the car is much more than that .
We're not even on the final version of the CAP at they still haven't released the ZR1 version yet which is gonna have like a 1000 horsepower and it's gonna be a hybrid and will never make anything better than the Corvette
Cheapest C8 I have found is $90k. And on top of that, it's used. I feel like people really need to stop using msrp on these newer cars as a positive bc the markup is absolutely atrocious and its near impossible to even buy at "msrp" leading to a big downside tbh.
I understand what you're saying, however I believe there are some dealers that will sell it to you at MSRP. The problem is they have long waiting lists, so it will take months before you can buy a Corvette though them.

The new bronco was the best thing that happened to us older model bronco owners. I have a 96, in 5 speed. The value of my bronco skyrocketed because of how disappointing the new one is. Ford is doing the raptor bronco, 70k for 400hp, bigger wheel, no manual and its a twin turbo V6, really way to costly. Jeep does a 495hp V8 6 speed manual, bigger tires for the same price. Not a hard choice there, Jeep was smart and filled in the spot where original bronco owners were wanting.
Honestly if the make an electric car to compete with the vette is still a lost. Diesel vs Diesel, gas vs gas, electric vs electric. Thats how I feel it should be classed.
Fortunately less people have began calling it an old mans car. Cause considering I’m into the c5 z06 which was track focused, exclusively manual, and held lap records of its day. It’s just tedious. The c8 should’ve had a manual option though.
@@TheBeatlesShow I disagree really. And no hate, but the leaf springs are mounted transversely while truck leaf springs are mounted parallel to the driveshaft. It actually does help help limit body roll. And they can be swapped out. Sadly, Thunderbird has never been more than a saloon with a wannabe racer vibe. I looked at the last reboot in the 1980s, it looked interesting, even had a turbo ... but that turbo was on the 4 cylinder, which brought it's power up to about the same as the lame 6 cylinder. Idk what the suspension etc. were like, as it was yet another gutless wonder.
Plenty of cars that can get close at almost half the price. I've raced Camaro SS cars that can rival the C8 in a straight line and don't cost near as much. The Camaro ZL1 can compete, however they are pricey like a C8. The Mustang GT and above rival the C8 for a lot less unless you go the GT500 route. My 2018 Mustang GT is pushing out about 500 hp. It cost me 31k brand new and had 460 hp stock. I can run with the C8 for a minute and definitely beat it in the hp per dollar ratio. Regardless, with all the problems the C8 has had with wheels breaking and transmissions failing, I'd get a C7. They still look like Corvettes and don't have those problems.
I’m sorry but it may compete numbers wise but in real life. The c8 destroys an SS or a GT it’s not even a competition. The gt 500 can compete a little but they are about the same price point in the real world.
The bias from you is strong. We get it you like the C7 front engine stuff. So get one of those. The C8 is still better than every car you mentioned. Even the ones you lied about keeping up with a C8 "you raced"🙄😒. Stop it, no Camaro SS is keeping up, the ZL1 does not, the GT500 needs nearly 300+ more HP to beat it in quarter mile time and you're claiming less potent cars somehow can keep up? When you need to lie, then your bias is literally cult level. Face it, GM isn't changing the Corvette back to that front engine setup, is done all it can and MR is still the best layout for putting down power and getting better lap time in race or performance cars. Wait until the Z06 lands, you'll be in here creating fantasy about cars you don't have that can keep up for half the price and HP to performance ratio nonsense.🤣😂
@@evilformerlys4704 I stated facts. A lot of what you said is true as well. When I got my GT, I almost got a C7, but the GT is a better daily driver. There is no bais. I love Vettes and I actually CAN get a C8 if I really want to, but I won't. Too many problems like I mentioned. My track car is a Ferrari 488, so I'm good. You missed my point. I never said those cars were as good in overall performance as a C8. The C8 is a marvel around a track. I've driven one. As long as the wheels don't break from all that power, they're a blast. I said those others weren't too far behind in a straight line and didn't cost nearly as much. HP per dollar value is a real thing. If you disagree, that's fine. I couldn't care less.
@@Arturito2017 Not in straight line. The C8 will win, obviously, but it doesn't "destroy" them, unless they are on a track. The SS and GT aren't supposed to compete against a C8. The price difference is what really sets them apart. C8 Corvette starting price of $60k and turbo s starting price of $207k. So what is your point here Daud?

@Jayson Adams Ok 12 year old calm down. The camaro is not 10 times better at all in any category. They are the slowest out of the three in all categories besides weight and tq. The camaro looks have gone down even camaro fanboys say it has. The camaro qt quarter mile is 12.5 to 12.6 the 5.0 is near 11.9 to 12. The GT has more hp 460 vs 455 the camaro dose have more tq 455 vs 420 but weights more. Mustangs have gone in to walls because of drivers that don't know how to drive. A 2005 mustang slow as hell hits a wall because of the driver not being able to drive the car. This also goes to vettes hellcats and other cars the reasoning for camaro is nobody buys those cars besides the older ones.
First time I watched your channel. I think the Ford GT is really a unique vehicle. Even compared to another supercars. The new Camaros and Mustangs are total beasts. The GT 350 Mustang I thing is the one though. The Mustang the the Coyote engine is a terrific combo. Tons of potential. The new C8 vette I see as a unique vehicle in our current time frame. These and the C8 Z06 in particular is the last of a breed. Electric cars will prove to be very fast and quick, as they already are. But until some very dirty secrets of electric vehicles are solved they will always be simply a novelty. Watching a Plaid go is like watching grass grow ...... albeit grow really fast.
You can make all the comparisons you want. None of them hold water. There is no comparison to the corvette in performance looks and price period as this video shows

Well, since Dodge crushed both Ford and Chevy, Ford is looking to re-enter the battle for best. Although I think Chevy is opting to wait and bid its time, until it can come out with an electric chassis/platform.
They already have an EV platform that they’re using in the Silverado EV and Hummer EV. I understand those r both trucks, but if I remember correctly, one of the major advantages 2 BEV powertrains is that they r so stupidly easy 2 implement into other types of cars that one manufacturer can essentially use one powertrain across the entire lineup without much difficulty. From there, all that’s left is 2 code the CPU and tune the platform 2 optimize it 4 the car type in question. So although Chevy doesn’t have a “supercar EV platform”, in all reality, they don’t need 1
The Ford GT is hand-built by Multi-matic in Canada. It's a carbon fiber monocoque car. It has a two-stage suspension with street and track systems separate from each other. it's on another level from the Corvette in several areas. The C8 is sweet and can be stupid fast modified too, but the GT is SPECIAL by comparison.

Great minds think alike! Thx for watching!

(wonder if it's because it's a transaxle type tranny. )
I once spent a summer in one of those 1st generation Tbirds and it was pretty good!

@@KAZ109
True, a sports coupe would be a more appropriate description.
@@michaeldeloach838
Without question the performance is there.
The mustang and Camaro aren’t Corvette competitors they compete with the challenger. The only modern corvette competition was the viper.
The real competitor is the Ford GT but they decided to make it Limited and Expensive
10:51 pretty sure that's a picture of a 1966 Ford Ranchero NOT a Maverick. (I used to own one)
I think the lighting bird is good 🎉
Then, of course, one alternative would be to just build your own sports car from scratch or retromod that's cheaper, faster, more reliable, and easier to maintain.

The C5 isn't worth your money. It uses leaf spring suspension.
Awesome response and thanks for all the support!
Mustangs have gone in to walls because of drivers that don't know how to drive. A 2005 mustang slow as hell hits a wall because of the driver not being able to drive the car. This also goes to vettes hellcats and other cars the reasoning for camaro is nobody buys those cars besides the older ones.

I've always saw it as Mustans vs Camero and Vette vs the GT40
