      @@kc-qs8qg call it what you like sir but I'm living all of the promises found throughout the Big Book... it's given me a life beyond my wildest dreams.
      The interesting thing about being accused of being in a cult is that it shines the light on the accuser... showing they have absolutely no concept of how the alcoholic's mind works. Speaking for myself, I was 'selfish & self-centered to the core' (exactly as described in the BB). Obviously those traits led to unbelievable defiance & an ego as huge as a house; I was gonna do whatever I wanted to do when I wanted to do it. I would 'brook no control from man or God.' I admit that I, 'gave myself completely to the simple program' by asking another alcoholic to show me how he had recovered. Even if it was a cult I was at a point whereby I didn't care whatsoever what the method was as long as I got the result. I was given very simple suggestions that I could take or leave. Not very cultish sounding to me?? I'm sure your use of the word "cult" would elucidate the fact that you are aware of my home group. With that in mind I think you will understand what I'm going to say next. At the end of my very first attendance at the RtR Plymouth UK I approached a guy and asked him if he would be my sponsor. I will never forget the terrified state I was in because I had long since known the problem centred in my mind & that I needed a "complete psychic change" although I only knew it then to be, "I can't think my own way out of my own thinking." So in this terrified state I said to this guy, "I've heard that you lot are controlling... I'm out of control and need somebody to control me." He looked me dead in the eyes and used the phrase I've already used in this reply, "if you are an alcoholic of my type then no one will be able to control you... you will do what you want to do when you want to do it." He laid out a simple plan of actions that brought about a psychic change; allowing me a freedom that I've never experienced before. I'm more than happy with you calling it a cult because it has no affect on my sobriety 😊 My last drink was 23/04/1998. I've been sober for over 23 years and I'm still able to do what I want to do when I want to do it... I just want to do different things today. I became a "productive member of society" by working the 12 steps.
      I worked for many years in Child Protection; paid as a project manager developing & coordinating a project whereby I would supply every school within Plymouth a councillor in response to referrals I received. As part of my Step 9 amends I also worked more hours voluntarily than those I was paid for. This was initially to make up for amends I was unable to make directly however I loved my job so much I didn't really separate the two. I developed workshops and delivered them for the charity I worked for and never charged anything for them, saving thousands if done by an outsider plus the hundreds saved by my delivering them for free. Through the recognition of my work I was asked to become Plymouth's "independent visitor" for Children's Homes. I would visit Children's Homes any time of the day or night, any day of the week completely unannounced. I would check all care plans were up-to-date and spend time with the children there etc etc. The job came with what I thought to be a ridiculous pay cheque for what the role entailed so I let the charity claim it all, I did it for free. All this is not to say, "hey look at me, look how good I am" but to highlight a couple of points. The BB promises me that "self seeking will slip away" and I will learn to "think of others." I did these things because I wanted to... I wanted to. Not some cult telling me I have to do these things. It would be the first cult I've heard of that allows its members to give multiple thousands to a charity but only asks for voluntary donations to help pay the rent etc. I've given a hell of a lot of information that makes your quote nonsensical. It would be interesting to learn why you think we are a cult? Without the fabricated, hearsay nonsense such as the "controlling " I was told about. I challenge you to lay out plain FACTS that make us a cult. I am pretty certain that you will either ignore this because you have nothing to back up your comment OR you would have responded like all the other weak minded individuals who bandy the word around but offer no substance to what they say... the reply would have been a 1 word answer, "cult"
      🙄

    This book has a terrible understanding of agnosticism and atheism. Agnosticism is just the position that some supernatural claims are unknowable because some supernatural claims are unfalsifiable (which is a bad thing). And atheism is just the lack of belief in God or gods. You can also be an agnostic and an atheist simultaneously (aka an agnostic atheist).
    Also, you can be an agnostic atheist and believe in powers greater than yourself. For example, gravity is a power greater than myself because no matter what I do gravity will affect me in some way. And I know gravity exists because I'm experiencing it right now (I'm not floating into space). But I don't see what belief in a power greater than myself has to do with alcoholism or why belief in a power greater than myself is necessary in order to overcome alcoholism. This chapter and book as a whole never explains this. It basically just asserts the claims without evidence. And that which can be asserted without evidence can be dismissed without evidence...

    As an atheist - need to dig deep to find a way to interpret what he says charitably.
    Bill started as a deist - a person who believes in a higher power and cannot conceive of a universe without one.
    He seems to assume everyone is like him, and well - he is wrong.
    Bill went from having a "belief in a god" to believing "God had a belief in Bill".
    The entire chapter is an attempt to convince people that deism is the most rational position.
    In reality, an atheist is just a person who is not a theist.
    It is simply a rejection of the assertion that there are gods. Atheism is too often defined incorrectly as a belief system.
    Agnosticism is not the middle ground between the two - you are either "one who believes", or you are not "one who believes".
    Agnosticism and Gnosticism deal with whether you claim to have knowledge about it or just faith. Gnostic claim knowledge...
    I don't think you can convince someone to believe in a higher power - and I think that is necessary to be able to believe a higher power can help you.
    If feels like he never even had an atheist look at this before he published it. It is such a wad of stereotypical comments about how people think atheists think.
    Was hard to read. I hope people don't feel this way today.

      Please post actual video content, instead of creating an account simply to dog on a piece of literature that helps people who are hopeless. For one, it's in very poor taste, and it's not helpful to anyone in recovery to know about these so-called anti-AA "gospels." What does it matter if Bill Wilson used LSD in later years? It's even a controversy in AA circles. None of his contemporaries approved of his drug use. Bill W. never claimed to be perfect, and it's not his example most AAs follow. Other alcoholics helping one another are the foundational therapeutic aspect of AA. If you're trying to be helpful to recovering alcoholics, then you're falling severely short. As far as I can tell, the only purpose these comments serve is to stir up confusion and contention, as well as acting as a medium for you to vent your spleen.

      All you can do is launch ad-hominen attacks - pure cult-speak...

    • @coreylaster4953
      @coreylaster4953 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The ad hominem fallacy only applies if I'm trying to rebut your arguments by attacking you. I'm not addressing your arguments, I'm speaking directly to you, man to man. I'm addressing your attitude, and the particularly vitriolic way in which you keep making these posts. They're demeaning. They're inflammatory. They do nothing but stir up contention. You aren't going to change my mind about that.
      I am not advocating AA in particular as the be-all and end-all of recovery programs. I am part of NA, but I only occasionally attend meetings. I am also in therapy for sex addiction. I am also on medication and have a sponsor who is very supportive of me being in therapy. I prefer NA personally, because it looks more closely at the mental health aspect of addiction, but that's beside the point. Anything that helps move a person forward in their recovery has my full support, regardless of its origins. I'll acknowledge that AA has a lot of messed up thinking, and the founders had their own faults and serious blunders, but the "Orange Papers," if an addicted person read them, would arguably give them the fuel they needed to return to active addiction. It may well sow the seed of "this organization is a cult, so I can't trust any of these people. I was better off drunk/high than I am here." AA saves a lot of lives, and a lot of folks think it ruins a lot of lives.
      Given that, what do you recommend as the best course of action for a person who has lost control completely? Do you have any honest advice that doesn't contain the word "cult"? No sarcasm. I'm asking an honest question here. What is your counsel on this matter?

    • @kc-qs8qg
      @kc-qs8qg 2 ปีที่แล้ว
