  • In this video, we are going to be looking at the progression to learning the board off. Taking you from basic jumps, to jumps with grabs, one footers, and then onto board offs.
Over the past years, I have helped numerous friends learn this trick with a common issue being that they skip to the end goal rather than breaking the process down into more manageable steps. Another issue I've found is that sometimes they have been attempting a trick that is beyond their current skill level and they need to first achieve prerequisite tricks that make learning the board off much easier.
In this video, I break down the pathway to achieving the board off and demonstrate techniques that can assist with making this trick easier to learn once you're in the air. You will see a clear path to the progression to hopefully help you learn this trick quicker and easier with a few useful tips.
It's good to try to learn new tricks but it's also important to learn the right stages at the right time. It's not only more efficient but will also help you stay safer and reduce the chance of injuries.
    5 top tips:
    1. Practicing the right stage at the right time in the correct conditions.
    2. Bigger kites = More hang time & a slower more stable kite.
    3. Practicing the board off on land and building up muscle memory is going to make it much easier when you are in the air.
    4. Try to take the board off on the way up so your start to get the board back on at the top of your jump leaving you with plenty of time to focus on the landing.
    5. If you don't go high be quick!

Great tutorial! I was able to learn the board off during my time at Panama Kite House thanks to Brendan’s help. Especially the tip regarding practicing on the beach taking the board off and putting it back on has helped me a lot in learning the trick.
I’m already excited for the next video! :)

is it harder to learn with the fronthand? doing most of my jumps with an backhanded landing Loop. This Tail-Boardoff locks a thousand times cooler!

      Hello, thanks for your comment.
I would try to learn it first with the back hand and if you get the board back on quick enough you could even still do a back handed landing loop. Are you doing one footers yet and how do you do these?
And yes the board off with the fin definitely looks better!
      Cheers, Brendan

@@TheRiderExperience Thanks! Yes, I did a few one-footer with the backhand and foot and it works pretty well but I dont like this Trick, so I see it only as a stepping stone. The Boardoff I found much harder and crash most times, cause I struggle to get back in the Straps. I should definitely do more practice on the beach. I just ask myself if its maybe worth to learn it with the front hand from the start, because for the Jesus walk and Barefoot Ski you also have to do it this way.

Great video! Please focus on obtaining clean audio recordings next time! Backdrop is beautiful, but if it is at the audio's expense -- it was definitely not worth it!

N1 tutorial brendan. Do you have any advice on how to get the board back on your feet? I can easily do it on the beach or on the floor but struggle to do it while in the air. It feels as if my arms are too short when flying. 😀

      Thanks for you message.
In case you not already doing this you can try warming and stretching just before the session. Also if you can get high enough to get the board back on at the top of the jump I find this can also make it easier.
If your in a full length or even a thick winter wetsuit this can make much harder. I am normally kitesurfing in warm waters but when I come back to the UK and wear a think winter wetsuit it take a lot for effort for the board off handle grab trick.
