    I remember the first time I saw CHP do this on the freeway in L.A., I was driving a school bus from the Central Valley on a field trip to universal studios with high school students on board. I immediately turned on my hazard lights and proceeded to drive slowly and cautiously until said caution was over… needless to say we were a little delayed to our destination but my passengers weren’t too concerned, they thought what the officer was doing was cool! Oh, and this took place almost 30 years ago!

    I never saw a state trooper do this until today. I was like "What, is he drunk?"...no, he was trying to warn everyone that there was debris in the road. I was ahead of him and wondering "What the heck, did someone hijack that trooper's vehicle?!" at first. The things you learn!

    • @eblaze619
      @eblaze619 2 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      @@emva9063 I presume you are kidding but in the case you are not, the purpose is to slow and/or stop traffic either to remove a road hazard or an accident. CHP officers will often times get dispatched to assist tow trucks and other officers that are in compromising locations, so this maneuver helps to ensure the traversing public and all others involved are safe. In the same breath if they are called to remove furniture, construction cones or anything unsafe in the travel lanes they will do a traffic break for themselves to remove hazards. Hopefully my explanation will help you better understand the purpose of traffic breaks.

In 2019 89 police died making the deaths per 100,000 11.1, to put that into perspective 410 farmers died from work related injuries the same year, at a fatality rate of 19.4 out of every 100,000. The most dangerous job is construction which had over 5,000 work fatalities in 2019.

    In the UK rolling road blocks are either done by Police or Highway traffic agency. Warning lights are put on by lead vehicle with follow me or do not pass matrix signs displayed. The lead vehicle does an initial zig zag then holds position in center lane ahead of rolling traffic.

    • @EnjoyFirefighting
      @EnjoyFirefighting 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      in Germany it depends on how many lanes the highway has and if the traffic behind the police car is rather light or heavy. In light traffic conditions they'd make further zig zags across the highway if someone didn't see them, and on the wider highways it's normal that they keep on doing ig zags across all lanes until they all have slowed down and stay behind

    I saw this maneuver on I55 south of Chicago to slow very heavy traffic down to a full stop so cars involved in a chain reaction wreck in the left lane could be driven off in a line at a right exit. That involved multiple cruisers.

      To slow down traffic, could be a pursuit up ahead, car crashes, animal on the road, pretty much anything that could endanger traffic can be a cause of one.

      Minnesota is mostly 2 lane expressways right? Would not have to swerve much to slow them down. An with only 2 lane any obstruction in one lane wold slow the other one down pretty quick. With 5 lanes one could be blocked an the 5th one still going 70mph.

    I understand in these instances, time is of the essence; whether that is to clear a disabled vehicle from the highway, or road debri so the officer up ahead can run into the road safely to remove it. However, what would be most useful in these situations is a vehicle or DOT vehicle equipped with a message board reading something like DO NOT PASS ME or something of the like.
