This Spaceship Took Eight Years To Make!

  • Of the over 1,000 scale models entered in this year's WonderFest model contest, we were most drawn to this absolutely gorgeous original scratch-built spaceship design by modelmaker Craig Dowell. Craig--a self-taught amateur modeler--has been working on this "Auxiliator 4" maintenance ship of his own design on and off for eight years, and walks us through the intricate exterior and interior details he's meticulously fleshed out. Displayed in a custom eye-catching frame, this ship was a model we kept coming back to look at all weekend at WonderFest!

    Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing comments! I really appreciate all of the positive feedback :) I'm working on a new ship for next year's Wonderfest (doing a collaboration with my oldest daughter who is a very talented artist) and I hope/plan to be at the 2024 Wonderfest. If you are able to attend next year, please stop by and say "Hi!". There were so many awesome models this year - I was completely blown away by the immense talent that was on display (took a ton of pictures)!!! And Norm and Josh from Tested... Super nice guys! I almost didn't do the interview because I was so nervous, but they really helped put me at ease... And thus this rambling interview proceeded :) Again, thank you all so much, you're the best!!

    world building is everything for space ships. Makes everything feel so much more grounded. I vastly prefer it to random kitbashing. This fine gentleman deserves a job as a concept designer...he has incredible skill and a very creative mind. Could easily see him doing some design work for a show like the expanse. Hard sci-fi seems to be his forte.

      I'm his daughter and it's so interesting that you say that because The Expanse is his absolute favorite Sci Fi show. He even made one of the walls in his bedroom look like the interior of a spaceship after being so impressed by the sets they created for that show.

      Hah, awesome thread, and yeah i agree, i also commented on how exciting things can get if you get immersed into it.
      I still have to start on the Expanse, as i do like Hard Sci-fi, so i did not recognize the style from that specifically.
      But yeah, i was thinking a similar thing, he should be doing this professionally, either for movies/TV or an upscale toy or kit brand.
      With the different modules and panels, it's like a "build your own" set, a playhouse in space, i probably would''ve love that as a kid, or, as an adult.
      In future time, greeblies might be made from kits like this.

      If I may, don't start with a finished model (styrene and paint), but rather with cardboard and/or foam core board. This way you can create a tangible representation to write on, but as the writing progresses you are likely to need some changes (like moving the airlock from the belly to the side to allow for a specific scene to take place). When you're done with the writing, then you can take the changes made to the model in the text and THEN build a final, styrene, metal and lighting model.

    What a gorgeous build!!! Loved the discussion of his progress in learning, experimenting, and making decisions on the project over time.
    From Adam's 14 year spacesuit to this gentleman's 8 year spaceship, one of the most useful, encouraging, inspiring things I carry from Tested and the book Every Tool's a Hammer is the patience and persistence to take a wildly long time on a personal build. Some builds will take a long time both because of and as a part of life. They become a part of your lifestyle as a maker, an era in your story. I am very grateful to be given this permission, this release from the pressure of time based productivity. It's ok for a personal passion build to be a long journey. It's not a waste of time, it's an evolution of process. This is a healing thing to learn to spite the cacophony of judgmental voices nagging otherwise.

    He's going for realism but everything is oriented as if there's a down, or a direction gravity pulls, which means it must have some kind of unrealistic artificial gravity. I guess that's fine but personally I prefer ships that look like they belong in space where there is no gravity. The ISS doesn't look like an airplane in space. And everything inside it isn't oriented as if there's gravity. It's personal preference, I suppose. It's still very cool.

    • @infinite-indefinity
      @infinite-indefinity 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Excellent response... I really struggled with this as I imagined how humans would undertake maintenance work on a spacecraft operating in zero gravity.
      I've spent all my time in Earth's gravity, so I found it difficult to escape my bias :) For this reason, I felt the need to replicate work spaces that resembled something I could personally relate to (a distinct floor & ceiling - establishing "up" & "down" reference points). My thinking was "these are the conditions we humans are used to working in", so if technology could closely replicate these conditions on a ship, it would be much easier for the crew to orient themselves and perform their tasks. Of course this design means that the ship would require "gravity plates" - a technology that does not exist.
