I've just removed the rubber plugs and water came pouring out on both sides. I will leave them off and see if this works as a quick fix. This must be a common problem. Thank you for making this video.

Yes, probably better without the rubber plugs. My first quick fix was to put a small hose as a drain in the rubber plug.

@@ehrenmann8553 Since removing the plugs, my boot stays dry. It’s not a proper fix so there might be a downside, but it is the quickest and easiest fix.

@@cskent8 the downside is that if you leave it without plugs the air goes inside the car and still is gonna mist all the windows. i've tested it, so the best thing to do is to get the vents sealed.

Just take the rear bumper off a lot less hassle not as much interior to remove like youve done on here.
Then unclip add sealant to the rubber and replace ensuring they clip into place.
The rear lights need to becremoved before removing bumper easy. Youve made a lot of work there for yourself.
Replace bumper the boot will be free from leaks..
    Good luck.
Anyone with wster in boot check the drain pipe from rear door switch too as well as the vents my wifes car had wet rear seats too.
But i fixed it removing bumper easy job fixed. Yes...😅

The rear side vents are unfortunately only one, the most common, of the four sources of water in the rear hatch area. The rear light housing can also leak into the same side pocket area. The drain tube for the rear camera in rear hatch door is another. Last, and I believe least common, is the two rubber grommets at the top of the trunk opening that carry cables and hoses into the hatch door. Most pool in those side areas with the grommet that you showed on the side. Others can go directly to the spare tire area, though even the side pockets can fill up and spill over into the spare tire area. The top hatch rubber grommets mentioned can also cause water marks/damage in the rear of the interior head liner. And let's not dismiss the infamous two front drains for the sunroof that cause headliner water marks/damage and possible water pooling in the front carpet area. I was so surprised when I researched the Golf MK7 issues with water access and found dozens of videos about the sources of water entry. I always wondered why I saw water on the inside of the rear hatch window after rain. Recently, I experienced and corrected the front headliner damage from the clogged sunroof drains. I love the car, but disillusioned by the decline in quality; 3rd Golf and 6th VW in last 25 years for me and my wife. Insult to injury, no more base Golf in America. Only GTIs and Rs for the foreseeable future with a base price around $30K. What to buy next? if I buy anything ...

@Bare_Essence...I'm kinda in the same boat as you but I've owned VW's and Audi's exclusively since the mid '70's and I'm disgusted I currently have a 2017 Alltrack SEL lucky (so far) no leaks issues I know of but JC a lot of owners do. One other source you didn't mention are the door speakers the sealing material VW used breaks down over time and water leaks onto carpet. I watched a YT video and the sealing material looked kind of like expandable foam, when speaker was removed the material just flaked off and sort of looked like that expandable foam use for insulating air leaks around windows and doors. I guess rubber, closed cell foam or some other material is too expensive for VW. Luckily I still have my 1999.5 Mk4 Jetta with 265kmi still starts like new engine a little weaker than new but does the job and still on original clutch. I'm taking my Alltrack in for it's first intake valve cleaning soon at 50kmi due to the direct injection and carbon build up issue they ALL have. VW did make dual injection at one point Port and Direct injection which solved the problem (only 2 year and only for Germany) but abandoned it...TOO COSTLY for them is my guess. Yeah...what to buy next is right I'm done with VW.

I think it's easier to remove rear bumper cover to access those side vents to silicone seal them properly, good idea (maybe) to add drain hose to that plug if you don't want to mess with the side vents or as a temporary fix?

    Hello Bjorn
Similarly I have all these water ingress problems especially annoying in rainy Ireland.
    Thanks for videos.
May i ask you what drill bit size did you use to drill out rivets on speakers on back doors and what screws did you use to refit speakers.
By the way, vw have an upgraded vent for under bumper, with a larger seal, also i see on a video recently the back lights seals can be bought cheaply.
    Thanks for back door videos,
    That's next job.
I've just removed the plastic bungs behind the vents.
Seems to have prevented rain water entering the bootwell and back seat.
    Thanks again.

Removing the interior is a pain and difficult to get video on it.
U must pull straight up the back door trim along the latch , remember pull Straight up. . Then removes the side trim up along door.
Then unscrew the trim by back door.
I don't pull off all the fabric trim n i still can get at vent, push the tabs.to remove the old vents. but remember water not only enters from vents, can come in especially from back break light, etc . I removed the two plugs and have had no water issues.i used permanent flexible tiger seal for vents
