    * Errata - in my excitement, I often say “tempo” when I mean “meter”. Whoops!

      Distantial lapsus linguae, or, you're talking about a kind of musical excitement which disarrays your speech engine? :)

      Probably both! :)

    This is my favorite video in the series. It is somewhat surprising, yet makes perfect sense, that we can run various time signatures in series in a harmonic "echo bed" and get away with it, it all just become “syncopation” to the ear... so long as there is some fundamental like a bass drum keeping time. I’m definitely going to experiment with this!

    • @synthseeker

      I'm happy you are enjoying it. :) Carry on.

    Thank you for sharing this! Another tip: add some "ratcheting". Tangerine Dream, founded in 1967, used this technique a lot. You can look it up of course, it's basically retriggering certain notes within a finite time in a a sequence of notes. If you listen to the album "Stratosfear" by Tangerine Dream, you'll know how ratcheting sounds like :) PS: I know Synthseeker knows ratcheting, but for those who don't know...

    • @synthseeker
      @synthseeker  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Oh sure! I’m very familiar with ratchets and I’ve wanted to do a video on them for a while. The problem is it’s hard to show HOW to do ratchets generically. I’m working on it though. :) thanks!

      @@synthseeker OK, we're on a quest of enormous importance! In Ableton it's though indeed. Manually it's easy, but generically... There exists a paying plugin, but no trial version, so that's a bit annoying (check the common search engines via the terms "ratcheting + Ableton").

    • @ModuSpaSm
      @ModuSpaSm 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@synthseeker I've read about an interesting possibility for "ratcheting" via using 2 arpeggiators in a row => you can find this via a search engine. Which isn't mentioned though, and I tried it and it's interesting, is to add some LFO's ;) Another way: I've found a great tool, via Novel Music, a Max for Live device, called "Deviate": check it out! Of course, only accessible if you have Max for Live. Variation in note lengths/values is also possible: a track with whole notes, a track with 16th notes and you combine them... If you scale them, I think it's possible to generate whole notes on one clip, generate 16th notes on another clip, play with the randomness of these notes and combine the clips... I should make a video about this, but up until now, I've never uploaded something to the net except for all this text :) Synthseeker, if you're interested, you can always contact me privately and we could collaborate, if you have the time for it... You have already 6.94K subscribers, so, very understandable you can't react to all of them, let alone start a relationship with them :)

    Warm fuzzy alert... many thanks for sharing these techniques, really helps get my head round those delicious sounds and motifs I've loved for decades. Going to have to re-listen to a few of my favourite tracks with all this in mind for even more listening pleasure and value for money! I'm slowly absorbing your teachings so eventually I'll be able to create this kind of vibe on pretty much any hardware I have, which is a sign of a great teacher, cheers 😃

      @@synthseeker Thank you! I've been learning so much and getting through so much (cheap!) gear over the years but am happy with my current kit to get my own mojo risin' - I'm off the GAS and am currently modding a Korg MicroX for aftertouch and awaiting a bargain broken RYTM Mk1 to be repaired... stay tuned, and again thanks for the encouragement 😃

    I have watched a 'few' of your videos before and I would argue this odd time signature adventure is one of your most important creations so far. The preparation for this video was precise, everything was lined up so well, your explanation of the different techniques was solid and the outcome sounded like... Synth Seeker! Thank you very much for helping others and for giving me motivation.

    Such a good and useful tutorial. So much insight, so much information and ideas. I really dig your stuff. Simply excellent. As somebody else wrote somewhere: You are the Bob Ross of electronic music tutorials. Thank you very much for your efforts.
    Odd meters in Ableton are a breeze compaired to the Elektron sequencers. I love my Elektron stuff for their potent sequencers but in term of odd meters they are somehow... well... they suck.

    Loved the Odd Time foray -Thanx!😎 However, as a drummer/percussionist for over 50yrs. -a couple things could've been made a bit clearer👀...
    1) 'Synchopation' with regards to rhythm is when 2 or more DIFFERENT rhythms are being played SIMULTANEOUSLY within the same overall rhythm. These are referred to as: 'Polyrhythms'...
    In Ur demonstration there was ONLY ONE rhythm: an arpeggiation w/ accents + a kick metronome -so, not really 'Syncopation'...
    2) 'Odd Time' (as far as us drummers are concerned anyway) is generally referred to as: 'Compound Time'; i.e., 5/4 = 2+3|over|4 or 9/8 = 4+5|over|8 -or however U wanna break it up...
    3) ALSO, it's GOOD to note the fact that switching meter within a song generally accompanys EITHER a DIFFERENT section of a song, i.e., Bridge or Chorus, Jam Section -Or whatever, etc. where the music tempo (as well as the timber, accents & instruments) may ALSO change to further accentuate the change in meter...
    Other than those few things -Excellent Presentation! Thanx 4 the inspiration SynthSeeker!😇

    Wow, just popped up in the suggested videos. Subbed! Love all this time signature stuff, really makes things interesting to the ear.
    I'll load up the midi files up into the Akai Force which is stuck in 4/4 and doesn't allow you to change time signature. Obviously can do it with some fudging about but its a faff.
    Dug out the RT Spectralis this weekend as well which has a step sequencer which dose allow you to set any time signature.

    • @synthseeker
      @synthseeker  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don’t know much about akai gear but you can fake odd time sigs by forcing shorter loop points maybe? Glad to meet you!

    • @gonzinigonz
      @gonzinigonz 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@synthseeker Yeah, you can set a clip to loop any length you want but the grid is locked in 4/4 so visually it can be a bit of mess and confusing! MPC's will allow different time signatures to be set.
      Force is cool though with all its foibles, i think its was mainly created by programmers that aren't musician's thinking they know what people want.
      Its very closely aligned with Ableton as clip based. You can import / export sessions between them.
      I'm binge watching you channel it seems :)
      I don't know why i didn't come across it sooner but it all finds its time!
