  • Preparing for our forthcoming house move, I recently gifted my beloved Hammond XE2 organ to the Rytmus Music School in Örebro, Sweden (where our eldest granddaughter, Emelie, has just completed three gloriously happy years studying) in the hope that the XE2 will provide an opportunity for new students to learn various organ techniques : Classical, Theatre, and especially JAZZ which is very popular here in Sweden.
    In this clip (the last one until my computer comes back out of storage some time in September) I give a short introduction to drawbars, and some basic ideas for registrations which I hope will help future Rytmus students get started on their exciting adventure into learning to play the organ.
    To them, I wish all success for a future of - "Happy Music!!" - Peter :)

      Your kind message has really "made my day" - I love taking away all the "mystery" surrounding music and everything to do with music. I am so pleased my video was helpful to you. Thank you very much for watching, and I wish you every enjoyment with your C3, which is a great instrument. Best wishes from us in Sweden - Peter :)

    Very well done! Ive always wondered what the individual bars represented. So easy even a sax/guitar guy such as myself could understand.

    That was a brilliant tutorial and like many people I have learned more in a few minutes than I have in years about draw bar settings.

    Thanks so much!!! NO ONE has explained drawbars as well as you have! I LOVE British rock music from the 60s & 70s that incorporate a B3/C3 and now, retired, I would like to find a vintage B3 and learn a little bit-WITH a Leslie 122 or similar 2 speaker, 2 speed spinner. Thanks again!

      Hi Mike, Thanks for you friendly message, and good wishes. We haven't exactly moved in to our new home yet... still got a few weeks to stay in hotel whilst the sellers (who are very nice people!) move out, and move in on Sept 14th, just before I go over to the UK for the organ festival at Seacroft, Hemsby.
      I will indeed miss my old Hammond, Mike, but felt very happy to give it a nice new home, by donating it to the Rytmus music school in Örebro. At least it will be played regularly and hopefully inspire a few youngsters to want to learn organ... and enjoy a bit of Jazz.
      All best wishes to you and yours, Mike - Peter :)

      Hi, Thanks for watching this one and for your friendly message. All is well here in "sunny?" Sweden, thanks, although I don't come over for the festivals any more... 'cos they won't pay me enough money to cover my travel expenses and leave just a bit over as any sort of reward for coming over, playing my music and maybe doing a "teach-in" to pass on my musical knowledge, as I always have done in the past.
      A pity, 'cos I used to enjoy the teaching (lecture) side of things, as well as meeting my mates. Ah, well.... their loss, eh? Although I feel sorry for my "fans" at the festivals, many of whom have written to me to tell me that they miss me.
      Hope all is well with you too. Best wishes from us in Sweden - Pete :)

    Nice to hear from you again Peter and what a great little tutorial on Drawbars. I agree with Mike I'm sure you'll miss the Hammond, when I sold my XE200 I didn't think I would miss it, but some days I do as it was fun to play having the extra voices to blend in with the Drawbars, of course I replaced it with an SK2 which sounds great but lacks the feel of a big lump of wood, if you know what I mean, anyway to ease things somewhat I've just bought an Orla GT3000 which I'm very pleased with, there's just something special about playing a proper Organ with Pedals :)
    Hope the move goes well and I look forward to hearing you again very soon.
    Cheers for now, Keith

    hi Mr. Peter I like your drawbar combinations and settings. I just want to ask what is the settings of your leslie effect when the ON button is on? because it is not osciliated and or not so wavy sound, it very clear to hear every single notes... I like that, can I know that settings please.. thanks.

    • @HaywardMusic
      @HaywardMusic  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello Jerome,
      I gave my Hammond organ away to a music school when we moved house recently, and so sadly cannot check the answer. From memory, when the Leslie switch was ON - then the leslie (effect) was on SLOW, but as it was not a very deep effect it is possible that the camera didn't actually register much difference between 'slow' and 'stop' -
      which would explain why the sound was not (so) wavy. Thank you very much for listening, and welcome back again soon.
      Friendly greetings from us in Sweden - Peter :)

      oh I see. I like your own drawbar registration for full church organ, I am so impressed. by the way, can I know what is the best drawbar registration for the lower manual to achieve the tone of full church organ? you thought the perfect and beautiful drawbar registration for the upper manual for church tone.
      I want to ask only if you don't mind. and thank you for response. have a wonderful day Mr. Peter!

    Hello Peter,
    I have a Hammond drawbar module set up on my Ringway and although it sounds very good, I haven't used it much as I
    have mostly been playing my EL 70. That said, I do intend to get on with it soon and your video is very informative.
    The only thing I wonder about is : Do you keep the same drawbar settings when you are using the organ's percussion effect ?

    • @HaywardMusic
      @HaywardMusic  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      hi Brian, you are right that the settings alter slightly to take account of percussion. I normally tend to push in the corresponding drawbar footage, to let the percussive footage sing out over the rest of the registration. Sorry can't demo this, as I have donated my Hammond to a local music school. I may look out for another one when we move into our new home, then I can continue showing more drawbar settings. Thanks for watching. Best wishes, Peter :)

      Hi Joseph, Thanks for your friendly message and kind wishes. Unfortunately during the past week, I had to spend a couple of nights in hospital under "observation" following some severe chest pains (which they thought might be heart related). I had to cancel a planned visit to the UK for a concert and Keyboard Festival.
      I am currently awaiting more tests (and a scan) to determine the cause of the pains. Will be back "online" again soon, and recording lots more new numbers. Best wishes, Peter :)

    Do any other organs have drawbars? I think they’re the reason for that classic Hammond sound.

    • @HaywardMusic
      @HaywardMusic  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, several different organ makes have 'drawbars' - but due to copyright, they aren't allowed to call them the same name... they will often say 'Flute Sliders', 'flute bars' or similar (although they mostly have the same effect). The best actual Drawbars can be found on old, original Hammond Tonewheel models... real original quality sound.

    • @heywilbur
      @heywilbur 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      9 drawbars means 9 oscillators/sounds, which is why Hammonds sound so "fat". Each is a simple sine wave, but they add the natural harmonics. Brilliant design... and from the 30s 😎...

    • @HaywardMusic
      @HaywardMusic  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is an XE2 model - In other words two Hammond XE1 keyboards joined together into a single unit. Not as "posh" as the XE200 model in its nice wooden cabinet, but works OK for me.
      When we moved house within Sweden, I presented it as a gift to the Rytmus Musik School, in Örebro, where my eldest granddaughter had spent three happy years learning music.

    What brand and model of organ are you playing in the video?

    • @HaywardMusic
      @HaywardMusic  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hammond XE2 - which is basically two single keyboard Hammond EX1's joined together on a very basic wooden stand.
      It looked 'orrible but at least it had drawbars. The Hammond XE200 was the "posh" version of the same instrument, in a (tasteful?) black polyester cabinet, but it cost a couple of grand extra and I simply couldn't afford it.... nor justify the extra cost for something which basically had the same spec, but looked shiny.
      Thanks for dropping by. Cheers - Peter :)

      It is a Hammond X-200. I loved this organ, but when we moved house we had no room for it, so I donated it to a music school in the hope that it would encourage more kids to learn to play organ/keyboard. I recorded these drawbar tips just before they came to collect it. Best wishes - Peter :)

I miss it, but at least (hopefully) it is being played and enjoyed.

    He's a nice man and he does a brilliant job explaining the drawbars. But that organ doesn't sound as posh as one of the classic Hammonds. This thing sounds like it belongs in a baseball stadium. However, I am sure the school appreciated the gift and an instrument - like this - will always find use. It won't be as high maintenance either with the digital mechanism. Haha

    • @HaywardMusic
      @HaywardMusic  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, This Hammond was a solid state "modern" model. The sound of the classic tonewheel models is REAL class. The X-200 was basically two single keyboard Hammonds MIDI-ed up together... wires everywhere inside (LOL) but it did the job, and allows the school to teach basic drawbar settings, and organ technique.
      Thanks for watching this one... (and you are right about "low maintenance" - plug it in, and it goes)
      Welcome back anytime. Cheers - Peter :)
