I saw this movie several times since my youth and I can see it again.
It is old, it is B&W, it is complete Japanese but is incredibly moving and you feel lots of emotions.
For those who did not see it, do not hesitate. You will not loose your time.

Watching this again. Everytime I put this film on, I can't believe I've missed so much in this movie, yet am only half an hour in.
Honestly, this is the best film I have ever seen. And I'm proud that I have watched this at least a dozen times.

According to Kurosawa, during a conversation between Hayao Miyazaki, he said he sent all the actors home with their costumes they actually use in the movie and had them wear every day, so they wear naturally to make them look realistic.
I think it set the trend for the movies to follow. You can see it in Fistful of Dollar(remake of Yojimbo) and the sequels how dirty the clothes the actors wear, and compare it to the western movies before.

    小学校1年生の時、
    学校の校舎に白幕を張り、
    夏休みの夜に映写したのを見たのが始めてだ。
    今で言うpublic viewing だ。
    菊千代が雨の中でのたうち回って死んでいくシーンが

Toshiro Mifune was one of the best actors I have ever seen. His range of emotions was spectacular and his role as "Sanjuro" in Yojimbo and Sanjuro was amazing. So good he inspired "the Man with no name" played by Eastwood.
Japanese cinema at it's best. You have got to see Throne of Blood as well, fantastic adaptation of MacBeth.

Yeah, i was real young when i saw this movie too, like 7, i didn't understand it then. I saw it again like 15 years ago when i was 20. It's my all time favorite movie...perfect story, characters, plot...everything. I can never get my friends or cousins to watch this movie with me. They turn it off after 5 minutes. If it isn't color or have english dubbing, they won't watch. They are ignorant. Patience is all it takes. The movie will eventually keep you glued to your sofa.

I saw this movie when I was about 16 y.o. back when I had no clue about Japanese history. It completely blew me away and I become totally hooked up on everything from Japan ever since. I am 32 now and I remain a huge enthusiast about Japanese motion pictures, anime, manga and video games. I want to buy this masterpiece. Does anyone know if it's aviable on Blue Ray?

  • @BoopSnoot

refreshing thing about this classic IMO is that the emphasis is on ACTING not CGI so you actually care about and can relate to the characters regardless of language or cultural differences, and on that note the stunts are not blue-screen wonders either but skilled horse riding and real falls.

This movie is absolutely amazing. It was the first movie to develop plot devices like hiring a group of experts for a dangerous mission (very common today - oceans 11, italian job, etc.) It's either one of the best Japanese films of all time, or simply one the best films of all time. Back in the day, by the way, movie trailers were horrible by today's standards. Now days the trailer is almost a production all on its own.

Although the film seems to be a bit behind in technological advantages for its time (particularly sound quality), it makes up for it with an intriguing story and interesting characters. The movie is about 3 1/2 hours long, and yet I was left wanting more, a credit to the writing and directing of the movie legend Akira Kurosawa. Excellent acting, score, and sets/props add to this hands-down Japanese classic.

i was just wondering, which one is best of the three movies; Seven Samurai, Yojimbo and Sanjoro.
I wanted to know because I haven't seen any of them. The latter two are coming to blu ray in a few weeks. So, should I just wait for Seven Samurai, which has no release date, before seeing the other two or just watch these two and then wait for Seven Samurai?

SIMPLY THE BEST for me, everything about it is class, also you get to understand the social class system of Japan of the time, I think it is based around the 17th or 16th century when there was much infighting between the many rulers, and there were many Ronin (Masterless Samuri) as their leaders were overthrown or killed, and so some formed bandits groups like here on this film !!!

But I am the only person that I know who does. none of my friends, relatives or work colleagues do. Living in South Australia, I feel alone in this aspect but a little bit more special or enlightened than my counterparts. After watching the Seven Samurai many years ago awokened me to the great quality of Japans cinema. Toshiro Mifunes acting was amazing. His character very magnetic and likable.

There have been many remakes but none had duplicated Kikuchiyo character to the level as good as the original. Without the effort by Toshiro Mifune, this movie could be just half as good.
The battle ending scene of "Dances with wolves" is quite similar to the battle ending scene of 7 samurai, where the bandits leader on the horse surrounded by villagers before gets killed.
I'm not saying which one copied from wich. ^_^
