I find its a lot easier to use a blending stump instead of your finger. It blends much smoother. Also, if you put a scrap piece of paper to rest you hand on over the drawing, you don't get smear marks on the drawing. You can also use different sized blending stumps, and use residual charcoal as a drawing tool.

What the stomps do basically is they move the graphite/charcoal around and also push it into the fiber of the paper. That way, if you want to erase something, especially when using charcoal where you use a kneaded eraser a lot, for highlights and such, you can't get as much charcoal to be removed as you could if you simply used your finger. Stomps are just a pain, to be honest.

The thing I don't like about kneaded erasers is that they have no firmness, if I mold a fine point it just wobbles

I noticed you said you put down a paper, and although that works quite well, I've found that using an old smooth glove that doesn't contact the paper too much works well (so not like a snow glove, like wool or whatever) if you cut out the thumb, fore and middle fingers on the glove. That way your pinkie and Ring, the two most common to touch the paper, as well as the side of your hand, is usually smudgefree. Drawings that I'm sure would have smeared everywhere are basically pure and it makes you look more professional too haha.

Thank you very much for posting this Awesome and educational video. To think that you were able to bring out the beautifully detailed images of the human eye with a few well placed strokes of a pencil! There are a number of people like yourself that are truly gifted and must pursue this talent. Than you have those who have nothing better to do than leave their boorish and uneducated comments. Those that have the mental capacity of a crayon!!

Do NOT blow charcoal dust off your paper! Any moisture that might accompany your breath that lands on that paper will create a black spot in your drawing.
Instead, tap the paper from behind and the dust will fall off.

Vine charcoal is for establishing base tones for your piece. it's much easier to work on a grey/black background than a stark white page. Also, it's blowing away when your paper is too smooth. Graphite works best with a medium textured paper that has a nice bite to it.

The thing about the eye though is that it isnt a "round ball". If you look at it from the side you know what I mean. It protrudes at the iris, which is why the eyelid is curved. The eyelid curves around the protrusion of the eye. Hope that makes sense

+Rhonda Hoeft: Best of luck to you! I started drawing in high school with mechanical pencils and lined paper, now I work with Prismacolor and Derwent graphite and charcoal as well as different drawing papers, sketch papers and newsprint. Starting out, I wouldn't worry about the "proper" way to draw, just take what you have and start having fun with it.
It's a lot of fun, but it's full of failures. For every hyper-realistic, gallery-quality piece I make; I fill up at least half a dozen pages of (I.M.O.) garbage doodles. Embrace the "failures" and learn from them, force yourself to really examine them and try to ignore what you hate about them and force yourself to find what you like about it.
My only other piece of advice to you would be is to draw something every day. As a Millennial I find it's easiest to get in touch with my inner child and even though I haven't been interested in it in over 10 years, I draw a Pokemon everyday. It's actually more fun than I thought it would be, and that's the key; make it fun!
P.S. We would love to follow your progress, post a little 30 second (or whatever) video of your finished drawings/doodles (or a time-lapse of you drawing). You can talk about your drawing or just show it off. :-)

It's because I'm trying to draw something realistic and the graphite might be getting in the way.

What can I use to protect my drawing if it's in a sketchbook? I don't want to smudge it...

What kind of sketchpad would you recommend using charcoal ? It scattered easily on the other side of bondpaper its look like a mess

I can't shade as you do. I'm using Derwent as well (tho "Medium" and "Dark", not "Light") on Canson paper and I find charcoal to be a bit scratchy and inconsistent. It's like it "tapers off", like a nib that's ran out off ink. I can shade a whole area eventually but it's a frustrating experience. Any suggestions?

I usually smudge with my finger but I cover my finger with a piece of cloth from an old T-shirt
