People love denying Brandy’s impact and try to downplay by any means, but people fail to realize she was a teenager getting so much notoriety as at a short amount of time. Her own TV show, brand endorsements, and starring alongside her idol Whitney Houston among other Black legends, she has done it all. Put some respect on her name.

It shocks me as well! In school people compared Britney when she first came to Brandy! This lady was it! It’s a shame that her music legacy seemed to get overshadowed when Aliyah passed and Beyoncé began doing solo stufff! Her last big album pushed received a lot of fans cheering. I hate the fact that MTV sort of ignored Brandy at this time! Her career, imho, is similiar to Christina Aguerla and Mya in my book.

The fact they copied Brandies image and used it on Britney. Britney skyrocketed globally too because of it, what helped as well was her whiteness. Not many like to talk about it though. This isn’t the first time the image of a Black Woman was copied and pasted onto a white woman.

It was the whole marriage thing that started people to side eyeing her. And with Monica being so "real" 🙄 and already pitted up against brandy, it was easy for people to switch up on her. The accident was the nail in the coffin. Not to mention because of all this, she stayed out the public eye to try to avoid the criticism. Not putting out music consistently allowed people to hang on to her tragedies.

Timbaland also produced the Say My Name remix. But the sound of TWOTW had that Shakes' peare/Kandi Burruss (So Good, Bills bills bills, Bug A Boo, Hey Ladies...) and they wrote and produced No Scrubs for TLC as well as DarkChild sound (Say My Name) who had just come out of the massive success of Never Say Never

When I was younger.. at the time of Never Say Never release.. I was the girl who would listen to only the tracks she liked on an album.. not the entire thing. When never say never came out.. that all changed.... obviously.. certain songs on Never Say Never are better than others.. but what I'm saying is.. I loved it for more than just it's radio singles.. really enjoyed hearing the entire thing.
There are a lot of songs on Never Say Never that deserve more credit than they get. Not going to get into a whole list.. but I will give you three examples. The title track Never Say Never.. happy and angel in disguise.. they definitely deserve more credit than they get. Like you said Brandy deserves more credit in general. She's the reason I fell in love with music.

I could not agree with your open statement more! She never got the recognition she deserved in the 90s. Always loved her.. but when never say never came out.. I guess that's when you could say I became obsessed! My entire room as a young girl and teenager was covered in posters of her. Not in a creepy way I promise! She was just everything that I wanted to grow up and be... she was so inspirational to me. When Never Say Never first came out.. I went into a mall CD store called the wall.. does anyone remember that store? Eventually the store became FYE. Anyway.. I went in the store and I was telling the sales guy about how much I love Brandy! My stepmother was with me at the time.. I can remember the big Never Say Never Album cover promotional poster hanging above a display of her Never Say Never album. My stepmother could tell I really wanted it.. but she knew I wouldn't speak up and ask if it was for sale.. so she spoke for me. The guy said unfortunately.. we don't sell the album promotional posters that hang above the CD racks. He said those posters are intended for the store to promote an album not available to the public.. I felt a bit disappointed.. but I understood. We started to leave.. the guy called out wait a minute! Listen I will give you this poster.. even though I'm not supposed to. A big smile came on my face and I thanked him over and over again! Pretty sure we offered to pay for it.. but he said no. He said he could tell that I really wanted it and I really loved her.. he said the smile on my face made his day. Thanks again guy from the no longer existent CD store.. you were awesome!

Fun fact i learned recently, John frusciante (guitarist for rhcp) has named her as one of his inspirations for his stuff on i think stadium arcadium? I'm a huge rhcp/ frusciante fan but also loved listening to brandy growing up lol so it was cool to think he was listening to the same stuff thinking it was amazing. He pulls from a lot of different sources. And she really was The It Girl of the 90s
