Why I Bought the 11" iPad Pro 2021

  • Replacing a "real" laptop with an iPad is slowly becoming a reality. Now the iPad Pro shares the same M1 chip as many Mac computers. I really have high expectations of what this means for the future of the iPad Pro and iPadOS.
    I've yet to use the iPad Pro solely as my daily driver - mainly because we need actual pro apps, like Final Cut Pro and Logic Pro.
    This review is made before WWDC 2021, where I'm really looking forward to see what iPadOS 15 will do for the iPad Pro.

    I was a truck driver for a 15 truck company and I was using the iPad Pro 1st and 2nd gen for work because they used an app for logging your on/off duty times. So off duty it was my tv since I had the cell versions. Using google maps for my pick ups/drop offs was 98% accurate to use the semi truck on those street roads and big enough to look at my maps to see where i needed to go, I love the pro versions.

    To me the Ipad is the absolute best choice, I'm a professional violinist and having the ability to put the iPad on a music stand and be able to read any sheet music you could think of, while being able to change pages with a foot pedal is already enough. But I also plug in my Scarlett interface and record with cubasis (if logic is coming this is just too good), do all of my editing with Luma fusion (all I do is music stuff so no need for more fancy video editing software) I also use the procreate app a ton for flyers or thumbnails, watch a ton of TH-cam on it, and play competitively codm lol, it's perfect for me.

    The 11" iPad Pro is not as small as some people think it is...
    The size difference doesn't really matter that much because you can zoom in a lot while drawing on ProCreate anyway.
    It's all a matter of how you look at it...
    If you put an A4 size sheet of paper next to an A3 sized one, most people would choose the A3 one to draw.
    The 12.9" iPad Pro is as big as an A4 sheet of paper, so...

    I’m just happy that last year is when apple really gave the iPad a new life. The iPad now feels like a category if it’s own. We just need the ipad OS to be optimized for 8gb of ram and we can finally run Mac type apps. In very excited for WWDC.

    • @MelkonEsso
      @MelkonEsso  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Exactly. I’m really wondering how Apple will handle the massive jump in ram - will they just straight up release software that only works for the new iPad Pros - or will they do it down the line, when the last 2-3 years of iPad Pro releases have at least 8GBs of ram? So many questions for this WWDC

    • @sloppynyuszi

      Melkon Esso I think it will be app specific, I still run out of layers in Procreate on a 4gb iPad Pro. Bought the 16gb model, reached the layer limit again. Seems like Apple won't let developers use more than 5gb :( they have to fix that.
      Also raster based animation apps like Callipeg and Roughanimator will take great advantage of the RAM. Just finished a commercial that needed 10 seconds of animation, once I added tweening to 4 layers, the iPad struggled. It's a RAM related bottleneck :(

    Your decision to get the M1 iPad Pro 11” reflects mine almost exactly. My first iPad was the third generation. I still use it daily. The reason I’m getting this new iPad is because it’s a giant leap from all previous iterations. I love tech. I own a Surface Pro 2017, a Surface Studio, and the iPhone 12 Mini along with my 3rd gen iPad. I don’t get excited with minor iterative updates so I’m thrilled to get this truly next gen iPad. Oh, and I ordered the Logitech Combo Touch keyboard over the Magic Keyboard because it offers superior protection and has function keys at the top!

    Nice video, Melkon. I've been struggling on whether to get the 11" or the 12.9" inch iPad, but every video I've come across so far points to the 11" inch iPad as "the deal".

    • @MelkonEsso
      @MelkonEsso  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Money is a huge reason, but also because the 12.9 inch is huge if you want to use it as an actual handheld tablet computer.

    • @SyedShoaib
      @SyedShoaib 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I made that choice in 2019 when I got the 11” iPad Pro. The lesson I learnt was - go for the 12.9” version if you are going to use it for the larger part of your computing time, I.e. if it will be your computing mainstay. Also 12.9” if you want to do substantial handwriting or sketching. Now I have both the 12.9” and 11” version. The latter is what I carry around everywhere.
      But if I had to make a choice, I will prioritise the 12.9” over 11” anyway, everyday. It’s not that heavy. And the additional real estate makes a ton of difference in the workflow.

      @IDrawToothpicks 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@captainbottles I’d bring either 11 or 12.9 anywhere. And I don’t bring it too many places. Don’t worry what others think. I’m pretty sure a lot of people have iPads. If they see more people bringing iPads out and not being worried about the size etc. more people won’t notice your tablet. Both are still light 11 more so but the 12 doesn’t bother me I’m using it now. I’ll let you know if I stuck with it in 2 weeks :) so far it looks nice. Also the person commenting above is right it’s great for workflow for artists especially. If you aren’t an artist. Either one is great. The apple rep at the store recommended 11 as a popular one surprisingly even though it’s cheaper! I think it’s because I was getting a pencil in addition to it. He was great in helping me get discounts.

The Magic Keyboard for the 11” is rock solid, and prefer it over the 12.9” version as it doesn’t add nearly as much weight. I have also noticed more websites present their mobile view on the 11” than on the 12.9” but I do use the Reader View whenever it is available.

    • @MelkonEsso

      Thanks! Yeah, my thinking is that if I wanted a 13” screen it’s too comparable to a Macbook Pro 13”. But I would like to try the 12.9” iPad Pro myself to see if that holds true. Also, great tip with the Reader View, I’ll try that.

    nice video. i've ordered mine and i'm very excited to use it. i own a macbook pro too but i dont have high hopes that apple would make it a full-fledged computer for pros because first, it would affect macbook sales and second, apple intended ipads to mean fun and entertainment rather than business, and it's exceptional on those things. ipads can be companion to macs as an extended display and for continuity functions and it's exceptional on being an auxiliary device. if apple decides to import their pro software like final cut and logic pro x, and improve ipad os' file system and multitasking, there's no point of owning a macbook and apple doesnt want that. at the end of the day, they need to please their investors first rather than consumers. ipads needs to be just ipads so they can coexist with macbooks. otherwise, macbooks have no reason to exist. just my two cents :D

      I see where you’re going, but Steve Jobs have been quoted for saying “If you don’t cannibalize yourself, someone else will”. If Apple still holds true to their old values, I could see them actually trying to replace the Macbook with the iPad Pro. It’ll take some years from what we have today, though, and I think that Macbooks will still have their place.

    I’ve always been fascinated by magic since harry potter and the philosopher’s stone. Technology is the closest we can get to magic. Apple have been doing it in a way that seamlessly work like magic, and wanting to experience all of these technological advancements is a reason in itself to want to have these devices.
    The original iPhone amused me, the Macbook Air as well, the iPhone X amused me again, than the 2018 iPad Pro amused me one more time. I haven’t had the means to purchase an iPad yet, but hopefully someday soon.
    I just wish these things would be more accessible.

    Please Apple, fix the GD lint/dust collection on the screen. I cannot find a modern tablet that doesn't have this problem. I'd be happy to deal with a reduction in picture quality if it meant one less spec of dust. Might as well be snowing on my liquid retina display. No idea what caused this but every tablet, "pro" or not, I've bought for the last 3 years has had this problem, it's not just the iPad pro.

    So you bought the 11” M1 iPad Pro, but you never mentioned why you bought it in this size, over the 12.9”. I’m guessing because it’s fits in your pocket? Like you I have the first ever iPad in immaculate condition. I had the 4th Gen Retina display. Then the 9.7” iPad Pro. So now I’m going to upgrade out of necessity to M1 iPad Pro, but which size? That’s been my dilemma since they were announced. The 11” is almost the same size as my 9.7” however so slightly larger, and the bezel is much smaller as well to keep this form factor almost identical. I find it laughable how reviewers comment on the extra weight of the 12.9” is over the 11” model. This is a technological wonder and its packed with so much power than my first computer, which in 86 was called a portable computer at 40lbs! I suppose it’s a matter of perspective. I like the idea of a thunderbolt hub, but I want the one that attaches to the iPad Pro at the connection, because I wish to remain mobile as well as portable. So you’re please with your choice of an 11” vs the 12.9”?

    • @MelkonEsso
      @MelkonEsso  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, it’s because I can carry it everywhere. And for handheld purposes I love that I can pop out that little tablet and actually use it as a tablet, where I think the 12.9” would mostly stay on the magic keyboard.
