  • This video shows me making the 30th Santa Christmas ornament this year. I made these to send out to family and friends. Enjoy!
Did you count the ornaments in the thumbnail image? You're right, there are only 28 pictured. The thumbnail image was taken prior to recording this video and one of the ornaments has already been sent off. Thanks for checking though.

I like it but a too much weaving around, makes me dizzy. Keep up the good work ! 👍

I’ve carved plaster and clay before. I’m going to be doing it in wood in the near future. Your video has been very helpful. Thank you!

Thank you. I originally was only planning on putting this one video up so my relatives could check it out. After seeing the response, I will most likely put some more out.

Hi Steve, great job on the video your lighting and audio was perfect. No washout on the video which seems to be an issue with alot of these guys that shoot carvings and I could hear everything you said, so great production in my opinion. Looking forward to more from you. Thanks for sharing your talant.

Thank you for the feedback. I have had a busy summer but will be making time to finish up a video for a series that I started previously. Then I hope to put some new videos out. Thanks again!

For the most part, I keep them touched up with a power stop. Ii also use a shaped strop for the internal profiles of my gouges.

Thanks Blake. I loved the Santa carving that you had in your videos and thought I would make some to send out to my family with Christmas cards this year.

Hi Steve. Great Video. I to have been experimenting with other products for sealing my carvings to get away from the odor and safety issues around boiled linseed oil. I have used the Naturoil cutting board oil which I can buy for $12 cdn and I like it and it gives good results. Since Naturoil is mineral oil I have also looked at other products. I can purchase Paderno cutting board oil which very similar to Naturoil and it is only $9 cdn. Both of these products go on easy and dry overnight to be ready for painting. If you are in a hurry you can apply them and then wait 15 minutes and the wipe off any excess oil and move right into painting if you have to.
The other thing I have tried is the standard mineral oil you can get in pharmacies. It is available in two variations. There is regular mineral oil which is very viscous and takes a few days to dry even after any excess has been whipped off. Once dried the carving is ready to be painted. It is only $5 cdn. There is also a light version of mineral oil which I haven’t had a chance to try because my pharmacy is out of it right now. It sells for $9 cdn for 250ml and I would guess that it will behave much like the cutting board oils.

Thanks for the comment Mike. Since recording that video I have found another source for the oil that is much cheaper. I first purchased it through Amazon and they price is currently $38us. I found it at Jamestown Distributors for just over $9us per bottle with free shipping.

The camera I used is mounted on a headband. It probably isn't an ideal camera for this but it is what I have so I used it.

I, too, have found another source since the video. I found them at Jamestown Distributors online for just over $9 and free shipping for the 250ml (8oz) bottles. Thanks for the comment.
