    Andrew Mcneil did some testing with this antenna.
    He had a better signal response (at 2.1 GHz) by modding the antenna. Probably changing the coax would help.

Pointless claiming i need to test this pointed at the tower if its not marketed as directional or requires an app to point it the right way. if it was so directional as you claim it wouldnt work at all pointed the opposite way but it does. you also fail to notice it was oriented 360 degrees lol

      Maybe you should go watch a video on how dbi works. The lower the dbi the antenna is like a bubble pulling signal from all directions. The higher the dbi it starts turning into a flat direction reaching farther out. So yes you might get a low signal pointing away from the closest tower but if you point it at the closest signal it will get way better.

    I bought one of these antennas from Amazon and I'm returning it. It did nothing for me. Turns out it's not a true MIMO antenna, although it's clear that it is made to deceive you into thinking it is.
    A true MIMO antenna should have two antennas isolated from each other. But using my multimeter, I measured continuity between both connectors. So both connectors go into one antenna - kind of pointless. Also, in a MIMO antenna, both antennas should be at 90 degrees to each other. I held this up to a bright light and only saw the shape of an antenna straight up the middle, not the large + shape I would expect if there were two antennas at a right angle to each other.
    It's trash.

  • @gavinnorthants

    I would stick the aerial on a upstairs window, at the top of the window. This way you have as much hight as possible hopefully clearing surrounding building and getting the best signal. As well go on your mobile operator's website and find the direction of your nearest transmitter. You can figure this out, as the transmitter will have a ring of excellent signal surrounding it. Once you know the direction of the transmitter, stick your aerial on a window facing that direction.
    Now with your 2-meter cable, you can position the WiFi box so you can get the best WiFi signal in your house. Normally on a table free of obstructions, so the WiFi signal can propagate well.

    The 35 dBi claim is BS. So is the 88 dBi claim of the LF-ANT4G01. However the LF-ANT4G01 I actually found works very well despite tried several other external antennas (though not the exact you have there) so you might want to check out that one too. I got a massive increase of the important RSRP from -93 dBm to -81 dBm (fluctuates to -78). A massive 12 dBm gain(!!).
    I had the issue that the local tower goes into power save during the night and so only B20 band (800 MHz) has great strength but strength of B1 or B3 (2100 and 1800 Mhz bands) when upped in the morning wasn't quite enough that router switched back to them even though they're much faster. The 20 Mbps up/down during the night is fine but it's a tad on the low side during the day and so I could just as well had kept my ADSL. I could then restrict my router to use the 1800 MHz band (no 2100 restriction for some odd reason although it can use that band) but that'll result in extremely bad upload during the night at ~1,5 Mbps - not ideal when you have surveillance cameras that needs to be able to upload relatively fast. With this switching to B20 at night and back to B1 or B3 in the morning seems to work flawlessly - no more morning routine of rebooting the router - Yay! While it was not my main motivation to try the antenna it even upped my download to around 180 Mbps when best (100 worst) while before it was 50-80 and upload seems maxed out at 50 - nice!
    As others say the position of the antenna is important - also with the LF-ANT4G01. Actually it's best when it's not pointing directly towards the tower - so play a little with it. The current spot I've placed antenna in I've also the router in so it's not just position. The LF-ANT4G01 actually is better than the build in antennas by a good margin - although of course not the exaggerated 88 dBi claim.
    The construction of the LF-ANT4G01 is also very different from the one you got there (you can see pictures of it by searching). The one you got I believe is just two dipoles. Probably great for high outdoor placement but indoor performance is nothing to talk about - you might as well just stick a thin piece of wire (of right length) in the external antenna connectors then.

    • @Telencephelon
      @Telencephelon 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      With the same antenna I lost 15dbM from - 97dbm RSRP to -113dbm. Did you put it in direct line of sight?

    • @HifiCentret
      @HifiCentret 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Telencephelon I don't think it's direct line of sight but it's quite sensitive to position.
      I still use LF-ANT4G01. It's placed behind a non metalised window. It's important that if it's behind a window that it is not a modern metalised (low energy) window.
      It your windows are such then consider placing it in the attic or even outdoors with a plastic bucket or similar over it so that it doesn't receive any rain or direct sunlight (sunlight probably makes the cheap plastic brittle in no time).

    "It is not supposed to be directional", that is incorrect, that antenna type is very directional, hence the high dB gain it gives. So if it is not pointing directly at the cell tower being used, you can get worse speeds than with the omnidirectional antenna inside your AP.

      This antenna is NOT highly directional, and the 35 dBi claim is pure BS. It's more like 3.5 dB. If you look at the specs you will see that this is a multiband antenna with a wide horizontal beamwidth. The speed improvements come from the dual antennas that can be fed into your MIMO compatible modem/router. Forget signal strength and bars. It's about the signal quality that MIMO signal processing inside your MIMO capable LTE modem can provide.

    • @alanrossreviews
      @alanrossreviews  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      no i didnt, i was looking for the signal strength rather than download speeds. I know you will say they are linked but they are really not the same. You can have fast downloads with a weak signal, the signal strength is more about how resilient the connection is. True i could have easily have added that to the review, in hindsight i would have but really it wasnt what i was concerned about.

  • @wanjevi
    @wanjevi 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    To further correct you ... you are in a dead zone area where the signal is low so even when you put that anntena device the signal strength is initially low so it will not increase.
    You are in a bunker where the signals is weak putting an antenna within the "bunker walls" will not change the reception. So mount the antenna externally try to get the best clear path between antenna and the cell tower ( and it shouldn't be just any window) use the open signal apps to get the direction and its going to increase the bars. The only down side is the cable is short. There for buy an additional longer cable. But rule of thumb don't use it where you already have a weak signal. This is an extended antenna unit not a signal booster . A signall booster will mainly have an additionally power unit for amplifying the signals... but this is just and extended antenna in a weather shield box...any antenna can do the trick if its place in the open and with the best direction towards the tower as possible

    I guessd so..... A simple way is to unscrew or buy an 4g antenna (meant for desk routers or modem) from you local internet shop cost about a dollar or so attach it to a normal satellite cable with some modifications ie fittings and install it at the highest elevation you can get.....or buy the 4g antenna cable from amazon and connect it to the above mentioned antenna and hoist it as high as you can.. If you want to boost the power even more take a used soda/pepsi can open it in a semi circle and face it towards a cell tower.... Place the antenna between the can and the transmission tower.They might be several cell towers near you but to know which one your receiving transmission from download an app called open signal (they is a video in youtube). On it and it show you which direction the net is from sometimes its just obstacles between you and the tower ps make sure when you are using wifi and not cell data to locate the exact tower

Line of sight is king. So if you can get your antenna on the roof and it can see a tower(s) you are in luck. You can also survey the local towers to see whether you have line of sight or not

After pointing the antenna towards the tower and rebooting the hotspot device (netgear LB1120), signal is the same as without the antenna, but my download and upload speeds have effectively doubled and latency is half what it was without the antenna. Very interesting. It's supposed to be unidirectional, but it appears to be directional from my experience. Certainly a cheapo but I was able to get it to increase my bandwidth significantly without any noticeable increase in signal bars. Of note, if you don't have both leads connected it doesn't work at all.

    Your "test" is unreliable, you ONLY used the basic b**ch display on your modem, didn't show us the web ui, didn't show us a before and after speed test. Don't believe this guy's useless test guys, it worked for me. However I did the recommended use and put it next to a window (less obstructions). Low and behold I boosted my signal (2 bars of 4G to 4). People actually make homemade versions of this - the tech is pretty basic. You could also just have a faulty unit, in which case saying categorically "this is not a night and day improvement if you are going to get an improvement" is redundant as you didn't factor that in.

    • @alanrossreviews
      @alanrossreviews  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      where do you think the web ui gets its reading from? the same place the unit display gets its reading from, they are identical. The video clearly shows before the booster before and after. This is not sold as a window antenna, thats just one way you can use it. You are then of course tied to using your router by the window or use an extension cable which will drop the signal. You also get a signal boost by placing your actual router/mifi by the window and out of the way of obstructions so again the point of the booster is lost. When i sue it attatched to the window the signal is still the same with or without the booster. The tech is indeed simple, not sure what your point is.
