John Landis on ONE MILLION YEARS BC

  • This is the way it wasn't! A longtime favorite with Creationists, this loose remake of the 1940 cavemen-vs.dinosaurs epic made a star of unknown Raquel Welch despite the fact she has almost no dialog. Its success, which led to several further prehistoric adventures from Hammer, was eclipsed by the phenomenal reaction to a single iconic publicity still of the star in her fur bikini, which became a wildly popular poster and cultural touchstone. Ray Harryhausen, who supplied the mostly stop-motion monsters, made only four more films before retiring. The US release was cut by 9 minutes, since restored.

Even though this movie seems to have been made One Million Years B.C.G.I., I still love it. Why? Hammer, Harryhausen, Raquel Welch, and a beautiful musical score by Mario Nascimbene!

I'd say When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth(1969) is the finest of the genre.
Such an emotive score and visual. So rich in subtext, you don't need dialogue.

I was quite a young lad when I saw this in the theater, all I remember about it is learning to appreciate the shape of a woman's lower back. Thanks Raquel!

I saw Ray Harryhausen's Raquel Welch model, and lots of other models and drawings from his movies, in a Harryhausen exhibition in London. Great stuff!

Part of the appeal of these reviews is just to see who Landis will claim to be!

If David Mamet rewrote the dialogue, it would win the Oscar for Best Film.

I always thought this flick was pretty cool! Something one needs to understand about it and consider when watching it - it ain't supposed to be a classroom history lesson! . .. it's an escapist sci-fi fantasy/adventure, . . with a serious element of dramatic allegory ( with the thing about the different human factions and how they compare and interact ). You gotta pretty much take flicks like this one as sort of cinematic comic books. If you want a prehistoric-themed movie that's more realistic and historically accurate then try Quest For Fire or Clan Of The Cave Bear instead.

Ian Findly FINALLY! Someone who understands if every movie followed every scientific facts ever made than it would be boring! I mean I like realistic films but once in a while you just need to say “fuck it” and judge the movie by how compelling the characters are, how intriguing the story is, and how good the effects are. Not how accurate is to actual 1 million bc.

The animals used in 2001 were actually tapirs, not warthogs. Tapirs have a more exotic, primal look with their odd, flexible snouts. :)

One of the late great Ray Harryhausen's pictures he created. I rank this with Mighty Joe Young and The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms.

2:27 ...Even as a young boy watching this in the movie theater, I questioned a dino walking in front of a "snow capped" mountain. Still one of my fave Sci-Fi films of all times.

The poster they had put up in my neighborhood movie theater clearly showed Raquel's pubic hair at her bikini line. The people who created that poster must have had it "touched up" because in the movie itself at no time do we see that. Did anyone else see that "touched up poster"????

Obviously there's a lot of talk about Ray Harryhausen right now. One thing that always stays with me is how he said he made sure the crab they used in MYSTERIOUS ISLAND was killed in a very humane way and the inside of it became someone's dinner! It was pretty decent of him to make sure of that.

Yes, like in the original One Million B.C. and The Lost World where young crocs fought iguanas (or something like that) and actually seriously injured the latter.

Tumak and Akita? It's Luana! Bad fan-boy, Mr Landis :) Akita means Help, Danger, Look, Attention. The same dialogue was used in the sequel When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth and, yes, the original 1940 version used some of it, too. Search for my Guide to Cavespeak on youtube.
