      A plain reading of the text has image and likeness identical in meaning to the same as physical form and similarity in appearance. This different concept of God seems to be little more than an attempt to divorce the Biblical portrayal of God from its origins as "heavenly 1humans"
      On the other hand, when he talks about conforming to the image of Jesus, it is of a earthly human which becomes s divine or heavenly human like the angels of heaven.

    Dogs display "oughtness," shame, loyalty and are probably just as good at betraying instinct as some humans. I mean, Im not saying they are made in the image of God, or anything. But, when I looked into my dog's eyes, I see a soul.

      Of all the animals on earth, no other creature desires to please, to serve, enjoy the company of humans, etc etc than the dog. A number of mammals tolerate humans but none are eager to interact/play or do work to please humans. A good example of that type of mammal is the horse. Horses never are motivated to serve or please humans. Dogs have a higher or more complex level of "personality" to interact with humans, to create a bond that is beneficial to dog and man. That aspect or ability is created, not some chain of random events over billions of years. The dog was created for us, for mankind and it makes me angry when people abuse them.

      I disagree. Dogs were not willing....they were domesticated by humans. The same applies to any animals we domesticated. The relationship between animals and humans is a type that is mentioned in Job. GOD says who TAMES the wildness of man? Just as we domesticate these animals unlocking their potentials, and creating a strong relationship we too need a HIGHER BEING to tame us and unlock our potentials. Horses who are domesticated will run themselves to death for a human. The ox willingly takes the yoke and with purpose.

      Adam and all animals are described as “living souls” in genesis… their genesis is the same, God’s life energy (spirit, ruakh) is “blown” unto them so, in some regards, animals and adam share a nature. However, animals are distinct from man in the fact that they don’t get a mind, consciousness, they don’t differentiate between good and evil, they just “are”. Conversely in the new testament Jesus is described as a quickening spirit instead of a living soul and, in some sense, this implies that man “evolves” in its nature to be “animal like” to be “God like” (in the sense of becoming a spirit like God, not in the sense of having God’s power). If we look at the new testament morals Jesus calls us to deny our animal instincts and, instead, come to use logic and reason instead of simply our instincts… and, in some sense, become free of our animalistic nature…
      In other words our body becomes transformed (just as jesus body) to go beyond its natural limitations and become more “spiritual” in the literal sense and not simply a metaphorical one… so, there is intelligence in a dog, there is a soul but there is no “spirit” there is no comunion with God.
      I got into this question searching for the difference of soul and spirit in the bible (specially the old testament) and soul is usually referred to describe a living thing but spirit usually is used to describe attributes of “conciousness”. However, this terms sometimes are not clear in their distinction and ive found that the same is true in other languages. Soul, spirit, mind, live are usually integrally related but, for some reason there are still 2 different words: soul and spirit and they seem to have a difference that, even is unclear, is relevant…
      God bless… i really like this topic and would love any feedback any of you might have…

    Maybe I am missing something here, but Michael's interpretation of "us" in Genesis 1:26 seems to be referring to God and the angelic host. But this is problematic since the "us" in Genesis 1:26 made man. As far as I know, the angelic host had nothing to do with the creation of man, or anything for that matter. In the opening of John it says, "All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made" (John 1:3 ESV). So I don't think it is unreasonable to interpret the "us" in this case to refer to the trinity. While there are other cases of plurality in the old testament, I think each case needs to be investigated based on context, and not merely just their syntax. If there is something I am missing in this, let me know.

    So My concern at 30:38 is that if we are made to image God, as to behave in some way in relation or respect to God, this implies that there is the possibility of not doing this. Does someone living in sin, not have the image? If that is the case, and the image is what makes their life valuable, (Genesis 9:5) Can I kill them, with no repercussions, apart from those of the land?
    2 Cor 18, also seems to imply that we have lost a part of the image, and that the image is something we grow into, from one degree to another.

    • @WhatYourPastorDidntTellYou
      @WhatYourPastorDidntTellYou 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Really good questions. Without putting a ton of thought into it, it seems like imaging God doesn’t inherently give us value, or it doesn’t give us our only value. For example, most would consider it morally wrong to kill a dog purely for the sake of enjoyment. A dog still has value even if it isn’t imaging God. In the same way, it seems like we still have value but just not as much?

    • @jondoe8014
      @jondoe8014 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      If you are a representative of a president and this position grants you inherit value then even if you are not properly representing the president it will not negate the inherit value the position.
      So the image would mean by nature of your being you are in a representative position by virtue of being made. If you are not representing properly it does not mean you don't have the position by merit of existence it just means you aren't fulfilling the position properly.
      You can have a position and not be experienced in the position and over time grow to understand how to fill the position better, but that does not remove the position.

      Erm... Gen 9:6 (as he also quotes) refutes your premise; the "fall" did not take away our being "in the image of God"; otherwise it would not be the basis for the "evil" of murder, as God tells Noah, since no one at that point had it any more under such an assumption. God says, well after the fall, that we still have the image, so I'm going to go with that...

    Animals can't conceive of God nor communicate with him, nor do they exhibit an inborn sense of morality. Their intelligence is far from man, as good as the intelligence of some animals may be. This is a trait unique to humans. Babies don't have the communication skills or free will yet but they are designed to do it eventually. Even if this is impaired for life, they can't do it because of impairment of or damage to the design, not due to the design itself as human. As for angels, they are created beings and are never said to be made in the image of God, so how can man be made in the image of God and a creature like angels, which are never said to be in the image of God? The design of humans is unique, even if undeveloped, or if impaired, the later of which is a result of corruption due to sin. Made in the image of God is more than a function; it is a link to the Creator with the mind, language, moral sense, and spirit but is imperfect or broken due to man's fallen nature. In the redemption through Christ, man's image is redeemed as he is more conformed to the image of Christ and thus back to the image of God as man was created to be.

    • @WhatYourPastorDidntTellYou

      Why would we think angels are made in God’s image?
      Because there are good reasons to think that “us” in Genesis 1:27 refers to the heavenly host which Heiser refers to.
      You can’t say that there’s potential for development like that solves the problem. If there is potential for development, it is by definition not in the image of God yet. You can’t have your cake and eat it, too.
      For animals, you have a big burden of proof to show that animals don’t have a moral compass or ability to talk to God.
      You also have the burden of proof in saying that there weren’t humans that were mentally impaired before sin came into the world as Genesis refers to.

      Do you consider this in the original 'understanding' of the Hebrew text ?

      Is the word or 'expression used' here a metaphor ?
      Let us remember that Mark and John say Jesus "always" .....used parables and "figures of speech" -( even at the last supper Jesus says HE was speaking 'figuratively ' to His disciples, but soon...)

      If you are as "literalist" then these 'figurative' images will b e difficult to digest. As a Baptist, I welcome any discussion using the Bible as the 'checkerboard' ....

    I think there is a problem with this presentation! While trying to figure out the nature/essence of the image/likeness of God, rather than starting with Jesus as the perfect image bearer (Hebrews 1.3), and with analyzing the things that make Him unique in that sense, the author starts with a presupposition (that has no Biblical justification) that there is some part/aspect in/about us that makes us both humans and connected to God (that we share with God). Since so, according to the author, this particular part should make us radically different from the rest of creation. Consequently, to know what the image is all about, one needs to figure out this part. That is why the author “disassembles” humans into various parts/aspects (intelligence, freedom of will, morality, status, etc.) and tries to see whether any of them makes us radically different from the animals…
    Since I prefer to start with Jesus, I see no room for this perspective. There is no particular part/aspect in Jesus’s human nature that was unique about radiating the glory of God (leaving the others “unemployed”). The image is not in such things as ability to think, talk, act freely, have a position/status, etc. The image is in what Jesus speaks, freely does, etc. Yes, to be that image Jesus had to use the faculties that in some form or another, to some degree or another are present in animals, but no animal can substitute/be like Jesus, can it? But we as human beings both can and should - with God’s help, of course (Jesus was empowered by the Holy Spirit!). So, rather than disassembling humanity into various parts/aspects, I would rather look at the whole and say that absolutely everything about us is designed to reflect the glory of God. After all, God didn’t say: let us create humans with a part/aspect (among many others) that will be in our image, did He?

Unfortunately i already purchased his books (haven't read them yet) and it seems i shall be returning them. Intelligent he is, enlightened in divinity i personally don't see it. Michael, to help you out if there is a choice of mother or child you pick the mother. This is the covenant of marriage the family heirarchy and the doctrine. To also help you out the scripture forbids taking of innocent life. Letting someone perish is different from murder. You left your bible imo and ventured elsewhere. God bless

      This gentleman is instructing Michael Heiser! He is critical but as a critic he makes no sense. I went to check him out and he has a video of his wife plowing snow!! My advise to this religious moron is to stop talking to himself and try to figure what is being taught! What doctrine does “itsallminor” (??) refer to? I guess expecting him to put forth a covert thought when he is talking about “DOCTRINE”. I think he should return the books because his chance of comprehending a man smart enough to write a book will be teaching. I am glad I will never get to meet this NIMROD!

      The church did a lot of bad things to people because they believed the image of God was a quality that could be lost. Mostly Calvinist reformed types and Catholics, but still. You only feel at peace killing ungodly savages when you don't see them as created in the image of the Almighty God. Doctrine's of devils are many.
