    I would mention that most of the pastel pencil artists that I like use these sharpened to a long point with a razor blade and sand paper (point at least 2 inches long). I think this greatly enhances the detail you can get with the pastel pencil, as well as using the broad side, as this is such a soft medium, that the broad side of a pastel pencil sharpened to a long point effortlessly puts down pigment with great bliss. Also, as with vine charcoal and other soft mediums, many people get used to rotating the pencil as they use it at an angle most of the time to help perpetually maintain the point. This technique also almost requires that the pencil be sharpened to a long point, and sanded at least once to get the initial shape desired.

      Hi Matt, thanks so much for your comment! I completely forgot to mention this in the video so thank you for leaving a comment! Also, great point about rotating the pencil to retain it's sharp point for longer 😊

    It would've been so very useful to see a swatching of the pencils along with their names or numbers, since the swatches on various online stores' sites are useless in terms of working out what the colours actually look like. I am trying to buy these open stock, and my hope is that someone on TH-cam has swatched them out for me to see the colours and buy the suitable ones.

    They are actually great for details too, just keep sharpening them with a blade without to much pressure to avoid the tip breaking.

    I love this Amy, it’s so well shot and informative! I love to watch review videos regardless of if I already have the product or not😂 I could also recommend the Faber castell Pitt pastels as they are slightly harder pastel so easier to stay sharp(for the fine details you mentioned), but I still think stabilos are more reasonably priced

    They seem to be the favourite due to quality and price. I have them but have yet to use them! Will see if you have given some lessons. You should have mentioned they are also partial aquarellable, they can be used with water but the colour doesn't move as if it was a watercolour.

    Pastels always put me off a little because they are so messy but pastel pencils seem like the best of the bunch. I bought a really cheap set to try out and think that was probably a bad idea because it was probably a bit unfair to generalise based on those. These pencils look gorgeous - love all those vibrant colours

    My question would be, how does each company determine the grade of lightfastness? Is there an international unit to which all companies refer?

    • @AmyLouiseArt
      @AmyLouiseArt  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There are a couple of different scales companies follow to measure the light fastness of each pigment. The most common are the ASTM and blue wool scale, but some companies also follow the grey scale 😊

    Thanks for doing this video. 1. How does it compare with stabilo all pencils? 2. How does it compare with charcoal pencils like generals?

    • @AmyLouiseArt
      @AmyLouiseArt  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Ema, I’ve never tried any other Stabilo products, only pastels so I don’t know. Pastels are similar to charcoal pencils in terms of their texture - very soft, chalky feel to them but they do have a lot of noticeable differences as well 😊👍🏻

  • @gabgab7325
    @gabgab7325 ปีที่แล้ว

    I love drawing with charcoal pencils, but want to venture into the color spectrum. Would you say these are similar to charcoal pencils, in terms of drawing and shading?

    • @AmyLouiseArt
      @AmyLouiseArt  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would say pastel pencils are very similar in their feel and texture to charcoal pencils. They are a very soft medium, and the more layers you add the easier they are to blend, build up shadows, shading, depth, etc 🙂 Just make sure you are using a good quality brand like Stabilo and also good quality paper that has tooth to it so the pastels have something to grab on to.

    Are they scratchy like charcoal?

    • @AmyLouiseArt
      @AmyLouiseArt  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Agnes! They can be a little scratchy if they get too blunt, so I always try my best to make sure I keep them as sharp as possible. Pastel pencils are a bit of a nightmare to sharpen as they are very fragile so just be careful with your sharpening methods 😀

  • @chaunsywhite9093
    @chaunsywhite9093 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have a question as in what is recommended for best paper for them? I want to eventually get pastelmat because I already hear good things about it , but right now I have Strathmore pastel paper .

    • @AmyLouiseArt
      @AmyLouiseArt  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Ceasar! 😊 I think as long as you use a paper that says it is designed for pastels you should be absolutely fine. There are lots of great brands that you can use including strathmore for your pastels - just check the description of the paper and make sure it says something like 'suitable for pastel' or 'suitable for mixed media' and it includes pastels in the list of mixed media options. 😊 In my opinion I think the most important thing in terms of paper for pastels is it's texture - as pastel is so soft you want paper with a lot of texture to hold those pastel layers. I'd recommend a minimum thickness of around 80lb - 100lb too if you are working with a lot of layers. I hope this helps!
