Airline Pilot Attempts Working The Ramp | Throwing Bags + More!

  • As an airline pilot, I don't get to see what's going on below the wing when we park at the gate. It's about time an airline pilot tried working the ramp! These crews have a lot to do during short turns to get airplanes out on time. I wanted to find out what it takes, so I shadowed some of our crews in Chicago O'Hare. Long story short, this isn't an easy job and I want to give a huge shoutout to our agents all across the country who work through extreme weather to help our planes depart. You guys are awesome!
Founded 30 years ago by a commercial airline pilot who created the original rollaboard, Travelpro makes crew luggage for airlines around the world. Taking what they learned from flight crews, they also focus on crafting the most durable and stylish bags for everyday travel, too. Due to the pace at which thousands of bags are handled and loaded onto airplanes all around the airport, wear and tear is unavoidable. During the design process, bags go through more than 15 types of durability tests to ensure things like handle strength, zipper reliability, and even a sub-zero cold-drop test pushing structural integrity to the limits. Long story short, these bags are tough.

Awesome video! I became a ramp agent just 3 weeks ago after being bored out my brains doing sales/service jobs for the past 10 years at a desk. So far it’s the best decision I’ve ever made. Working outdoors with cool people in all weathers (like -15c at Oslo this week) is incredible, it’s honest work and rewarding. My friends make tons of money but are miserable…I get to spend all day around aircraft, I know which one id rather do…cheers!

In 1997 I got my first aviation job as a ramp dispatcher job I communicated to the crews flight information and radioed the pilots the gate assignment. I managed to preform all but the pushback driver. I loaded and unloaded bags..lost my badge and then found it while putting bags on the carousel at baggage claim. Preformed as a brakeman on aircraft relocation. Marshalling flights. Running the loader, openning the nose on a 747.. cool job. Now doing office work as a cargo Agent processing manifest and customs reporting. Thanks for the sharing the what we call below the wing flight operations. Happy subscriber 😀.

I work for United Ground Express(Subsidy of United Airlines). I can tell you this is physically demanding and can get you into shape if you let it.
Many of the GSE (Ground Service Equipment) is electric while only 4 thing we have are gas. Portable GPU (Ground power unit) Portable PC (Preconditioned air) and Forced APU start (This is as loud as a normal APU on a plane). I love it, and it's a great job for people looking to get into the aviation industry. Airlines will advance people that work for them, over hire outside.
The tugs tbh are fun to drive, but are very sensitive and will tip of your not being aware of your speed.
Potable water we don't always fill, we may get 1 or 2 planes a week that want more potable water or need to be flushed with new blue water (Blue juice). Blue water is what helps break down the bacteria and waste that goes in the brown tank.
Where I'm at, we hate the CRJ200s and the ERJ-145s. They break down so often and cause us problems. They result in canceled flights and upset passengers a long with a lot of rerouting or transfers.
Many pilots have absolutely no clue what being on the ground is like, which causes miscommunication and other problems including inpatient pilots. This then gets put on us which causes us more problems.
Do not work and expect to get paid a lot, I get 13.50/hr and work about 30 hours a week. Schedules are bid based and you have 6 months for probation. Depending on the airline, you will be flown out for classes and OJT (On the Job Training) which could be a month or 2. I'm doing base training (Training at my airport). If your up to joining the industry join it, but do not expect it to be easy, especially when a passenger yells at you. Some airlines cross utilizes their employees, so they are trained on ground Ticket counter and Gate. If you hate physical labor ground crew is not your area.
As of typing this I was in the bag room sorting bags.

Small cargo compartment lots of challenges. Not to mention there are short turn arounds , cargo +bags and a possibility of being a man short in your crew, faulty equipment, heavy bags , weather are all challenges a ramp agent faces but overcomes to not catch a delay and get the flight out on time. Teamwork is a must working all together with the pilots, bridge and ticketing agents.

You nailed this, Swayne. What a creative idea, jumping in as ground crew and showing us the challenges involved in this integral part of the airline industry. You truly are a professional and this understanding can only make you more well rounded. Thank you for a really cool video.

As an envoy ramper I love seeing this because we put a lot of hard work and dedication behind our counters, at our gates and below our wing!

Way to go Swayne! When I get to the airlines I'm going to make sure I put in some hours on the line. They are what make flights happen!

You knew in 1 second who the ramp workers were...very cool Swayne went to the ramp and did that. Every airline employed should experience all jobs. From customer service to riding in the jump seat. That would make them all better at understanding what we h team member does.

It takes a village. From people who work in cargo getting your mail ready for a specific flight. It goes to maintenance to make sure equipment works safely. It means the gate agents who are working to help you possibly get onto another flight if there are problems with your current one. It means the ground crew getting the plane ready to go. It means the flight attendants making sure the customers needs are met and knowing how to take care of situations when they arrive. It means the pilots to make sure you get to your destination safely.
So many moving parts. We (as an airline employee) are grateful for our passengers as if it wasn't for you, we wouldn't have a job.

Man, that's awesome you are mixing it up in Aviation. Trying different trades. Just to keep your "chops" up. I worked in cargo for summer one time. And got the opportunity to "marshall" an cargo plane outbound. It was cool. Thank you posting this.

For me its always interesting to see how other airlines/airports work. since im on the ramp im paying a lot more attention to that and its amazing how different ground handling can be from airport to airport.

Worked on the ramp for US Airways/American for 8 years. It's for sure hard work and why I opted for flight training instead. Can't wait to be above the wing for the first time

I never thought I’d see the day when you would be working out on the ramp. I have to say you come up with some amazing videos. I myself worked the ramp for 6 1/2 years here at DFW before transferring to another department. Your videos are such high quality and personally I think American should use you to make some quality videos. You’re right about the ramp. It can be tough working out in various weather scenarios. Also a lot of rampers, to include myself, who get hurt and have to transfer out to another department. We rampers are sometimes the unsung hero’s of the operation. Thank you for making this video. You are an amazing videographer along with Sam. You two are so amazing. I;d like you do a video about aircraft maintenance.

I was a ramp agent for United Airlines…definitely not an easy job, but rewarding as heck. Who doesn’t like getting paid to work out?

i've been a ramp agent for 3 different airlines.. over the years....most recently my home town (Delta) however due to covid they pulled out of my town and closed down... But you were absolutely right it is a very big exciting job but if you love you job like i did...then... all in a days work...... i will mention... a previous ramp job i had was scary but incredible once you are fully trained, and that's pushing back jumbo jets.... incredible!!!😁👍
