  • Madoka Magic is one of the most positively regarded anime that I slept on in my youth. After a very enjoyable binge, today I yap about the series as it went on and once again shed some spotlight on one of Studio Shaft's iconic shows. Thanks for watching, your support is greatly appreciated!

    In each timeline, Madoka's wish was to save someone. Homura's wish was to meet Madoka all over again and become strong enough to protect her. She did meet Madoka many times.

      Except the very first timeline we see where Homura first met Madoka and she was already a magical girl. That time she wished for a cat to be saved. That’s why in the opening, you see Madoka Kaname in the water holding a small black cat. Most people overlook it. It’s not outright stated in the show, but it’s in the OP which is the kinda subtle storytelling I love about Madoka 😊

      "strong enough" is a bit of a misleading translation. In Japanese she doesn't say that. this is the Japanese 彼女に守られる私じゃなくて、彼女を守る私になりたい which just means "instead of her protecting me, I want to protect her" nothing about being strong enough. Subtle difference but I see a lotta people latch onto the wording of "strong enough" when it's just not in the Japanese.

      People seem to completely forget that “normal” magical girl shows also get pretty damn dark. That’s why, when watching Madoka for the first time (I think I was about Madoka’s age at that time, too) I legit didn’t notice anything wrong with it until the end of episode 6. Mami dying wasn’t even that big of a deal to me! I already knew that magical girls could die doing their job from watching Sailor Moon! But when their souls were revealed to be literally trapped in their gems.. that’s when I finally stopped and went “Wait.. what? That’s not supposed to happen… that’s so horrible O_o”
      (Also, the irony is that now it’s actually the only thing I *do* completely agree with Kyubey on! It’s like.. that would obviously be much safer and more effective. *And* you basically get free immortality with your contract?! Sign me the hell up! I even came up with a wish that would provide the perfect safety net for everything else! This deal legit sounds so goddamn beneficial :P)

    Homura doesn’t have infinite arsenal, she has unlimited space/time storage in her shield and time freezing power. That’s it.
    All the guns and bombs she stole or made herself during those attempted timelines, and she can’t even turn back time - that power is tied to madoka’s demise, not something she can do at-will, which is prob why she never rewound time earlier than the day of meeting Madoka.

      What’s even crazier about the unlimited storage space for Homura’s guns is that once she resets a timeline, those weapons are gone with it. Which means she has to restock and resupply all her weapons and ammunition over and over again JUST to fight Walpurgisnacht only to restart again. Girl has got a mental fortitude I can’t even begin to wrap my head around.

But those are HER only real weapons. She can’t create them like Mami can with her ribbons. So in Episode 10, when you see her making the bomb and stealing the weapons from the lockers, those are all apart of those timelines, and she wastes them all in the fight using her own magic. Ever wonder why you see Homura popping up at the exact moment Madoka is in trouble, with Sayaka in Episode 6 or even Mami in Episode 2? That’s her going out at night and stealing or crafting her own weapons off screen from military compounds to get ready to fight other witches & Walpurgisnacht again. Madoka Magica is my favorite anime of all time. And the one thing above all I love about Madoka Magica almost as much as its characters is how ironic it is. A series that is simple yet complex on a deeper level. Premise? Young girls getting their wildest wishes granted only to have life bite them right back. Kyubey being cute? Has no emotion at all for others which only makes it much more sadistic and unpredictable. Homura wishing to save someone? Stuck saving them forever. Mami wishing to live? Lives her life alone until the very end. Sayaka wishing to heal someone for love? Dies of a broken & exhausted heart. And the best part is every question you ask while watching Madoka Magica gets answered. No plotholes, no convoluted variables, no half answers. Everything is explained without it feeling like exposition. Cinematography plays a big part into the series as well. Showing you what’s going on while telling you i.e. kyoko’s backstory, soul gem 100 meters twist, etc. The series doesn’t need big flashy fights or shock value to develop the plot or characters. Just a well written script, likeable cast, and transformation sequences. Fun fact: Sayaka Miki is based off of the original little mermaid story.

    Madoka wish does have her in an eternal "battle" of stopping the birth of witches. But in doing so, it allows the girls' wishes to still be granted, progression of the human race (so history isn't changed by too much aside from what Homura has already done), and now the girls can rest in peace instead of becoming nightmare fuel, living for eternity with their pain and depression, and killing innocents just because they're hurt. Waiting to become extra energy for the universe.
    HOWEVER! I don't know if you caught this at the end of Rebellion, but Homura got rid of the need for Magical Girls by forcing the Incubators to fight the Wraiths

    • @brandonrockins9572
      @brandonrockins9572 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      I think they will delve more into this In Walpurgisnacht Rising as well. In the trailer, we clearly see Homura chatting with what seems to be another magical girl on the phone. So maybe they are contracted by her and she’s like asking them before they accept “are you ready to accept the risks? Can you fight the curses of this world?” And the half moon/telescope she’s sitting under in the trailer is just like the one from the end of Rebellion, so I wonder what the symbolism is there. Idk just spitballing here. I’m not much of a theorist, I just love talking about Madoka

    • @cathygrandstaff1957
      @cathygrandstaff1957 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      Although I do think there will be fallout from Homura shunting all the negative energy into the incubators. The thing is I think the incubators are actually the familiars of a god tier witch, one we never actually see in series, and that their energy gathering is in service to keeping that witch fed. Without the incubators doing that we’re probably going to see what is actually behind the Madokaverse come out of the woodwork.

    Then add the context of other magic girls' back stories like Nagisa (Bebe/Charlot) things get darker.
    Nagisa's mother was sick and abusive. Nagisa wished for cheese cake and wanted to rub in that she could have saved her mother but chose not too. When she got to the hospital, her mother had already been murdered corrupting her gem. Another magic girl was also responsible for the murder.

      “It's really a delicious cheese cake. My dying mother wanted to eat it, but maybe I should have cured her disease instead. However, that surely wasn't appropriate”
      Magia record revealed the intention behind her wish was to get back at her abusive mother, she knew she could’ve saved her, but chose to not do so. Is even implied she ate the cake and it was never meant for her mom.
      Maybe it was only an assumption, but the production note paints her more like a victim who wished something nice for her mom, but immediately regretted it after realizing she could’ve used her wish to saved her instead.
      Did they change her backstory in magia record? Or was that always meant to be the true intent behind her wish?

    • @user-hl4xd4tb5w
      @user-hl4xd4tb5w 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

      @@paperbagboi3185 I honestly had no clue what you were talking about, so I went and checked. If anything, those original notes were probably more of a concept than anything, which they then used to create a fleshed out backstory. Although in some interview I found about Rebellion someone was talking about how the witches' pasts were already created by someone (so the designing part was easier, etc.), so essentially, what I think happened was:
      Someone created the concept of a witch with a connection to cheese, specifically cheese cake, which was then used to create Charlotte, and then later Nagisa in Rebellion, by which point her backstory was more or less established. Then Magia Record did the whole event thing, revealing her backstory to the audience, and finally clearing things up once and for all.

    I have been waching anime since i was a boy in the 1970s and have seen many Magical girl anime and became aware that nearly all of them have a hidden a very dark undertones. Minky Momo, one of the oldest of the genre, at the end of her series was killed by getting hit and killed by a car. Madoka decided to take the hidden darknes and show the truth of magical girls. Between Madoka and Yuna, I was hit hard with MGT, Magical Girl Trauma, so badly I didn't know if i would ever see a magical girl show again. I did hesantly start Gushing thinking it might be a good way to ease back in to the genre again. I nearly dropped it after Azul broke, but there there were some hints that she may not acctualy be broke or Utena could fix her and after getting 2 episodes behind i did go back. I know it's all fiction Madoka laid the darknes out so bare even the slowest person could not misunderstand how bad magical girls have it. It was so shocking that the remake of Higurashi didn't even phase me. Although, I still can't think of Big Dongo Family without breaking out in silent tears. If anyone has an anime that can fix me so i can watch Klannad again, please let me know. I think Homura did the right thing for one reason. In the previous timelines it was established that if Madoka defeated Walpurgisnacht, she would instantly succumb to despair at having no other purpose and become a witch.
    We know that Madoka travels across space and time to every magical girl to take them before they become witches. What happens to Madoka in the transcedental space once she's successfully taken away all magical girls?
    I think she must succumb to despair and take herself before she becomes a witch. Aka contractually unaliving herself.
    She would not be allowed to exist at the end of her godhood. Having the records of Madoka re-enter a world where she can be a happy human is probably the best outcome for her consciousness. Currently all she will ever know is the despair of magical girls and being their reaper.
    In Rebellion, her huge arm was also covered in scars when she was reaching in to save Homura. That's a sign to me that even in her goddess state, she was suffering badly and only Homura could see it. Canonically they have deep love for each other (not romantically) and I think even goddess Madoka couldn't hide her wounds from Homura in the witch maze where reality was distorted and uncovering deeper layers of themselves to each other

      Madoka already unalived herself after turning into a witch. Homura watched her do it in person (on the moon for some reason). This is actually why Madoka herself is incapable of being born when the Law of Cycles is in effect.

      @angeldude101 I wasn't sure if she actually killed herself then or if it was her keeping her own despair at bay, which is so powerful and in an alternate dimension so could also manifest without necessarily being at the level of becoming a witch. She didn't vanish her own soul gem I thought but rather fought the shadows. Not sure but if she didn't take her own soul gem then I doubt it's that

    If the author “sticks to his strengths” in this case, then the upcoming movie will end on a high note, just like the last two stories did, which you seem to’ve missed. Along with the fact that her given name is Kyoko, not Sakura, it’s Kyubey, not Kyubi, and it’s MA-doka. And yes, Madoka’s final wish is the best outcome, because it means all M-Girls get to be at peace when they’re done rather than become eldritch horrors perpetually drowning in their own nightmares. Though there is also potentially what ends up happening in Magia Record, still need to see that play out… And yes, a high note, because everyone’s still alive and/or free from a gruesome fate, and Rebellion obviously wasn’t gonna be the end of it all, it left shit way open for more.

    And everyone might have different opinion
    Homura probably means depression or via any negative emotions. As well as selfishness
    Madoka is straight positivity or selflessness
    Tell me what u think about other characters- cuz idk
    And here’s a lot of things to consider about the wishes
    Everyone’s wishes are SELFISH
    Madoka wished to save everyone. But that drove Homura insane
    Sayaka wished to heal Kyouske so he could play music again. But all that is just for herself to be with him
    Kyoko wished her father could be listened without thoughts. But she just a want it for herself so she can eat
    Homura wished to “save” Madoka. But it’s just all for Madoka. Which I’m sure she cares about others but she can also just kill anyone if that means making Madoka happy. May be selfless only to madoka, but not to everyone else
    I forgot what Mami wished for but even if she wished a wish for someone else, that’s only for herself

    Been back and forth on the Meguca Meduka train since it first came out back in 2011 and when I was peak SHAFT and Urobutcher fanboy; eventually I weened off both SHAFT (sometimes being pure ARTHOUSE can get tiring) and Urobuchi rapidly falling off after Aldnoah Zero's flop. I still blame more on Urobuchi being way too much the face of SUBVERT INTO SUFFERING (Fate/Zero, PsychoPass, Madoka, Kamen Rider Gaim etc...), but I gotta admit, Madoka onwards he had a big turn toward more hopeful endings.
    Amusingly the "even with suffering, there is still nobility to be found in self-sacrifice" is both the Most Heroic idealistic ending that's true to the genre, but also one of the things that future Madoka copies fail to grasp, as well as "deconstructor fans" don't understand that it's...pretty much the main theme of most "standard" Magical Girl shows (shout out to PreCure and Lyrical Nanoha).
    I've come around on Madoka's legacy, tho that could be that I'm a Magia Record apologist, and still hold the same nostalgia from when it first came out back a decade ago, but "finding hope through trauma, tragedy and suffering" winds up being a major key to a LOT of Japanese Hero shows, something I still say best encapsulated in Urobuchi's next big work Kamen Rider Gaim.

    I never really considered it before, but why do grief seeds absorb the "polution" from magical girl gems? Considering that coming to the limit of what they could endure, being what transformed them in the first place, how can the seed that's left behind take even more negative emotions into themselves?
    Did being released from their suffering via death, sort of free up room in their grief seeds to take in more negative emotions? Do the witches secretly long for death, but are unable to act on this of their own accord?
