To my understanding, that basically means that any/all phase information innate to an impulse's response has been removed (don't ask me how or what the exact process entails!!), ergo, increasing the likelihood that utilizing multiple IR's together from different origins will be compatible, and will ultimately 'play nicely' with each other! There's a few companies that'll include MPT formatted files with every pack they release, intended for this particular type of configuration!

    And I have a question: how to distinguish a good amp sim from a bad?

    • @FrightboxRecording
      @FrightboxRecording  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I've found that the amp sim itself is never really the problem, it's usually the IR. If I have an IR loaded and I feel like I wanna reach for an EQ and do something drastic...it's probably not the right one for the job.

    • @jorge0358
      @jorge0358 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think it’s subjective, since some people may like a dynamic and realistic sounding amp, while others may like a more mix ready and consistent sounding amp. Pretty much either Neural Dsp plug-ins or STL Tonality plug-ins for a comparison.

    • @ChadKirk
      @ChadKirk 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Frightbox Recording that’s what I have learned so far from recording/mixing guitar. Post EQ should be used as less as possible, instead use better IR

  • @TheNoiseFloorav
    @TheNoiseFloorav 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    What I do hear is that the impulse response you chose is very midrange forward without too much low end. What I don't hear is an explanation of why this makes this impulse work for you in particular, or why (other than nails on a chalkboard) the other impulses aren't working.
    The impulse response, if chosen during production, should compliment the rhythm section and fill out the middle while being beefy enough in the lows to sound large without masking the bass and kick drum. The tones really all need to be chosen with how they impact everything else being considered. To me, the impulse responses here were merely out of the context that would allow them to be useful, as a different mix with different sonic requirements might have exactly what you need using one of the "wrong" impulse responses.
    Remember, as you said yourself, an impulse response is nothing but a snapshot of a mic on a cab. So if that's the case, and that IR sounds bad to you in that mix, then it'd be like acknowledging that you hadn't nailed the mic placement and cab choice yet for that track and had to keep looking.

    • @FrightboxRecording
      @FrightboxRecording  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For me, 99.9% of the time I'm going for a balanced guitar tone (lows/mids/highs) when I'm producing. It doesn't matter what production or amp I'm working with, I always find that a balanced tone works best.
      Whenever people send me tones that they're having trouble with, it's usually due to the fact that the IR or mic placement is not an overall, well-balanced, tone. I've been doing this for 15 years and that has almost always the issue.
      If you can produce a great sounding track with the other 3 tones I've used in this video, you're definitely more of a man than I am.

    • @TheNoiseFloorav
      @TheNoiseFloorav 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@FrightboxRecording Going for a balanced guitar tone is great. It's a midrange instrument that needs some midrange detail without clouding the bass with lows that are too low, and without clashing with the cymbals with highs that are too high.
      Unless it does need those things. In which case, the definition of "balanced" is called into question. As I define it, a balanced guitar tone fills out the areas it needs to fill out in the mix, while not masking areas of the mix that also need to be represented.
      But what about Korn, who treated the guitars like bass and the bass like a guitar? The low end you didn't like might be just the fit for that kind of sound. And if the mix doesn't have much happening in the high end, then that brighter IR can help fill out the top. If it's shrill, use tape saturation or dynamic eq, which is what one would use in that situation with a mic on a cab anyway because guitars can produce nasty resonances in those ranges. Saturation tames it naturally.
      You do you man. You make the content you wanna make the way you wanna make it, and you make the mixes you wanna make the way you wanna make it. My point isn't to call your art into question. My point is, as an online educator myself, to ask the questions this video raises that weren't answered in the video. This way people can see these questions and this exchange, and maybe get a deeper insight into arrangement and how frequency response is less "Right v Wrong" and more "In context v Out of context".
      And don't make statements like "if you can get something useable out of that tone, then you're a bigger man than I". The first one, that was very bass heavy, I'd have high passed to dovetail with the bass, then mono'd the lows on the guitars so they worked with the bass to make a massive low end. Typically I'd have used bx_shredspread to do this, while using the shred knob to ensure the high was present without being harsh.
      It can be done, and if that's the tone I received then that's the tone the artist intended. Making statements like you made are just passing the buck to someone else's tastes and preferences, based on the project in front of them, without actually addressing the things I called into question. And it's easy to simply say "yeah, but that sucks", because that's only qualified by tastes and preferences and not on a specific issue being raised in the tone itself or why it can't be addressed quickly and easily.
      I too have been doing this a long time.
      There is no good or bad tone, there's only tones in and out of context.

    • @FrightboxRecording
      @FrightboxRecording  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@TheNoiseFloorav I respect your opinion and point of view, but I don't view production in the same way (at least in the genre that I work in). That's why I love this stuff, it's art just as much as it is a science...different strokes for different folks!

    Pure gold. Have been saying this for years now. The sim is important yes, but the IR is more so. It's the end resulting shape of the tone. I have tons of IR's and always keep using the same ones I've gotten used to. Plus once I've found a "signature" tone that I like, I tend to move on and start writing and recording, rather than tweak endlessly. That said I still enjoy playing around with new things. But for serious work I stick to my trusty favorites.
    Great stuff.

    I have definitely struggled in this area. If I was honest, I think all these tones sound cool, but it definitely has more clarity when you cycle back at the end. As a guitar player always wanting it bigger and heavier, I would end up with the recto shrill version of things. I have been learning the value of less is more sometimes.

However it still does have a little of the scratchy fizz behind the palm mutes, which is one thing I've tried to get rid of and the only way I've fully got rid of it was micing a real cab.
