      Marc, coming back to this video, it's interesting to see that Williams used the minor 7th interval leaps quite a bit in this cue! I think it represents tension and angst from the characters.

    Why for any unknown reason this particular track makes me cry, not the goodbye part but the part when ET lifts the bikes, is it something in the notes designed to bring emotions? Every time (and yes here too) my eyes get watery.

    The movie's premise was silly but as I got older, I saw its Biblical references and recognized its spiritual Messianic subtext which the seriously beautiful and victoriously redemptive music by Williams so aptly and brilliantly conveys. Well done Marc. It looks like a ton of work, but your video succeeded in giving us greater appreciation for horns and music composition.

    No... Culdn't handle it!!
    Magnifique job.
    Rarely music is that expressive on films nowadays. It's like watching a Buster Keaton film.
    And YES: Cops would be armed if kids were hanging out with an alien: something that becomes quite illustrative on a children vs adults film like this one. Never understood the change.

    • @Marc_Papeghin
      @Marc_Papeghin  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah what's amazing when watching these 15 minutes with just the isolated score is that you realize you don't even need dialogues and FX to make these scene work, the music just does all the talking :) And I agree about the guns, removing them was just a silly decision !

    Another classical masterpiece by the hands of the great John Williams . E T, the extra terrestrial . What a great nostalgia. The escape /chase theme is so iconic . Blending ionian and lydian mode in one. The last epic scene with E T going home is so emotional and triumphant .
    ( 6 Horns in F , 4 Trumpets in B flat ( one doubles in piccolo trumpet ) , 4 Trombones ( 3 tenors / 1 bass , optional 3rd Tbn dbls bass tbn 2 ) , 1 Tuba usually bass or contrabass ... Epic brass section )

I sort of focused on the music all of a sudden and just thought, "Hm...where have i heard this? It sounds like it's from E.T." and sure enough, when i look at the title it's from E.T. Just goes to show how memorable and timeless this soundtrack was.

    FINALLY! 9:55
    You guys have no idea how long I've been scouring TH-cam, eBay, Spotify, Pandora, iTunes, BitTorrent, and I can't remember where else... for an accurate rendition of the ORIGINAL E.T. soundtrack with the 'Saying Goodbye' portion exactly like how it's arranged in the movie. Since... well, you have no idea, because... honestly, I don't really have any idea, but I have an estimate. And I'll tell ya.
    18 years! That's when I lost an apparently super rare CD of the original movie soundtrack for E.T., unaltered.
    During my search, the only copy of the original soundtrack, a 30 year old vinyl LP on eBay was selling for $300!
    WTF!
    All I wanted was this particular, accurate to the movies version, of 'Saying Goodbye!' YEESH!
    All that's been available for 20 years and uniquely replaced with that undecipherable, unacceptable, completely nostalgia erasing 2002 re-release of the E.T. soundtrack of 'Saying Goodbye'!
    I dunno if you guys have heard it, but it is equivalent to the sound of listening to the erotic daydreams of an infant worm being sucked backwards through a French milking machine!
    UNACCEPTABLE! IT'S JUST HORRIBLY WRONG!
    YOU GUYS, on the other hand, have reproduced it perfectly, and my thanks extends to the bottom of the iron clad singularity in my chest where my heart finally feels like it might grow back!
    You folks don't know how this made my afternoon while I set this to playing while I was cleaning my wreck of an art studio, hoping beyond hope that I would hear the original version of 'Saying Goodbye'.
    Then, right at 9:55, when it happened, I thought I was dreaming for a second (this song pervades my dreams, as well as Close Encounters of the Third Kind at the very end and all the way to the end of the credits) when... I HEARD THIS AND THOUGHT MY ISLANDS OF LANGERHANS WOULD EXPLODE!
    Thank you, my heart is full again.

      9:55. You hear that, brain? I'm in control! NOT YOU! It's 9:55, as in NINE-FIFTY-FIVE or ELEVEN HUNDRED FIVE FIVE!

      Hey Raphael, I'd suggest you try this one ;) www.thomann.de/fr/startone_str25_trompete.htm?glp=1&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIt5Cnov_g1wIV6p3tCh2PTQixEAQYASABEgLMAPD_BwE

    How do you record yourself playing French Horn? I've been trying, but I can't seem to find a good place to put the mic. Also what software do you use for mixing?

      I use two mics to record in stereo, one in front of me and the other behind, both at about 5 feet high.
      The tricky thing with horn is that the sound people hear when you play it is not its direct sound ( like say a trumpet or trombone ) but its reflected sound. So you need to take that into acocunt when you record it, the mics need to capture that "reflection"
      As for the software I use Cubase

    could you actually play the whole first horn part from start to finish without breaks with a double horn?

    • @Marc_Papeghin
      @Marc_Papeghin  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sure ! I actually did when I filmed it ;)

      I thought you did it in chunks. It is brutally high

    Is there a place were you can get/listen to this version of the music without the film?

    Where did you find the recording of the music at 11:11 and on? It's not in the original soundtrack :(

      It's available on the 35th anniversary edition of the soundtrack :) www.lalalandrecords.com/Site/ET.html

    The best 15 minutes in Williams oevre ever. Hands down. Even better than the Battle of Yavin 4 from Star Wars. I can't listen to this without crying tears of joy.
    And to be a french horn player... but I only play the clarinet. ;)
    But you went a bit overboard with adjusting the orchestration. I didn't mind much except in the chase where Williams clearly gives the same motif first to the trombones only and then to the horns and then the trumpets and you played it all through. Not a fan of that.

    • @Marc_Papeghin
      @Marc_Papeghin  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah I didn't mean for this "new orchestration" to make sense, my goal is just to have fun playing those parts ;)
      As for those 15 minutes I totally agree, i'll even say those are some of the most perfect 15 minutes in film history !

      I had the urge to say something similar, but then I thought of Vertigo and abstained from making such bold claims. Anyway thank you for uploading this. It was a great joy watching it.
