Nathan Mathers is Eminem’s half brother. He was taken away by the state when he was ten (8 was just for Em to rhyme with Nate). They had a very strong relationship. Eminem wasn’t able to get custody of him until Nate was like 16. Unlike Em, Nate still hates their mom and always saw his brother more of a parent than her. Eminem has taken custody of his brother, Kim’s other daughter Whitney, and Kim’s twin sister’s daughter Alaina (or Lainey as you’ll hear in some of Ems songs)
Sonically it wasn’t your favorite but we still respect your opinion because you took the time to respect and listen to the track in full and understand it. Respect Cleveland... all respect!!!
Nate (the man singing chorus in the song) is not his brother. Eminem just happens to have a brother also named Nate. And yes he adopted his half brother but it’s not Nate who sings in the song.
in "Arose", he said he didn't have a chance to talk with his mother when he OD, he 's referencing this song because it was released after his supposed OD situation.
Had to watch this reaction again great song Eminem like the movies get a little bit of everything and yes it's true Nate got taken away he had a really rough life I wasn't there or anything you can just tell he not making it up Eminem a real one if something on his mind he'll say it that's why he goat see you in the next one peace
The part where there's an extra chorus on the end is exclusive from the album. Also I don't know what the singer had in mind when writing the lyrics, but it somehow sounds like its voicing Eminems thoughts towards his daughter Hailey.
I rarely leave long comments on reviews like this, but this song really touches me so here I go… I have been a huge fan of Eminem since the Slim Shady LP. I was 19 when it dropped and I didn’t give Em credit at first. I mean he was a white rapper and only Snow and Vanilla Ice were his predecessors lol. But…as I heard each song I realized how flawless his delivery was and he could rap about anything on any beat. When The Marshall Mat LP came out I was a full blown STAN. A LOT of his songs seemed to match the scenarios I was going through with my mom and wife at the time. Eminem’s mom and wife would be the target of a lot of his anger; in my life I had a lot of anger toward both my mom and my wife as well. Later on I was told that my mother hated Eminem because she thought he amplified my vengeful feelings toward her. For the entire duration of Eminem’s career he would put out music that seem to complement my current situation every single album. So it was funny when I actually gave up on Eminem before the release of Marshall Mathers LP two and I never got a chance to hear this album until only a few years ago…a few years before my Mom had suddenly died of cancer… We led a predominately estranged relationship even though we live 2 miles apart. I always would listen to ‘Cleaning Out My Closet’ or ‘Kim’ whenever I was mad for years, until the last year I had with her…we got close again and it was beautiful…but I never felt like it was enough to make up for all the lost time we spent fighting. So one day someone told me again how they felt Eminem was a big influence on my anger towards my mother, and that if he wasn’t a rapper I may not have had so many problems with Mom. I decided to re-listen to all the songs that I identified with from Eminem pertaining to mother son relationships, just to listen to them with the wisdom of loss now with me. And out of nowhere ‘Headlights’ had popped up randomly. I gave it a listen, and couldn’t stop crying. I could feel Eminem’s pain through these lyrics, man! It was so deep. I don’t think anyone really felt the weight of his words like I did that first time listening to it. And it only re-solidified my respect for this man… because damnit! He made another song that I identified with when it came to my mom. It also showed that Eminem was just like me in a lot of ways… he grew up and understood things from an adult perspective. It’s nuts, because if I go back and listen to each of his albums IN ORDER? It’s like going into a time machine and seeing MYSELF and my maturity levels at the time! If Marshal wouldn’t have grown in maturity as I feel I have, I wouldn’t put him on the level I feel he’s on, which is G.O.A.T. Call your mom and tell her you love her, whoever is reading this and felt what I said.
If you watch the video it makes it more emotional. Plus seeing her get the letter he wrote. Great song and needed. Grown up for sure. My mom and I were close and she always wanted grandkids. Had then and she's never been more distant. She's a little fucked up from her childhood and I think I need to let go myself and just love from a far. Great song 👌
“This dude just said fasten my seatbelt I guess were crashing, so if I’m not dreaming, I hope you’ll get this message” . Okay hear me out. In the song ‘when I’m Gone’, he kills shady .. “the sky darkens, my life flashes.. the plane that I was supposed to be in crashes, and burns to to ashes. That’s when I wake up.. alarm clocks ringin, it’s spring and, hailies outside swinging” so basically the end of this song is a call back to those two verses in the when I’m gone song where he basically describes a sad dream.
